Jamaica: Holness to Become Prime Minister for the Third Time

In the election held in Jamaica, the current Prime Minister, Andrew Holness, has won for the third time.

In the election that took place there on Wednesday, Holness's Jamaica Labour Party won 34 seats, and the opposition People's National Party won 29 seats. Following the concession of defeat by opposition leader Mark Golding and his congratulations to the victorious Holness, it is confirmed that he will be sworn in as Prime Minister for the third time.

The voter turnout in the election was 38.8 percent. This is slightly higher than the previous election in 2020.

It is reported that Holness won again due to reasons such as a 43 percent decrease in murders this year during his rule.

India-Singapore Decide to Strengthen Trade Relations

Considering the unstable global geopolitical environment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong have decided to strengthen the India-Singapore trade relationship and strategic partnership.

They also released a roadmap to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who arrived in India on an official visit last Tuesday, met with Prime Minister Modi in Delhi on Wednesday for discussions.

5 agreements were signed in the areas of air transport, skill development, technology for green and digital shipping, space, and a digital data repository for next-generation finance.

Emergency Treatment for Accident Victims Without Advance Payment: Karnataka Government Orders

The Karnataka government has ordered that emergency treatment must be provided immediately to accident victims without receiving any advance payment.

According to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments Act, 2007, an 'accident victim' includes not only those injured in road accidents but also individuals who have suffered burns, sustained severe injuries from falls, taken a drug overdose, or attempted suicide.

When victims of such accidents are brought to or encountered by hospitals, they must be provided with emergency medical care without demanding any advance payment. A fine of ₹1 lakh will be imposed for violating this rule.

As per the Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professional Act, 2016, medical tests, first aid, and other related services for accident victims must be provided free of charge.

Kuki Groups Sign Peace Accord

Two Kuki-Zo tribal groups in Manipur signed a tripartite agreement with the Central and Manipur governments on Thursday, pledging to renounce violence, work towards a peaceful resolution, and maintain the state's territorial integrity.

The two groups, the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People's Front (UPF), have also agreed to relocate their camps from sensitive areas in the state. The KNO comprises 16 groups, while the UPF has 7 groups operating under it. This significant agreement has been signed in a context where Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Manipur next week, paving the way for restoring peace in the state.

Manipur witnessed major riots and continued violence between the Meitei community and the Kuki tribes in 2023. More than 260 people lost their lives, and lakhs of displaced people continue to stay in relief camps.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been engaged in continuous talks with all stakeholders to restore peace in the state. On Monday, representatives of the two Kuki-Zo groups, KNO and UPF, held crucial consultations with officials from the Union Home Ministry. The meeting culminated in the signing of the tripartite agreement between the Kuki-Zo groups and the Central and Manipur governments.

NIRF Rankings

IIT Madras has received five awards in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) list for higher education institutions.

IIT Madras has secured the top position in the engineering category for the 10th consecutive year and in the overall category of educational institutions for the 7th consecutive year.

Including these, IIT Madras has won a total of 5 ranking awards, securing the first position in four categories and the second position in the research institutions category.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education releases the ranking list for educational institutions in the country.

In the 'Innovation' category, IIT Madras, which was in 2nd place last year, has advanced to the first position by adding new Computer Science and Technology courses.

IIT Madras has also secured the top spot in the newly introduced 'Aspirations for Growth' category. The institution launched a 'Sustainability School' in 2023.

In the research institutions category, it has secured the second position, same as last year. The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, which was previously in the first place, has been ranked second as IIT Madras continues to perform exceptionally. Thus, IIT Madras has received 5 ranking awards.

The national overall ranking list of the best higher education institutions has been released. Tamil Nadu has secured the first position with a maximum of 17 higher education institutions in the top 100. Following this, Maharashtra is in second place with 11 institutions, and Uttar Pradesh is in third place with 9 institutions.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education releases the ranking list of the best higher education institutions annually. The 10th edition of the ranking list will be released by 2025.

The rankings are based on various factors including teaching-learning procedures and resources, and research. Institutions are specifically listed under categories such as universities, colleges, engineering institutions, management institutions, medicine, pharmacy, dental, law, architecture, and agriculture.

Engineering: In the engineering college rankings, IIT Madras is in the first place, IIT Delhi is in the second place, and IIT Bombay is in the third place. A total of 14 engineering colleges from Tamil Nadu are featured in the top 100 rankings. Among them, NIT Trichy is in 9th place, and Chennai's Anna University is in 20th place.

Colleges: In the rankings for the best colleges, 33 colleges from Tamil Nadu are in the top 100. Among these are Chennai's Presidency College (15th), Queen Mary's College (62nd), Ethiraj College for Women (64th), Loyola College (71st), and Bishop Heber College (76th).

Poonamallee-Sunguvarchatram Metro Rail

The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday issued an order granting administrative sanction of ₹2,126 crore for the Metro Rail extension project from Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram in Chennai.

The Metro Rail project has been under implementation in Chennai for over 10 years. While the Metro Rail is currently operational on two corridors from Chennai Central to the Airport, approval has been obtained from the Central and State governments for its expansion into four more corridors.

The Tamil Nadu government has already provided administrative sanction of ₹1,964 crore for the Metro Rail project works from Chennai Airport to the new mofussil bus terminus at Kilambakkam.

Now, a government order has been issued granting administrative sanction of ₹2,126 crore for the 27.9 km stretch from Poonamallee, near Chennai, to Sunguvarchatram. The Tamil Nadu and Central governments have already given their approval for the Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram Metro Rail line project. Accordingly, ₹8,779 crore has been planned for the construction of the elevated corridor and other related works.
