Central Govt Permits Minorities From Neighboring Countries Who Arrived by 2024 to Stay Without Documents

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has issued an order allowing minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, such as Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains, who entered India up to 2024 due to religious persecution, to stay in the country without a passport or any other travel documents.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which facilitates granting citizenship to persecuted minorities—including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, and Christians—from the aforementioned countries who sought refuge in India, was implemented last year.

According to this act, citizenship is granted to those who sought asylum in India on or before December 31, 2014.

Meanwhile, questions arose regarding the status of those who arrived in India after 2014.

To address these concerns, the Union Home Ministry has issued the recent order.

According to the order, minorities (Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, and Christians) from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before December 31, 2024, due to experiencing or fearing religious persecution, are exempted from the requirement of possessing a valid passport or any other travel documents.

This order enables them to stay in the country without documents.

This has provided relief to numerous religious minorities who came to India from neighboring countries between 2014 and 2024.
