Iran–USA Peace Talks Failure

The peace talks between Iran and the United States held in Islamabad, Pakistan on April 12, 2026, ended without agreement, increasing the risk of renewed conflict in the Middle East . The negotiations, facilitated by Pakistan under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, involved key U.S. representatives including Vice President J.D. Vance, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff. The failure was mainly due to disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme, long-range missile development, and control over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route. Iran presented a 10-point proposal demanding withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Middle East, removal of economic sanctions, and control over the Strait of Hormuz, while the U.S. insisted Iran abandon nuclear weapons development. Prior to the talks, a two-week ceasefire announced on April 8, 2026, by U.S. President Donald Trump was in place. The conflict had already escalated since February 28, 2026, with attacks involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel, and support from groups like Hezbollah (Lebanon) and Houthi rebels (Yemen). Closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted global crude oil transport, leading to price rises and fuel shortages worldwide. The failure of the talks has heightened fears of renewed war involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

China Renames Places in Arunachal Pradesh

India rejected the move by China to assign new names to several locations in Arunachal Pradesh, reaffirming that the state is an integral part of India. China has consistently claimed Arunachal Pradesh as part of Tibet, and has periodically renamed geographical features such as mountains and hills in the region. The response was issued by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs (India), in New Delhi, stating that the renamed locations remain part of India and that such naming exercises do not alter ground realities. The issue reflects ongoing territorial claims and sensitivities in India–China bilateral relations.

Jaishankar Meets UAE Deputy Prime Minister

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in Abu Dhabi to discuss the prevailing regional situation and its implications. The meeting was part of Jaishankar’s four-day visit (April 9–12, 2026) to Mauritius and the UAE. During the visit, he also participated in the 9th Indian Ocean Region (IOR) Foreign Ministers’ Conference held in Mauritius. The interaction highlights ongoing diplomatic engagement and India–UAE strategic partnership and cooperation.

World Bank Funds for Amaravati Capital Development

World Bank released ₹3,165 crore for the development of Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, with an additional ₹1,396 crore to be released later in the same month. The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have jointly agreed to provide a total loan of ₹14,894 crore for the project, while the Central Government of India has allocated ₹15,000 crore. The loan carries an interest rate of 8–8.5% and is to be repaid over 29 years, with a possible extension of 6 years. Repayment of the World Bank loan is scheduled to begin from June 2031.

Swami Vivekananda Statue Unveiled in USA

The first full-body statue of Swami Vivekananda was unveiled in the United States at Seattle. The statue was inaugurated by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and Indian Consul General Prakash Gupta. The bronze statue, located at Westlake Square in Seattle city centre, was designed by Indian sculptor Naresh Kumar Kumawat and was presented as a gift by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). The site is near key landmarks such as Amazon headquarters (The Spheres), Seattle Convention Center, and Seattle Center Monorail. Swami Vivekananda is noted for his historic speech at the World Parliament of Religions, Chicago (1893), which brought global recognition to Indian spirituality.

Chagos Islands Transfer Plan Halted

The United Kingdom’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius has been put on indefinite hold after the United States withdrew its support. The UK Government stated that legislation required to ratify the agreement could not be passed due to lack of time in Parliament, and it is unlikely to be taken up in the next session starting on May 13, 2026. The agreement is linked to the strategic importance of Diego Garcia, which remains a key military and geopolitical asset. The UK has indicated that the deal will proceed only with US support, and discussions with both the United States and Mauritius are continuing.

Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle, born on September 8, 1933, is a renowned Indian playback singer who has sung over 12,000 film songs in more than 20 languages, including Hindi and Tamil, making her one of the longest-serving singers in world music history . She is the sister of Lata Mangeshkar and began her musical career in 1943 by singing in a Marathi film under the guidance of her father Deenanath Mangeshkar. Electoral Roll Revision: Reduction in Voters

According to data from the Election Commission (EC), the Special Summary Revision (SIR) conducted across 9 States and 3 Union Territories led to a 10.2% reduction in voter count. A total of 66.88 lakh deceased voters were removed, with the highest removals in Uttar Pradesh (25.47 lakh) and West Bengal (24.16 lakh). Additionally, 1.28 crore duplicate voters were deleted, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for 79.5 lakh. Through objections filed under Form 7, a total of 63.16 lakh names were removed, with West Bengal recording the highest at 33.15 lakh. The second phase of SIR covered Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa, and final electoral rolls were published, with Uttar Pradesh releasing the last list on April 10, 2026.

IKS Healthcare Plans $600 Million Acquisition of TruBridge

Inventurus Knowledge Solutions (IKS Healthcare), a healthcare technology company backed by the family of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, is in advanced talks to acquire TruBridge, a Nasdaq-listed US company, for approximately $600 million. If completed, this will be the largest acquisition by the company and will strengthen its presence in healthcare solutions and Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). IKS Healthcare, founded in 2006, was listed in 2024, with its IPO oversubscribed 53 times, and has a market capitalisation of ₹26,417 crore. The company’s shareholding includes 63.7% promoters, 33.9% public, and 2.4% employee trusts. TruBridge operates in revenue cycle management, population data management, medical coding, and electronic health records, with a revenue of $368 million, and the US healthcare outsourcing market is growing at 12%.

) to enable victims of coercive money lending practices to lodge complaints, under the Tamil Nadu Money Lending Entities (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025. The Act, implemented in 2025, aims to regulate money lending activities by ensuring fair interest disclosure, standard loan agreements, and protection of borrower rights. The portal functions as a single-window system for registration, renewal, annual filings, and grievance redressal, and supports a digital monitoring system for lending activities. The law defines coercive actions such as intimidation, harassment, violence, or use of private agencies for recovery, and prescribes punishment of imprisonment up to 5 years or a fine up to ₹5 lakh or both under Section 21.
