100 Organ Donations in 3 Months in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, a record achievement has been made with 100 organ donations in the last three and a half months (2026), benefiting more than 500 recipients, marking a first in medical history. According to Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan, Member Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Organ Transplant Authority, the state continues to rank first in India in organ donation. On September 23, 2023, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu announced that state honors would be given to organ donors, a measure later adopted by other states. In 2024, 268 donors contributed organs, helping around 1,500 patients, while organs from 266 brain-dead individuals were transplanted into 1,476 recipients. In the current year, donations from 100 donors yielded 177 kidneys, 80 livers, 28 hearts, and 29 lungs, with a total of 550 organs collected, an unprecedented figure. Overall, 2,421 donors have contributed 14,146 organs in Tamil Nadu, including 4,270 kidneys, 3,574 corneas, 2,144 livers, 1,097 heart valves, 1,011 hearts, and 1,047 lungs, benefiting thousands of patients.

Drone Surveillance for Elections in Tamil Nadu

The Election Commission of India has planned to use drone cameras to monitor and prevent cash distribution to voters during the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026. It has ordered the closure of TASMAC liquor shops for three days (April 21, 22, and polling day April 23). About 1.5 lakh election officials have applied for postal ballots, while 1.90 lakh voters including 1.20 lakh senior citizens (above 85 years) and 70,000 persons with disabilities are eligible for postal voting, of which 15,000 have voted. For security, 299 paramilitary forces (CAPF) are to be deployed, with 115 units already arrived. A total of 4,023 candidates are contesting, including 3,579 men, 443 women, and one third-gender candidate. The number of polling stations has increased to 75,064, including 5,938 sensitive booths. ₹1,032 crore has been allocated for the elections. Measures include use of EVMs with varying numbers across constituencies and grievance redressal through the cVIGIL app, which recorded 3,791 complaints. Seizures include ₹126 crore cash, ₹75 crore worth drugs, and ₹295 crore gold and silver, while ₹265 crore was returned after verification.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 – Prize Money Increased to ₹82 Crore

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the total prize money for the 10th Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has been increased to ₹82 crore, marking a 10% rise from the ₹74 crore awarded in 2024, when New Zealand won the title. The tournament will be held in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026, with matches across 7 venues and the final in London. A total of 12 teams, including India, will participate, compared to 10 teams in the previous edition. The champion team will receive ₹21.8 crore, the runner-up ₹10 crore, and the semi-finalists ₹6.29 crore each, while each team will earn ₹29 lakh per win. All participating teams are guaranteed a minimum of ₹2.06 crore as prize money.

Rory McIlroy Retains Masters Title

Rory McIlroy won the Masters Tournament held at Augusta National in April 2026, successfully defending his title and becoming the fourth player after Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods to retain the Masters title. He had earlier won the title in 2025, completing a career Grand Slam, and with this victory became a six-time major champion, surpassing Seve Ballesteros. McIlroy finished with a score of 12 under par, while World No.1 Scottie Scheffler secured second place, one shot behind. Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton shared the third position with 10 under par scores.

The Augusta Masters (officially called the Masters Tournament) is a golf tournament. It is held annually at the Augusta National Golf Club and is one of the four major championships in professional golf. The winner is awarded the famous Green Jacket, making it one of the most prestigious events in golf.

Hungary General Election 2026

In Hungary, a Central European country, the 2026 general election ended the 16-year rule of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar, won a landslide victory with 138 seats out of 199 parliamentary seats, securing a full majority to form the government. Péter Magyar is expected to assume office as Prime Minister by May 5, 2026. The election reflects a shift towards a pro-European Union stance. The result has received international attention, with leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi extending congratulations. Viktor Orbán, known for his close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump, has accepted the electoral outcome.

Australia’s First Female Army Chief – Susan Coyle

In Australia, Lieutenant General Susan Coyle (55) has been appointed as the first female Chief of the Australian Army, marking a milestone in its 125-year history. She joined the army in 1987 and is currently serving as the Head of the Joint Capabilities Division. She will take over charge in July 2026 from Lieutenant General Simon Stuart. Women currently constitute 21% of the Australian Defence Force, with a target to increase it to 25% by 2030. In related appointments, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond has been named as the Chief of the Defence Force, succeeding Admiral David Johnston, and Rear Admiral Matthew Buckley has been appointed as the Chief of Navy.

Retail Inflation in India – 3.4% in March 2026

India’s retail inflation rose to 3.4% in March 2026, marking a third consecutive monthly increase, as per data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) under the 2024 base year calculation. Inflation had earlier stood at 2.75% in January and 3.21% in February. Despite the rise, it remains within the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) target of 4%. The increase is mainly attributed to food inflation, which rose to 3.87% in March from 2.13% in January and 3.47% in February. In the energy sector, inflation in electricity and gas increased slightly from 1.52% to 1.65%. Inflation impact was higher in rural areas (3.63%) compared to urban areas (3.11%). Among states, Telangana recorded the highest inflation at 5.83%, while Mizoram had the lowest at 0.66%.

LIC Announces First-Ever 1:1 Bonus Share Issue

The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has approved a 1:1 bonus share issue, marking its first bonus issue since listing in May 2022, when the Government of India divested 3.5% stake raising ₹21,003 crore. The bonus shares will be issued by capitalising ₹6,325 crore from reserves and surplus, and the process is expected to be completed by June 12, 2026. A 1:1 bonus issue means shareholders will receive one additional share for every existing share, and the share price will be adjusted accordingly. Since its listing, LIC has declared five interim dividends. In its latest December quarter results, LIC reported a 17% increase in net profit to ₹12,930 crore.

BharatPe COO Resignation

Shashvat Nakrani, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of BharatPe, has stepped down from his COO role but will continue as a Director on the company’s Board. He will transition to the role of a Strategic Advisor from May 1, 2026, focusing on areas such as fundraising, Initial Public Offering (IPO), mergers and acquisitions, and long-term strategy. With this move, BharatPe will be operated fully under professional management. The other co-founders, Bhavik Koladiya and Ashneer Grover, had exited the company earlier.

New Gecko Species Discovered in Assam – Cyrtodactylus raimonaensis

A new species of bent-toed gecko named Cyrtodactylus raimonaensis has been discovered in the Kachugaon region of Kokrajhar district, Assam, near the Raimona National Park. The discovery has been published in the scientific journal Zootaxa and was carried out through a joint effort by Help Earth, Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), Cotton University, and Assam Don Bosco University. Raimona National Park, declared in June 2021, is located in the Eastern Himalayan foothills and forms part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, highlighting the region’s rich biodiversity.

FoF 2.0 Scheme for Startups – ₹10,000 Crore Initiative

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has launched the Fund of Funds Scheme for Startups (FFS) with a corpus of ₹10,000 crore to enhance venture capital availability and support innovation-driven sectors. The scheme is implemented through the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and focuses on deep-tech startups, early-stage venture funds, technology-driven manufacturing under ‘Make in India’, and sector- and stage-agnostic Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs). The selection of funds will be done through a Venture Capital Investment Committee (VCIC), and monitoring will be carried out by an Empowered Committee (EC). The Union Cabinet approved this second tranche in February 2026, and the scheme will be implemented across the 16th and 17th Finance Commission cycles.

India Monsoon Forecast 2026 – Below Normal Rainfall Expected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the Southwest Monsoon 2026 is likely to be below normal at 92% of the Long Period Average (LPA), marking the first below-normal monsoon since 2023. The four-month monsoon season from June to September has an LPA of 87 cm, and the expected all-India rainfall is around 80.04 cm. The forecast is mainly attributed to the development of El Niño conditions. Most regions in India are expected to receive below-normal rainfall, except parts of the Northeast, Northwest, and South Peninsular regions. Additionally, retail inflation increased to 3.4% in March 2026 from 3.21% in February, as per data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Myntra CEO Appointment

Sharon Pais has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Myntra, replacing Nandita Sinha, and will report to Flipkart Group CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy. Myntra, a fashion e-commerce platform owned by Walmart-owned Flipkart, recorded a net profit of ₹548 crore in FY2025, a significant rise from ₹31 crore in the previous year, while its operating revenue increased by 18% to ₹6,043 crore. The leadership change comes as Flipkart is preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in 2027.

Wipro Semiconductor Investment

Wipro Global Engineering and Electronic Materials, the manufacturing arm of Wipro, has proposed an additional investment of ₹1,397 crore to expand semiconductor manufacturing in Bengaluru. The proposal was approved in the 67th State High-Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC) meeting, chaired by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The state government has approved total investment proposals worth ₹18,430 crore across sectors such as automobile, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, textiles, semiconductors, sugar, and steel, expected to generate 15,032 jobs. Major proposals include JSW Vijayannagar Metallics (₹4,600 crore), Volvo Group India (₹1,500 crore), Wipro (₹1,397 crore), and Aerostructures Manufacturing India (₹1,356 crore). The projects will be implemented across 11 districts, including Bagalkot, Bidar, Belagavi, Ballari, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Dakshina Kannada, Tumakuru, Chamarajanagar, Bengaluru Rural, and Bengaluru Urban.

World Chagas Disease Day – April 14

World Chagas Disease Day is observed every year on April 14 to raise awareness about Chagas Disease, a parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi. The day was first officially recognized in 2020 by the World Health Organization. The disease is mainly transmitted through the bite of infected insects known as “kissing bugs”, and it is prevalent in Latin America, though cases are reported globally due to migration. The objective of this day is to promote early diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control, and to highlight the challenges faced by affected populations.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti - April 14

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti is observed on April 14 to mark the birth anniversary of B. R. Ambedkar, born in 1891, who is known as the Father of the Indian Constitution and served as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee. He held key positions in the Government of India, notably as the First Law Minister of India (1947–1951). He also served as a Member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council (1942–1946), where he handled the Labour portfolio, contributing to labour welfare policies. Dr. Ambedkar was conferred India’s highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna in 1990 (posthumously). Though he did not receive many formal awards during his lifetime, his contributions to social justice, constitutional law, and economic reforms are widely recognized. He played a major role in promoting the rights of Scheduled Castes and marginalized communities and authored important works like Annihilation of Caste. The day is observed across India to promote equality, social justice, and human rights.
