High Voter Turnout in Kerala and Assam

In the recent elections, Kerala recorded a voter turnout of 77.93%, higher than the 74.06% turnout in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, while Assam recorded a turnout of 85.33%, compared to 82.01% previously. In Assam, incidents of violence were reported in Sribhumi district (Patharkandi constituency) and Dibrugarh district (Kowang constituency), leading to injuries to around 30 people and the arrest of 7 individuals. Allegations of bogus voting and damage to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were reported in some polling booths. Prominent personalities who cast their votes in Kerala included Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan, Union Minister Suresh Gopi, State Minister Sivankutty, and State Congress President Sunny Joseph. By-elections recorded voter turnout of 65.68% in Bagalkot and 63.04% in Davanagere (Karnataka), 80.62% in Koridang (Nagaland), and 79.84% in Dharmanagar (Tripura). Elections are scheduled in Tamil Nadu on April 23 and in West Bengal on April 23 and 29, with vote counting on June 4.

Puducherry Assembly Elections 2026: Record Voter Turnout

In the Puducherry Assembly Elections (April 9, 2026), a historic voter turnout of 89.87% was recorded, the highest since the first Assembly election held in 1964 after Puducherry’s merger with India. The elections were conducted across 30 constituencies for about 9.50 lakh voters, with 1,099 polling stations operating from 7 AM to 6 PM. A total of 4,836 government employees were deployed for election duty, and 209 polling booths were identified as sensitive with additional security arrangements. The election process was largely peaceful with minor incidents, and all procedures were video recorded. Prominent personalities including Lieutenant Governor Kailash Nathan, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, and other political leaders cast their votes. The election witnessed a direct contest between the National Democratic Alliance (led by N.R. Congress and N. Rangasamy) and the opposition alliance comprising Congress and DMK, with a total of 294 candidates in the fray, along with participation of the TVK alliance led by Vijay. Previous highest voter turnouts were 85.33% (1974), 85.29% (2006), and 85.57% (2011).

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan’s Official Visit to Sri Lanka

The Vice President of India, C.P. Radhakrishnan, will undertake a two-day official visit to Sri Lanka on April 19 and 20, 2026, marking his first visit to Sri Lanka after assuming office. The visit details were confirmed by the Media Division of the President of Sri Lanka. Preparatory discussions to finalize the itinerary were held at the Sri Lankan Presidential Palace, Colombo, involving President’s Chief of Staff Prabhat Chandrakeerthi and Indian Deputy High Commissioner Satyanjal Pandey, along with officials including Mythri Kulkarni (Advisor, Development Cooperation, Indian High Commission, Colombo), Dr. C. Ram Babu (Political Advisor), and Roshan Gamage (Senior Additional Secretary to the Sri Lankan President). Discussions covered the schedule of the visit, agenda for bilateral talks, and review of projects completed in Colombo with Indian financial assistance as well as future development projects. During the visit, the Vice President is scheduled to meet Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and other key leaders.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s Visit to the United States

During a three-day official visit to the United States, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held meetings in Washington with US Deputy Assistant Secretaries of Defense Michael Duffy and Elbridge Colby, and Deputy Assistant Secretaries of Commerce Geoffrey Kessler and William Kimmit. The discussions focused on India–US security and trade relations and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation. Consultations were also held regarding West Asia tensions involving Iran and the US–Israel conflict. The meeting follows the India–US Defense Policy Group meeting held in New Delhi in the previous month, in which Elbridge Colby had participated and met Vikram Misri. The visit is significant in the context of efforts to improve India–US bilateral relations, which were affected by the imposition of additional US tariffs on Indian imports after Donald Trump assumed office as US President, and developments related to Operation Sindoor involving India and Pakistan.

Russia Declares ‘Memorial’ as Terrorist Organization

The Supreme Court of Russia has declared ‘Memorial’, the country’s oldest human rights organization and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (2022), as a terrorist organization (April 2026). Following the verdict, all activities of the organization have been banned in Russia, and actions such as funding, sharing its content, or associating with it have been made criminal offenses. The court stated that the organization acted against Russia’s sovereignty and cultural values. The organization was originally founded in the 1980s to document political repression during the Soviet Union period and human rights violations under Joseph Stalin’s rule. Earlier, some branches of the organization were banned in 2021, and now the entire movement has been declared a terrorist organization. Additionally, Russian security forces conducted raids at the office of ‘Novaya Gazeta’, an independent newspaper in Russia.

India–Bhutan Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project Agreement

India and Bhutan have signed the Tariff Protocol Agreement for the Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a 1020 MW run-of-the-river power project located on the Punatsangchhu river in Bhutan. The river is formed by the confluence of the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers and flows southwards into the Indian plains of West Bengal, where it serves as a major tributary of the Brahmaputra river.

Asian Boxing Championships 2026

At the Asian Boxing Championships held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia (April 2026), Indian women boxers secured 4 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals, finishing first in the medal tally. In the finals, Meenakshi (48 kg) defeated Nomundari Amgalan (Mongolia) with a 5-0 score to win gold, while Preethi (54 kg) defeated Huang Hsiao-wen (Chinese Taipei), a three-time world champion and Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist, with a 5-0 score. Priya (60 kg) won gold by defeating Won Un-gyong (North Korea) with a 3-0 score, and Arundhati (70 kg) secured gold by defeating Bakyt Seydish (Kazakhstan) with a 4-1 score. In the 57 kg category, Jasmine Lamboria won silver after losing to Panrawi Ruonro (Thailand) with a 0-5 score, and in the 80+ kg category, Alfiya Pathan secured silver after losing to Dina Islambekova (Kazakhstan) with a 0-5 score. Lara Cardoso Sets T20 World Record with 9 Wickets

In an international Women’s T20 cricket match (April 2026), Brazilian fast bowler Lara Cardoso created a new world record by taking 9 wickets for 4 runs in 3 overs, the highest in a single innings across both men’s and women’s T20 cricket. The record was achieved in a match between Brazil and Lesotho, where Brazil scored 202/8 in 20 overs, and Lesotho was bowled out for 13 runs in 6.2 overs, resulting in a 189-run victory for Brazil. During the innings, Lara Cardoso also achieved a hat-trick and took wickets across multiple overs. The previous records were 8/7 by Sonam Yeshey (Bhutan) against Myanmar in 2025 in men’s T20 cricket, and 7/0 by Rohmalia Rohmalia (Indonesia) against Mongolia in 2024 in women’s T20 cricket.

TCS Financial Results 2025–26

India’s leading IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a net profit of ₹13,718 crore in the 4th quarter of FY 2025–26, marking a 12.22% growth compared to ₹12,224 crore in the same quarter of FY 2024–25. For the full FY 2025–26, the company recorded a net profit of ₹49,210 crore with a growth of 1.35%, and total revenue increased by 4.58% to ₹2.67 lakh crore. The operational revenue for the quarter rose by 9.64% to ₹70,698 crore. The company’s total workforce increased to 5,84,519 with the addition of 2,356 employees in the quarter, although there was a net decline of 23,460 employees during the entire financial year. TCS signed new contracts worth approximately $12 billion from key markets including the USA, with major investments in the Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector. Managing Director K. Krithivasan and HR Head Sudeep Kuhnimal announced a salary hike effective from April 1, and the Board of Directors recommended a dividend of ₹31 per share.

IAA Olive Crown Awards 2026: The Hindu Wins Three Awards

At the IAA Olive Crown Awards 2026 held at Taj Lands End, Mumbai, The Hindu received three awards in the Press Corporate category. The newspaper won Gold awards for the campaigns ‘Glacier Melts Felt’ (World Water Day) and ‘Stub The Habit’ (World No Tobacco Day), and a Silver award for ‘The Last Pack’ (World Wildlife Day). These campaigns were created by Ogilvy. The awards are organised by the India Chapter of the International Advertising Association (IAA) and recognise communication efforts focused on sustainability.

Chandrakant Patankar Becomes India’s Oldest Living Test Cricketer

Following the death of C.D. Gopinath in Chennai, Chandrakant Patankar, aged 95 years and 136 days, has become the oldest living Indian Test cricketer and the second-oldest living Test cricketer in the world after Neil Harvey (Australia). Born on November 24, 1930, in Pen, Maharashtra, Patankar played one Test match against New Zealand at Eden Gardens in December 1955, where he scored 13 runs and 1 not out, and as a wicketkeeper-batter, he took three catches and effected one stumping.

India’s Solar Energy Growth 2025–26: Record Capacity Addition

India recorded its highest-ever annual addition of 45 GW solar energy capacity in FY 2025–26, with Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu emerging as major contributing states. The cumulative solar power capacity reached 150.26 GW as on March 31, 2026, increasing significantly from 2.82 GW in 2014. According to IRENA Renewable Energy Statistics 2025, India ranks 3rd globally in renewable energy capacity. The growth is supported by government initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar (launched in 2024) aimed at providing rooftop solar systems to one crore households, with 23.9 lakh households covered as of December 2025, along with schemes like PM-KUSUM, National Solar Mission, Solar Parks, and Ultra-Mega Solar Power Projects. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for solar PV manufacturing has attracted investments of ₹52,900 crore (as of September 2025). India is also a founding member of the International Solar Alliance (headquartered in Gurugram) and launched the One Sun, One World, One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative in 2018 to promote global renewable energy integration.

Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Act, 2026

The Union Government has notified the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Act, 2026, which provides a unified legal framework for recruitment, deputation, promotion, and service conditions of officers in five forces: CRPF, CISF, BSF, ITBP, and SSB. The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) consist of seven armed police organizations functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). These include Assam Rifles (AR), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Security Guard (NSG), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). The Assam Rifles (AR) functions administratively under the MHA but operates under the Ministry of Defence. All these forces are headed by officers of the rank of Director General of Police (DGP).

Project Glasswing: Cybersecurity Initiative by Anthropic

On April 09, 2026, Anthropic launched a cybersecurity initiative named Project Glasswing in collaboration with major companies including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Apple, Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, and JPMorgan Chase. The project uses an AI model called Claude Mythos Preview, designed to autonomously detect software vulnerabilities and conduct penetration testing. Under this initiative, $100 million in funding and usage credits have been committed to support open-source security efforts through the Linux Foundation and the Apache Software Foundation. The AI model has identified major software vulnerabilities, including a 27-year-old flaw in OpenBSD, as well as issues in the Linux kernel and FFmpeg framework. The initiative aims to deploy AI-based cybersecurity tools for defensive purposes and develop global standards for software security.

Controlled Cultivation of Morchella (Morel) Mushrooms in India

Scientists at SKUAST-Kashmir have achieved a breakthrough in the controlled cultivation of Morchella (Morel) mushrooms, which were previously found only in the wild forests of the Himalayas. These mushrooms are an edible fungi genus known for their honeycomb-like cap, high protein content, antioxidants, and medicinal properties. They are regionally known as Gucchi, Kanaguchhi, Kangaech, and Chhatri and are naturally distributed in high-altitude temperate forests of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand in the North-Western Himalaya. They typically grow during the short spring season, and their cultivation was difficult earlier due to a complex life cycle and specific ecological requirements.
