Athletics: ‘SRY’ Test Mandatory
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has made it mandatory for female athletes participating in the World Athletics Championships to undergo the ‘SRY’ gene test. This ‘SRY’ test helps in determining a person’s biological sex at birth. The World Athletics body has banned transgender women (who were born male and transitioned to female after puberty) from participating in international competitions. It is argued that individuals who were born male and later transitioned to female have a natural physical advantage when competing in the women’s category. In this context, the World Athletics body announced last month that it is mandatory for those wishing to participate in the women’s category at the World Championships in Tokyo in September to undergo the ‘SRY’ test. Following this, the Athletics Federation of India has sent the relevant instructions to the state associations. Currently, Parul Chaudhary (3,000m Steeplechase) has qualified for the World Championships, while Annu Rani (Javelin Throw) is in a position to secure her spot based on rankings.

Emergency 108 App
With the launch of the dedicated “Emergency 108” mobile application, ambulance services can now be accessed more quickly across Tamil Nadu. According to the Department of Public Health, the arrival time of ambulances has now been reduced to 11 minutes, down from 13 minutes just a few months ago. The Emergency 108 app was introduced with the aim of further reducing this response time. The app features a map-based information exchange system, which helps in minimizing the waiting time. The department also highlighted the expansion of the two-wheeler ambulance service, stating that every minute is precious for those involved in road accidents or requiring emergency medical care. Now, when someone contacts the 108 emergency help center, they can record a voice message with details such as their name, district, village, street, and house number, and send it via WhatsApp, or directly upload it using the Emergency 108 app. Thanks to this new system, the average ambulance response time, which was 13 minutes, has now been brought down to 11 minutes.
