Justice M.S. Janarathanan Passes Away

® Justice M.S. Janarathanan, retired Madras High Court judge and former Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Backward Classes Commission, passed away. ® Served as HC judge (1988–1998) and headed the BC Commission (2006–2015). ® His recommendations led to reservations for Muslims, Christians, and Arunthathiyars in Tamil Nadu. ® In 2008, recommended 3% quota for Arunthathiyars due to underrepresentation in State services. ® Supported 69% reservation under Tamil Nadu Act 45 of 1994 with a report justifying it amid SC scrutiny (2010). ® In 2012, advised 10.5% internal quota for Vanniyars within the 20% MBC quota; the Supreme Court quashed this in 2022.
