Iron Age starts
first in Tamil Nadu

The TN Government released a report titled, ‘Antiquity of Iron: Recent Radiometric Dates from Tamil Nadu’.
®
The discovery made through radiometric dating of burial urn samples from Sivagalai in Thoothukudi district.
®
The study reveals that the Iron Age in Tamil Nadu may have begun as early as 3,345 BCE.
®
The findings push the introduction of iron in Tamil Nadu back 5,300 years.
®
This suggests that a contemporary Iron Age civilization existed in southern India alongside the Indus Valley Civilization in northern and northwestern India.
®
Prior to these findings, the earliest iron objects in Tamil Nadu dated to around 2,172 BCE from Mayiladumparai in Krishnagiri district.
®
Additional at Adichanallur another site in Thoothukudi district, charcoal samples linked with iron objects dated to 2,517 BCE.
®
Comparison with Other Regions Iron objects in Karnataka (Brahmagiri) and Hyderabad (Gachibowli) dated to around 2,140 BCE and 2,200 BCE, respectively.
®
The Hittite Empire in modern-day Turkey previously believed to be the first civilization to use iron, with evidence dating to 1,380 BCE.
