Tamil Nadu’s Birth Rate in 2024

® The number of live births in Tamil Nadu dropped to 8,42,412 in 2024. ® This marks a significant decline from the previous years, where the number remained above 9 lakh. ® A 6.6% decrease in live births from 9,02,306 in 2023 to 8,42,412 in 2024. ® The birth rate in Tamil Nadu fell to 10.9 in 2024, compared to 11.7 in 2023. ® The decline in birth rates may lead to a shrinking productive workforce and an increasing dependent population.

Enforcement of Fisheries Regulations in Tamil Nadu (2025)

® A task force to review Olive Ridley turtle deaths and recommend stricter fisheries regulations. ® Ban on trawl fishing. ® Use of Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) in fishing nets. ® Restrictions on the horsepower of boat engines. ® Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act (1983) bans mechanised fishing vessels within five nautical miles of specific nesting and breeding areas during the nesting season. ® Authorities are urged to strictly enforce the use of TEDs in fishing nets to reduce turtle mortality.

Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam 2025:

® The Tamil Nadu government has allocated an additional ₹500 crore for constructing new houses under the ‘Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam’ programme for 2024-25. ® Aim: The programme to build 1 lakh houses at a total cost of ₹3,100 crore, with each house having a unit cost of ₹3.10 lakh with in the year of 2030.

Pongal Bird Count (PBC) 2025:

® Coordinated by Tamil Birders Network and Bird Count India. ® Annual bird monitoring programme for Tamil Nadu, initiated in 2015. ® 2025 marks the 10th edition of the Bird Count. ® Aims to assess the distribution and abundance of bird species in the state. ® This year, 332 bird species recorded lower compared to 345 species in the previous year.
