EVMs for Local Body Elections in Tamil Nadu

® Voters in 28 districts in Tamil Nadu will use EVMs to elect ward members, panchayat presidents, and other representatives at the district, union, and village levels. ® Term of Representatives in other 9 districts (Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi) ends in October 2026. ® The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) will implement EVMs for Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) in these districts in phases. ® A pilot for using EVMs in RLBs was conducted in 2019 at Melpuram Panchayat Union.

Renovated Memorial of Tamil Martyrs Unveiled

® Tamil Nadu CM inaugurated the renovated memorial of Tamil martyrs Natarajan and Thalamuthu at Moolakothalam, Chennai. ® Both martyrs sacrificed their lives in the 1939 struggle against Hindi imposition to protect the Tamil language.

Growing Revenue Deficit in Tamil Nadu

® Tamil Nadu’s revenue deficit has been rising since 2013-14. ® The state recorded its last revenue surplus in 2012-13 with an amount of ₹1,760 crore. ® Revenue deficit occurs when revenue expenditure exceeds revenue receipts. ® The highest revenue deficit was in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with a significant fall in receipts and rise in expenditure. ® Estimated revenue deficit in the current year’s Budget is ₹49,279 crore. ® The state’s debt was around ₹4.86 lakh crore at the start of 2021-22. ® The debt will expect to reach ₹8.33 lakh crore by March 2025. ® The borrowings ceiling for the year 2024-25 is set at 3.44% of GSDP.

Tamil Nadu Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (TNCPCR)

® The Madras High Court has cleared the way for the constitution of the Tamil Nadu Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (TNCPCR). ® The State government had prematurely dissolved the commission in February 2022, which was formed in January 2021 for a three-year term. ® The panel is set to function for three years, in accordance with the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005.
