India–Japan Maritime Security Cooperation
India and Japan signed a Maritime Security Cooperation Agreement in New Delhi on August 20, 2026, to strengthen bilateral maritime security cooperation and support a free and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. The agreement was signed by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi following bilateral defence talks. The cooperation includes mutual visits of naval ships, joint exercises, exchange of personnel and experts, use of bilateral ports, and logistical support including maintenance and repair facilities. Both countries also agreed to share assessments of the regional and international security environment and opposed unilateral actions that obstruct freedom and safety of navigation and overflight in the Indo-Pacific region and attempts to change the status quo through coercion.
4th India–Singapore Ministerial Roundtable
The 4th India–Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR) was held in Singapore in August 2026 to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The Indian delegation included External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jithin Prasada. The ISMR was established in 2022. The two countries discussed cooperation in agri-food trade, maritime heritage, digitalisation, skill development, health and medicine, advanced manufacturing and connectivity, and also discussed strengthening aviation connectivity. The Indian ministers also met Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. Singapore was India's largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2025–26, with an inflow of ₹1.89 lakh crore. Cumulative FDI from Singapore during April 2000–March 2026 stood at ₹18.64 lakh crore. Bilateral trade increased from ₹64.15 thousand crore in 2004–05 to ₹3.45 lakh crore in 2025–26.

Southern Zonal Council Meeting and Inter-State Issues
The 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting was held at Kovalam near Chennai under the Central Government. The meeting was attended by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan. Discussions covered inter-state border security, economic development, industrial investments, education and health. The meeting also discussed long-pending inter-state river water disputes in the southern states, with the Ministry of Jal Shakti and Ministry of Home Affairs involved in facilitating solutions through bilateral discussions. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana agreed to work with the Union Home Ministry to resolve their inter-state land disputes. Measures against malnutrition, implementation of fast-track courts for POCSO cases, and a three-year action plan for drug eradication involving Central and State Government departments were also discussed.
Delimitation: Southern States Seek Protection of Parliamentary Representation
Delimitation and Southern States: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay participated in the Southern Zonal Council meeting held in Chennai on August 20, 2026. Southern states contribute more than 30% of India’s GDP. The issue of delimitation of constituencies was raised in the context of protecting the parliamentary representation of states that have achieved population control. Other issues discussed included prevention of illegal drug trafficking, development of integrated industrial zones, freight terminals and industrial-freight corridors across state borders, and extension of the Bengaluru Metro from Bommasandra to Hosur. Regarding financial devolution, the role of Article 279A(4) of the Constitution in GST-related tax rate decisions was highlighted. The Cauvery river water issue, implementation of Supreme Court judgments and decisions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority, and the Mullaiperiyar Dam water-level issue were also noted. In education, the issue of NEET and admission to MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses under the Tamil Nadu State quota based on Class 12 marks was raised.
Cancer Declared a Notifiable Disease
The Supreme Court has directed the remaining 19 States and Union Territories to consider declaring cancer a notifiable disease and take an appropriate decision. Making cancer notifiable would help in systematic collection of cancer-related data, disease surveillance, treatment planning and formulation of public health policies. Based on recommendations of a Parliamentary Standing Committee, 17 States and Union Territories have already issued such notifications, while Tamil Nadu declared cancer a notifiable disease in 2018. Cancer is a non-communicable disease, and health is primarily included in the State List of the Constitution, while the power to notify diseases is available to both the Central and State governments. In India, around 16 lakh people are affected by cancer annually and about 8.70 lakh deaths are reported. The northeastern States of Mizoram, Meghalaya and Assam have comparatively higher cancer incidence. Globally, around 2 crore people are affected by cancer annually, with about 98 lakh deaths, and the number of new cases is projected to reach around 3.50 crore annually by 2050. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning cancer notification was filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of doctor Anurag Srivastava. The Supreme Court's direction is aimed at strengthening cancer surveillance and facilitating the development of a unified Digital Cancer Registry.
Southern Zonal Council Meeting in Kovalam
The Southern States Chief Ministers’ Conference was held at Kovalam near Chennai in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and representatives of southern States. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu highlighted cooperation among southern States for resolving inter-State issues and promoting regional development, with a proposed goal of building a $10 trillion South Indian economy by 2047. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan stated that Kerala was willing to provide Tamil Nadu its full water share in the event of reconstruction of the Mullaiperiyar Dam, with Kerala bearing the cost of the new dam. The meeting also covered cooperation among southern States, development of Vizhinjam as a major port and maritime economic hub, and one-third reservation for women in Parliament. The participating leaders included Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.
High-Level Committee on NEET Protest
The Supreme Court has constituted a high-level committee headed by retired Supreme Court Judge Subhash Reddy to inquire into alleged police excesses during student protests related to the NEET question paper leak. The committee comprises former Haryana High Court Judge Ravi Shanker Jha, former Delhi High Court Judge Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla, and former Meghalaya DGP L.R. Bishnoi. The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana heard the petitions concerning the protests. The committee will examine allegations of excessive use of force, sexual harassment and molestation of women protesters, cyber harassment, and attacks on police personnel, and will make recommendations on compensation. Further legal action will be considered based on the committee’s report.
Vande Bharat on Chenab Rail Bridge
A Vande Bharat Express was successfully operated at 100 km/h on the Chenab Rail Bridge in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. The bridge is built 1,178 feet above the Chenab River, between Bakkal and Kauri, and is recognised as the world’s highest railway bridge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Chenab Rail Bridge to the nation on June 6, 2025. The Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service was launched by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in April 2026. For safety reasons, the train was initially operated at 75 km/h on the Chenab Rail Bridge, with the speed subsequently increased to 100 km/h.

Praggnanandhaa Finishes Second in Sinquefield Cup
Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa finished second in the Sinquefield Cup Chess Tournament held at the St. Louis Chess Club, USA. After nine rounds, Praggnanandhaa and American player Wesley So scored 5.5 points each. The tie-break consisted of two rapid games, which ended in draws, followed by an Armageddon game. Wesley So, playing with the black pieces, won the title under the Armageddon draw-advantage rule. Praggnanandhaa had already qualified for the Grand Chess Tour Finals by winning the eighth round. The top four players in the Grand Chess Tour points table qualified for the finals: R. Praggnanandhaa – 34.5 points, Wesley So – 34.5 points, Fabiano Caruana – 29.5 points, and Vincent Keymer – 28.5 points.

₹7,015 Crore ‘Singap Pen’ Loan Scheme
Tamil Nadu Cooperation Minister V. Gandhiraj announced the implementation of the ‘Singap Pen’ (Lioness) Loan Scheme through cooperative institutions with an allocation of ₹7,015 crore to promote women entrepreneurship. Rural industrial loans worth ₹5,000 crore will be provided to farmers at 9% interest. A common brand ‘Vetri’ will be introduced for products manufactured by cooperative institutions. All Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Societies will be upgraded to provide at least five services at a cost of ₹20 lakh each. Micro-ATMs will be installed in 3,452 Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies at a cost of ₹6.90 crore. A Farm Procurement system will be introduced with an allocation of ₹50 crore to facilitate the marketing of farmers’ produce. Turmeric, Moringa and Pepper will be exported through Farmer Producer Cooperative Sale Societies at a cost of ₹5 crore. UPI payment facilities will be expanded to 10,000 ration shops. The long-term loan scheme for farmers through Primary Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks will be revived with ₹50 crore. The sale of fertilizers and seeds to farmers through TANFED will be increased to ₹2,500 crore.
