National Vascular Day Awareness Walkathon
The Chennai Vascular Society organised a walkathon at Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar, Chennai, to mark National Vascular Day and create awareness about vascular diseases and limb health. More than 1,000 vascular surgeons, doctors, students and members of the public participated in the event, conducted under the theme “Save Limbs – To Save Life”, with emphasis on early diagnosis and treatment to prevent avoidable amputations. Justice C. Saravanan, Madras High Court, and A. Aravind, Dean, Stanley Medical College, attended the event. K. Elancheralathan, President of the Chennai Vascular Society and Head of the Department of Vascular Surgery, Government Stanley Hospital, was also present.

Ladakh and India’s First Caste Census
Ladakh, one of India’s Union Territories, will be among the regions where the Population Enumeration (PE), the second phase of Census 2027, begins on 17 August 2026. The enumeration is expected to include around 40 parameters and an open-ended field for recording caste details, marking the first caste enumeration in independent India. Although Census 2027 is planned as India’s first digital Census, paper schedules will be used in Ladakh because defence establishments in areas bordering China and Pakistan cannot be geo-tagged for security reasons. A three-day Master Trainers’ Training Programme for Census 2027 has also been completed, covering census concepts, digital tools and the mobile application.
SC Collegium Recommends Four High Court Chief Justices
The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended new Chief Justices for four High Courts at its meeting held on August 6, 2026. Justice V. Kameswar Rao, Delhi High Court, was recommended as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court; he was appointed an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in April 2013 and a permanent judge in March 2015. Justice Ravindra V. Ghuge, Bombay High Court, was recommended as Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court and is serving as Acting Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; he was elevated as a High Court judge in 2013. Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi of the Allahabad High Court was recommended as Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra, whose parent High Court is Allahabad and who is serving in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was recommended as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Andhra Pradesh Tribal Development Measures
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced measures to protect employment opportunities for tribal youth following the Supreme Court’s 2020 decision striking down G.O. No. 3, which provided 100% reservation in teacher posts in Scheduled Areas for local tribal candidates. The State government is working on an alternative legal mechanism for tribal employment. Andhra Pradesh has set a target of providing safe drinking water and housing to every tribal family by 2027. An allocation of ₹4,764 crore has been made for the development of 27.39 lakh tribal people, with focus on infrastructure, livelihoods and skill development through Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs). The State also plans to increase tribal incomes through processing and branding of forest produce such as Seethampeta turmeric, Rampachodavaram rubber and Parvathipuram pineapple, and provide skill training to 1.5 lakh tribal youth.
Telangana’s Inter-State Water Disputes
The Telangana Government is preparing to raise its concerns over unauthorised projects being undertaken by Karnataka across the Krishna River. Under Section 3 of the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, a State can approach the Union Government regarding inter-State river water disputes. Telangana is expected to present its position at the 31st Southern Zonal Council (SZC) meeting, scheduled to be held at Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, on August 20, 2026. Telangana is seeking National Project Status for the Kaleshwaram and Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Projects. Inter-State issues between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh also include the sharing of certain central subsidy amounts and the division of assets of institutions not listed in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

Tamil Nadu Law Commission Reconstituted
The Tamil Nadu Government has reconstituted the Tamil Nadu State Law Commission and appointed Justice D. Krishnakumar, former Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court, as its Chairman. The Law Department issued the Government Order for the reconstitution. Justice R.M.T. Teekaa Raman, former judge of the Madras High Court, T.K. Ramachandran, former Additional Chief Secretary, and A. Arunagiri, former Secretary of the Law Department, have been appointed as full-time members. Former District Judges P. Mohan Doss and R. Govindarajan have been appointed as part-time members, while an officer of the Secretary-level Law Department cadre will serve as the full-time Member-Secretary.
15 New Judges Appointed to Madras High Court
Madras High Court Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari administered the oath of office to 15 new judges, taking the High Court’s working strength to 66 against the sanctioned strength of 75 judges. Vijay Narayan, Advocate-General of Tamil Nadu, introduced the newly appointed judges. Among the eight judges elevated from the Bar, five were appointed as permanent judges and the remaining three as additional judges for a fixed tenure. Justice K. Govindarajan, born in Kulithalai, Karur, in 1972, has practised law since 1994; Justice Rajnish Pathiyil, born in 1973, holds a Master’s degree in Law from the University of California and served as Special Public Prosecutor for the Enforcement Directorate (ED); Justice N. Ramesh, born in Vellore in 1973, served as a Civil Judge in 2003 and returned to legal practice in 2009; Justice G.K. Muthukumar specialises in Intellectual Property Law and has contributed to obtaining Geographical Indication (GI) tags for several products; and Justice R. Rajesh Vivekananthan, born in Thoothukudi in 1975, studied at Madurai Government Law College and served as Deputy Solicitor General. With the new appointments, the Madras High Court has 13 women judges.

Singappen Marathon for Cervical Cancer Awareness
The Singappen Marathon was held at Marina Beach, Chennai, to create awareness about cervical cancer and the National Women Helpline 1091. The marathon covered the route from Island Grounds to Light House and was organised by the Rotary Club of Madras Central, Inner Wheel Clubs of District 323 and the Singappen Special Force. More than 3,000 participants took part in the event. K. Bhavaneeswari, Chief of the Singappen Special Force, flagged off the marathon.
