Kemar Roach Reaches 300 Test Wickets

Kemar Roach reached the milestone of 300 Test wickets during the first Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka held in Antigua. West Indies defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 217 runs on the fourth day of the match, with Roach's achievement marking a significant milestone in his Test career.

Ben Stokes Retires from International Cricket

Ben Stokes, the England all-rounder, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 35. Born in New Zealand, he represented England and finished his Test career with 7,273 runs and 252 wickets in 122 Test matches. His Test batting record includes 14 centuries and 37 half-centuries, while his best bowling performance is 6/22. Stokes played a key role in England's first ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title in 2019 and scored an unbeaten 135 runs in the 2019 Ashes Test at Headingley against Australia. He was also part of the 2016 ICC World T20 Final at Eden Gardens, where Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes in the final over.

Cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics

Cricket has been included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games after its last appearance at the 1900 Paris Olympics. The competition will be played in the T20 format, with 6 teams each in the men's and women's events. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the qualification criteria, under which India, Australia, England, and South Africa have qualified for the women's event as the top teams from Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa, respectively. One additional place will be allotted to the USA, the host nation, if it finishes within the top 15 of the ICC rankings by December 31; otherwise, the place will go to the highest-ranked non-qualified team. The remaining place will be decided through a global qualifying tournament. The qualification process for the men's event will follow a similar format.

Iran Announces Release of Frozen Assets

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that $6 billion out of the $12 billion in Iranian assets frozen in Qatar will be released under an interim agreement. He stated that the agreement includes sanctions relief for Iran's oil and petrochemical sectors. However, the United States stated that no frozen Iranian assets have been released so far, and Qatar has also not confirmed any such transfer. During the recent conflict that began on February 28, following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz affected global oil and natural gas transportation. Iran also carried out attacks on vessels near Oman's waters and launched drone and missile attacks targeting Bahrain and Kuwait.

Persistent Systems to Acquire Nagarro SE

Persistent Systems, an Indian IT company, has proposed to acquire 100% of the shares of Germany-based Nagarro SE. The company has already acquired a 21% stake in Nagarro and has now entered into an agreement to purchase the remaining shares. If completed, the acquisition will become one of the largest overseas investments by an Indian IT company, creating an entity with an annual revenue of about USD 2.9 billion and around 46,000 employees across more than 40 countries. The Board of Directors of Nagarro SE has approved the proposal, and the acquisition will take effect only after approval by shareholders holding more than 50% of the company's shares. Following the announcement, Persistent Systems' share price declined by over 11%, touching its 52-week low in the Indian stock market.

Prime Minister Modi’s Seychelles Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Seychelles on a three-day official visit and met representatives of the Indian diaspora in Victoria. During the visit, he offered prayers at the Arulmigu Navasakti Vinayagar Temple and paid floral tributes to the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Peace Park. He also addressed the Parliament of Seychelles and participated in the country's 50th National Day and 50th Independence celebrations. During the visit, the President of Seychelles conferred the country's highest civilian honour, the Guardian of the Blue Horizon, on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India and Seychelles also reached 19 key agreements and decisions covering the sectors of defence, coastal security, digital payments, space, health, agriculture, and education. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, described the visit as a significant milestone in India–Seychelles bilateral relations.

Union Cabinet Approves Additional Investment in NIIF

The Union Cabinet has approved an additional investment of ₹30,000 crore in the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) for the creation of new funds. With this approval, the Government of India's total commitment to NIIF will increase to ₹60,000 crore. NIIF, in which the Government of India holds a 49% stake, is India's sovereign anchored fund and currently manages capital commitments of around ₹40,000 crore. The additional investment will be used to establish NIIF Infrastructure Fund II, the second infrastructure-focused fund, with a proposed target corpus of ₹30,000 crore. The fund will invest in transportation, energy, digital infrastructure, urban infrastructure, and e-mobility. The allocation will also support NIIF's new fund strategies and upcoming bilateral and strategic funds.

Delhi EV Policy 2026

The Delhi Government has approved a new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy with a ₹7,000 crore budget and a total planned investment of ₹15,000 crore. The policy is expected to come into effect from July 1, 2026, and remain valid until March 31, 2030. Under the policy, only electric three-wheelers and N1 category trucks will be registered from January 1, 2027, and all two-wheelers must shift to electric vehicles from April 1, 2028. School buses must convert at least 10% of their fleet to EVs within two years of the policy notification. Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) has been designated as the nodal agency for developing EV charging infrastructure. The government plans to install 32,000 charging points over the next four years with support from the PM e-Drive Scheme and the Delhi Government. The policy also provides exemption from road tax and registration fees for EVs, purchase incentives, and scrapping incentives, while hybrid vehicles will not receive any subsidy. Subsidies will be transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Centre Removes Fuel Sale Restrictions

The Central Government has withdrawn all restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel across the country with effect from 1 July. The government removed the 200-litre per day limit on retail diesel sales to individual consumers and also lifted restrictions on industrial consumers purchasing fuel from retail outlets. Earlier, on 12 June, the Union Ministry of Petroleum had imposed these restrictions to prevent black marketing, diversion, and hoarding of diesel. Subsequently, on 25 June, the government restored the supply of industrial and commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to pre-conflict levels and removed sector-specific supply limits. The withdrawal of fuel sale restrictions reflects the improvement in the country's fuel supply situation.

e-Sushrut Clinic and Digital Health Initiatives

The Central Government launched e-Sushrut Clinic, a cloud-based Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) for small healthcare centres. The software was launched by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). It automates hospital functions such as patient registration, billing, management information reporting, speech-to-text documentation, and clinical decision support. The software is available at a subsidised monthly fee through collaboration between the National Health Authority (NHA) and C-DAC, with the first three months provided free of cost. During the same event, J.P. Nadda also launched the revamped Aarogya Setu app as a digital platform for maintaining personal health records and accessing healthcare services, and inaugurated the Unified Health Interface (UHI) portal developed under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). He also released the National Ambulance Services Operational Guidelines at the 16th meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare, making AIS-125 compliance mandatory for all ambulances across the country.

Industrial Output Growth Reaches 5.1%

India's Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded a 5.1% growth in May 2026, the highest in the last five months, driven by strong performance in the manufacturing, electricity, capital goods, and consumer goods sectors. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) further revised the IIP series by changing the base year to 2022–23 and incorporating new data sources. The Ministry also replaced the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Producer Price Index (PPI) for measuring selected value-based outputs in the IIP, superseding the earlier WPI-based IIP 2022–23 series released on 1 June 2026. In May 2026, the manufacturing sector grew by 5.5%, the electricity and gas supply sector recorded 9.9% growth, while the mining and quarrying sector contracted by 1.6% for the fifth consecutive month.

Zerodha Applies for Merchant Banking Licence

Zerodha, an online stock brokerage company, has applied to the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a Merchant Banking Licence through its subsidiary Zerodha Corporate Advisors. The application, submitted in April, is under SEBI's consideration. If approved, the company will be authorised to manage Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and provide corporate fund-raising advisory services. Zerodha currently serves more than 1.6 crore customers and also operates mutual fund services through Zerodha AMC. In December of the previous year, SEBI amended the regulations governing merchant bankers, following which 12 other companies also applied for merchant banking licences.

Implementation of the 1994 Yamuna Water Agreement

The Governments of Haryana and Rajasthan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board Agreement in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The agreement aims to supply Rajasthan's share of Yamuna River water from the Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district, Haryana, through an underground pipeline system during the monsoon season. The action plan for implementing the agreement was jointly prepared by Haryana, Rajasthan, and the Central Water Commission (CWC). The event was attended by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma.

The Yamuna River flows through five states and union territories in northern India: Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. It originates at the Yamunotri Glacier in Uttarakhand and travels approximately 1,376 km before merging with the Ganga River at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh

West Bengal OBC Reservation Amendment Bills

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly passed the West Bengal Backward Classes Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and another Bill amending the West Bengal Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993. The Bills remove 113 social groups that were added to the OBC list between 2010 and 2012 by the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and retain only the original 66 social groups that existed before 2010. The Bills also reduce the OBC reservation in the state from 17% to 7%. In May 2024, the Calcutta High Court cancelled the reservation granted to the 113 social groups and also cancelled 12 lakh OBC certificates issued after 2010. The Bills were introduced by Backward Classes Welfare Minister Gourisankar Ghosh and passed by the Assembly.

IIT Madras Study on Women in Police

A study led by IIT Madras and conducted in collaboration with various educational institutions highlighted the need to increase the representation of female police officers in the police force to improve the reporting of gender-based crimes and strengthen public trust. The research was led by Dr. Prateep V. Philip, a retired IPS officer and Professor at IIT Madras, along with Professor Dakshinar Dharmarajan, Dr. Dileep Kumar Rao, and S. Tejaswini. The study on handling crimes against women was published in the international journal Systemic Research and Development Society. According to data from the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), women constituted only 11.75% of India's total police force as of 2022. The study also emphasized the need to provide leadership opportunities, specialized training, institutional support, and decision-making authority to female police officers as part of police reforms.

New Tamil Nadu School Curriculum Committee

The Government of Tamil Nadu has constituted a new School Curriculum Design Committee under the chairmanship of former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai to revise the school curriculum. The Government Order was issued by School Education Department Secretary B. Chandramohan. The committee includes 14 members, including Dr. T.V. Venkateswaran, Professor Rita John of the University of Madras, and former Presidency College Professor Sudanthiramuthu. The Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) will serve as the Member-Secretary, and the committee will have a three-year tenure. As the revised curriculum has already been implemented for Classes 1 to 3, the committee will prepare a new curriculum for Classes 4 to 12 (Plus Two), which will be introduced gradually based on its recommendations.
