Bangladesh Assigns Mongla Port Economic Zone Project to China

Bangladesh has decided to assign the development of the Mongla Port Economic Zone to a Chinese state-owned company following the visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to Beijing. The project will be developed on about 110 acres of land adjacent to Mongla Port in Bagerhat, which had originally been earmarked for an Indian Economic Zone but was later removed under the Muhammad Yunus-led administration. Mongla Port, the second-largest and second-busiest port in Bangladesh after Chittagong, is located about 188 km from Kolkata and close to the Sundarbans. Bangladesh and China also agreed to jointly advance the Mongla Port Facilities Modernization and Expansion Project, develop the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Chattogram, and extend Chinese support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project.

Myanmar Becomes Largest Illicit Opium Producer

According to the annual report of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Myanmar has become the world’s leading source of illicit opium production, surpassing Afghanistan after the Taliban imposed a ban on poppy cultivation. The increase in opium production in Myanmar has been linked to the economic crisis and the ongoing civil conflict following the 2021 military takeover. Shan State remains the main centre of opium cultivation in Myanmar. The report states that a new opium trafficking route from Myanmar passes through the northeastern states of India, posing security challenges and being associated with arms smuggling and terror financing. The Afghanistan–Pakistan–Iran corridor continues to be the world’s major opiate trafficking route. The report also noted that darknet markets, synthetic drugs and the international postal system have emerged as major challenges for drug enforcement agencies. As of 2023, about 316 million people, representing nearly 6% of the global population aged 15–64 years, had used at least one drug, compared to 246 million people in 2013. The report identified synthetic opioids such as Nitazenes, which are significantly stronger than heroin, and drug-related violence as emerging global threats. Encrypted messaging platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal have also emerged as channels for drug distribution, including in India.

US Sanctions on Indian Firm Over Sudan Conflict

The United States imposed sanctions on SBL Energy Limited, a company based in Raipur, India, and its Chief Executive Officer Alok Choudhary on June 27 over allegations of supplying explosives and weapons to an entity linked to the military in Sudan. Sudan has been witnessing an internal conflict between the military and paramilitary forces for several years. The United States also imposed sanctions on certain entities and officials from Egypt and Sudan, along with former Colombian military officer Alvaro Andres Quijano Becerra and his wife Claudia Oliveros Forero, for allegedly supplying weapons and foreign fighters to parties involved in the Sudan conflict. The sanctions were announced by the US Department of State in Washington.

INS Sudarshini in US Independence Day Celebrations

The Indian Navy's INS Sudarshini, an indigenously built sail training ship, arrived at Baltimore, Maryland, USA, on June 27 to participate in the 250th Independence Day celebrations of the United States, which will be observed on July 4. The celebrations are being organized under the banner 'Freedom 250'. INS Sudarshini will take part in the parade of traditional tall ships and modern naval vessels at the Port of Baltimore. The ship began its global voyage named 'Lokayan 26' from Kochi earlier this year with the objective of covering more than 22,000 nautical miles and visiting ports in over 10 countries. The voyage aims to showcase India's maritime heritage and promote the concept of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The World is One Family). The ship has already visited ports in West Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, covering more than 13,000 nautical miles. Before reaching Baltimore, INS Sudarshini visited Norfolk, Virginia, and participated in events there.

Donald Trump Avenue in Hyderabad

The Telangana Government has named a road in Hyderabad as "Donald Trump Avenue". The road is located near the United States Consulate in Hyderabad and houses major American companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon. The new name board was inaugurated by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gore. US President Donald Trump acknowledged the naming of the road on his Truth Social platform. The Telangana Government stated that the naming of the road recognizes the growing role of Hyderabad in strengthening India–US relations.

India–Seychelles Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a three-day official visit to Seychelles beginning on June 27. Seychelles, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, is regarded as India’s important maritime neighbour. Prime Minister Modi held bilateral discussions with President Patrick Herminie and participated as the chief guest at the 50th National Day celebrations of Seychelles held on June 29. The year 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, which have continued since Seychelles gained independence in 1976. The two countries cooperate in areas such as maritime security, health, education, capacity building, climate resilience, sustainable development, and blue economy. Prime Minister Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the Seychelles Parliament. India presented an Indian-made fast patrol boat, 6 ambulances, 10 cars, and 5 Laser Radial boats to the Seychelles Coast Guard. Seychelles is an important partner in India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. Prime Minister Modi last visited Seychelles in 2015.

Bharat Taxi Launched in Gujarat

Union Minister for Home and Cooperative Affairs Amit Shah launched the cooperative-sector taxi service, Bharat Taxi, in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Saturday. The service has been introduced in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Mehsana, Anand, Valsad, Junagadh, Jamnagar, and Bhavnagar. Bharat Taxi follows a cooperative model and has been launched under the cooperative sector. According to the information released, 7,00,000 drivers (Sarathis) associated with Bharat Taxi are its owners and shareholders.

World’s First Nuclear-Based Hydrogen Plant at Kalpakkam

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has established the world’s first hydrogen production plant using nuclear energy at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, near Chennai. The facility utilizes heat generated from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) to produce hydrogen through the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) Thermochemical Cycle using copper and chlorine chemicals. The plant was inaugurated by Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy, in the presence of Srikumar G. Pillai, Director of IGCAR. The technology was indigenously developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. The facility has been established as a pilot plant to demonstrate hydrogen production using nuclear energy and to support future research on commercial hydrogen production through nuclear technology.

Polio Vaccination Camp 2026

The Polio Vaccination Camp for the year 2026 will be conducted across India on June 28, with a target to administer polio drops to 52.91 lakh children below five years of age in Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the camp at the Adi Dravidar Welfare High School, Palavakkam, Chennai. India has been included in the list of polio-eradicated countries, and therefore polio drops are now administered once every year instead of two rounds. The vaccination drive in Tamil Nadu will be conducted from 7 AM to 5 PM through 43,051 centres, including government hospitals, primary health centres, Anganwadi centres, nutrition centres, schools, and other important locations. More than 3,000 government vehicles and over 2 lakh personnel, including health workers, Anganwadi staff, teachers, and volunteers, are involved in the campaign. Vaccination arrangements have also been made at bus stands, railway stations, airports, and check posts, and mobile teams have been formed for remote areas. Children who have already received vaccines under the National Immunization Schedule are also required to receive polio drops during the camp. Temporary centres will function on June 29 and 30 for children who miss the main camp.

Director K. Bhagyaraj Passes Away

Veteran Tamil film director and actor K. Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on June 27 at the age of 73 due to cardiac arrest. He began his film career as an assistant director under Bharathiraja and made his directorial debut with "Suvarilladha Chithirangal". He worked as an assistant director in "16 Vayathinile" and "Kizhakke Pogum Rail", and co-wrote the story for "Kizhakke Pogum Rail" and "Tik Tik Tik". He wrote dialogues for "Sigappu Rojakkal" and directed more than 25 films while acting in over 70 films. Some of his notable films include "Indru Poi Naalai Vaa", "Antha 7 Naatkal", "Thooral Ninnu Pochu", "Munthanai Mudichu", "Dhavani Kanavugal", and "Avasara Police 100". He served as the editor of the weekly magazine "Bhagya" and received several awards for his contributions to cinema. The Tamil Nadu Government announced state honours for his funeral. Bhagyaraj had also registered for eye donation, and his eyes were donated after his death.

India’s Telecom Subscribers Reach 134.31 Crore

According to the monthly report of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), the total telecom subscriber base in India increased from 133.75 crore in April to 134.31 crore in May, recording a monthly growth rate of 0.42 percent. During May, 55.6 lakh new telecom subscribers were added. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio together accounted for 52.36 lakh new subscribers. Bharti Airtel added 29.8 lakh new subscribers, while Reliance Jio added 22.55 lakh subscribers. The total wireless subscriber base increased from 128.89 crore to 129.44 crore, including 114.58 crore consumer SIMs, 13.11 crore M2M SIMs, and 1.17 crore fixed wireless connections. The total broadband subscriber base increased from 107.34 crore to 108 crore. In the broadband segment, Reliance Jio remained the largest service provider with 52.96 crore subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel (37.6 crore), Vodafone Idea (12.9 crore) and BSNL (2.7 crore).

e-Sushrut Clinic Software

The Central Government will launch the low-cost Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) software named e-Sushrut Clinic on June 29 for small medical clinics. The software was developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), New Delhi, and will be launched by Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. The cloud-based platform automates functions such as patient registration, billing, management information reporting, speech-to-text documentation, and clinical decision support. Only medical professionals registered in the Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR) can use the platform. More than 800 medical centres have already registered, and the software has been implemented in 15 AIIMS hospitals and several state government hospitals. The National Health Authority (NHA) and C-DAC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation, maintenance, and development of the software. The subscription fee has been fixed at ₹499 per month for five users, with a ₹200 subsidy under the NHA–C-DAC collaboration, reducing the cost to ₹299 per month, and the service will be provided free for the first three months. The updated Aarogya Setu application will also be launched on June 29 as a single digital platform for maintaining personal health records and accessing healthcare services.
