Prabhjeet Singh Appointed OpenAI India MD

Prabhjeet Singh, the India head of Uber India, resigned after serving the company for 11 years to join OpenAI as its Managing Director (MD) for India. According to the announcement made by OpenAI in June 2026, he will assume the position in September 2026. He will become the senior-most OpenAI executive in India and will oversee consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and operations. He will report to Kiran Mani, the Managing Director for Asia Pacific, who joined OpenAI earlier from JioHotstar. The company stated that India is among the largest markets for ChatGPT based on weekly active users and is also among the top five countries for Application Programming Interface (API) users. OpenAI further stated that Prabhjeet Singh will focus on partnerships and supporting India’s AI ecosystem.

GPT-5.6 Public Release Deferred

OpenAI announced on June 27 that it has postponed the full public release of GPT-5.6 following a request from the United States Government. Initial access to the AI model has been restricted to a small group of verified partners. The decision is linked to concerns regarding the national security implications of advanced artificial intelligence systems. OpenAI stated that the limited release is a temporary measure while discussions continue with the U.S. government regarding a broader framework for future AI model releases. Earlier in the month, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order establishing a voluntary framework under which AI developers may provide frontier AI models to the U.S. government up to 30 days before release to trusted partners. Earlier, the U.S. government also directed Anthropic to suspend access to its frontier AI models for foreign nationals citing security concerns.

Venezuela Earthquake and International Relief

Two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela resulted in 920 deaths and 3,360 injuries. Several coastal towns near the capital Caracas were severely affected. India sent rescue teams and relief materials to Venezuela two days after the disaster. According to the humanitarian registration portal, details of 50,000 affected persons had been recorded. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez announced that 2,600 schools in Caracas had been converted into relief shelters. Several countries, including the United States, Brazil, Qatar, Spain, Portugal, Colombia, and Mexico, sent rescue teams and relief materials to Venezuela. The United States also relaxed certain sanctions on Venezuela to facilitate disaster relief and announced 150 million US dollars in assistance, besides sending two ships, a mobile hospital, and ambulances.

India Joins AI Joint Declaration

At the Second Pax Silica Summit held in Washington, D.C., 35 countries, including India, signed a joint declaration to promote opportunities in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Pax Silica initiative was launched by the United States in December 2025 to enhance access to AI technology, semiconductors, energy resources, and critical mineral supply chains. India joined the initiative in February 2026 during the AI summit held in India. India was represented at the summit by S. Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and Nagaraj Naidu, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs. Member countries of the initiative include India, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy, Argentina, the Netherlands, Chile, Costa Rica, Greece, Kazakhstan, Panama, and the European Union.

16th India–Japan Annual Summit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit India on a three-day official visit from July 1 to 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, she will participate in the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit to be held in New Delhi. The summit will focus on strengthening cooperation in trade, economy, defence and investment between India and Japan, besides discussing issues of regional and international importance. This will be the first official visit of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to India. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tokyo, Japan, in August 2025 to participate in the India–Japan Annual Summit.

Operation Amistad for Venezuela

India launched Operation Amistad to provide humanitarian assistance to Venezuela following two powerful earthquakes that occurred on June 25, resulting in 920 deaths and 3,360 injuries. Under this operation, the Ministry of External Affairs sent relief materials to Venezuela on June 26 using two Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft. A 41-member rescue team was also deployed to support relief and rescue operations. According to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, India dispatched 35 tonnes of relief materials, including medicines, medical equipment and ambulances, to the earthquake-affected country as part of Operation Amistad.

Herbalife-IIT Madras Centre for Plant Cell Fermentation

At IIT Madras, Chennai, the Herbalife-IIT Madras Centre of Excellence was established in collaboration with Herbalife International India to promote Plant Cell Fermentation Technology. The centre was inaugurated by Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of CSIR and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). It is the country's first dedicated laboratory for applied research and innovation in plant cell fermentation technology and aims to function as a national centre in this field. The technology focuses on cultivating living plant cells to produce high-value phytochemicals, pharmaceuticals and herbal extracts through biotechnology. The centre aims to enable sustainable and scalable production of biomaterials and value-added plant products. It also promotes academic-industry collaboration, skill development and entrepreneurship in line with the BioE3 initiative and Atmanirbhar Bharat. The event was presided over by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras. Important participants included Virendra R. Tiwari, Chairman of the National Biodiversity Authority, Ajay Khanna, Managing Director of Herbalife International India, Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of IIT Madras, and Smita Srivastava, Head of the Centre.

Organ Transplant Survival Data Disclosure

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has directed State governments to instruct registered organ transplant hospitals to publish post-transplant survival data on their official websites. The initiative aims to improve transparency in kidney, lung, and heart transplant outcomes and help patients make informed decisions while choosing hospitals. Hospitals have been instructed to follow informed consent procedures and provide complete information regarding transplant procedures, risks, and outcomes to patients and their families. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), functioning under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), issued the communication to States and Union Territories. The move followed a representation by Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta seeking greater transparency and accountability in transplant outcomes. NOTTO maintains the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Registry, which contains data on organ donors and recipients. Registered transplant hospitals have been directed to display survival data on their website homepages, including the number of patients surviving after six months, one year, three years, and five years after transplantation. The initiative is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability, outcome monitoring, and evidence-based policy decisions in organ transplantation.

One Year of Special Intensive Revision (SIR)

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls completed one year after its launch by the Election Commission of India. The first phase of SIR was initiated in Bihar on June 24, 2025, resulting in the removal of 65 lakh voter names from the electoral rolls. In the second phase, SIR was conducted in 12 States and Union Territories, including Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. After completion of the exercise during February–March 2026, the total number of voters in these regions decreased from 50.99 crore to 45.81 crore. A total of 66.88 lakh deceased voters were removed from the electoral rolls, with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest removal of 25.47 lakh voters, followed by West Bengal with 24.16 lakh voters. In March 2026, the Supreme Court upheld the SIR exercise conducted by the Election Commission. The third phase of SIR commenced on May 14, 2026, in 16 States and Union Territories, covering 36.73 crore voters.

Final Operational Clearance for Netra AEW&C System

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has granted Final Operational Clearance (FOC) to the indigenously developed ‘Netra’ Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) System. The system was designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with the participation of the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS). The FOC certificate was introduced at a function held in Bengaluru by Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff. The Netra AEW&C project received design approval in 2004, and the final operational clearance was granted after 22 years. The system has been developed through the joint efforts of the Indian Air Force and DRDO in the areas of design, development, integration, testing and operationalization. The newly approved Netra AEW&C system has been integrated into six Indian Air Force aircraft.

Relaxation of Food and Drug Law Penalties

The Central Government has relaxed penalties for minor and technical violations under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The reforms have been implemented by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under the Jan Vishwas Act, which aims to decriminalize minor business-related offences and promote ease of doing business. Criminal proceedings for technical and procedural violations in the food, drug and cosmetics sectors have been converted into administrative penalty mechanisms. Section 29 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which provided for a penalty of up to ₹1 lakh for using a Government Analyst's report in advertisements of drugs or cosmetics, has been omitted. Minor violations relating to low-risk cosmetics, quality deficiencies, labelling errors, maintenance of sales records and submission of information have also been brought under administrative procedures. However, strict penal provisions will continue for offences involving adulterated or spurious cosmetics that affect consumer safety. The imprisonment term for offences related to obstruction of seized goods under these laws has been reduced from six months to three months.

Nuclear-Based Hydrogen Production at Kalpakkam

The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) inaugurated the world's first hydrogen production facility based on the Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) thermochemical cycle at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, on June 26. The plant utilizes nuclear process heat generated from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) for hydrogen production. The facility was inaugurated by Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, in the presence of Sreekumar G. Pillai, Director of IGCAR. The Copper-Chlorine thermochemical process used in the plant was developed indigenously by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. The facility serves as a technology demonstration plant for validating hydrogen production using nuclear energy and supports future research on large-scale commercial production of carbon-free hydrogen. The process reduces dependence on fossil fuels and eliminates greenhouse gas emissions associated with conventional hydrogen production methods.

Operation Sindoor Martyrs Honoured

Following the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025, in which 26 persons were killed, India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6–7, 2025, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was followed by a four-day military confrontation between the two countries. The names of six personnel who lost their lives during Operation Sindoor have been engraved on the walls of the National War Memorial, New Delhi, and were also published on the memorial website. The martyrs are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Kanil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer Murali Nayak, Havildar Kanil Kumar Singh, and Indian Air Force personnel Karendra Kumar. The National War Memorial, located in the India Gate complex, New Delhi, has inscribed the words “Operation Sindoor” and the year 2025 on the wall marked “3D”, where the names of the six personnel have been engraved.

The Hindu Group Named Champion Publisher 2026

The The Hindu Group has been selected as the ‘Champion Publisher of the Year 2026’ by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). The group has received this recognition for the third time and secured a total of seven awards at the WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards South Asia 2026. The title is awarded to the publisher winning the highest number of awards in the annual competition. The Hindu received gold awards for ‘Bihar SIR’ in the Best AI-driven News Product, Format or Strategy category and ‘Young World Club’ in the Best News Website or App Relaunch category. It won a silver award for ‘Written by Journalists’ in the Best in Countering Disinformation category. The group also received bronze awards for ‘Made of Chennai’, ‘The Hindu Explains’, and ‘We Went Middle East, Talked INR, and Found Gold!’. Frontline won a bronze award for ‘Mission Manipur’ in the Best Use of Audio category. The award was received by L.V. Navaneeth, Chief Executive Officer of The Hindu Group, at the Digital Media India 2026 Conference held in New Delhi. Ramagiri Gold Blocks Re-auction in Andhra Pradesh

The Andhra Pradesh Government is planning to re-auction the Ramagiri North and Ramagiri South Gold Blocks located in Ananthapuramu district of the Rayalaseema region, with the tender notification proposed to be issued in July. The two gold blocks cover a total area of 2,000 hectares, with 1,000 hectares each in the northern and southern sectors. The blocks are being offered under a Composite Licence (CL) and have been explored up to the G4 reconnaissance level by the Mineral Exploration, Research and Innovation Trust (MERIT). The Ramagiri Gold Field has a long mining history, and modern commercial mining was carried out between 1905 and 1925 by companies managed by John Taylor and Sons of London. The region later came under Bharat Gold Mines Limited (BGML), the Union Government undertaking that operated the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF). The operations of BGML were discontinued in 2001. The Ramagiri Greenstone Belt is considered one of the important gold-bearing belts of the Eastern Dharwar Craton and is comparable to the Kolar, Hutti, and Veligallu gold belts.

Venkata Narayana Appointed as Delhi Special Representative

K. Venkata Narayana has been appointed as the Special Representative of the Government of Tamil Nadu in New Delhi. The appointment was made through a Government Order issued by Chief Secretary Saikumar. He has been appointed on a temporary basis for a period of one year. The post of Special Representative in Delhi carries powers and responsibilities equivalent to those of a Cabinet Minister. The Government Order states that the rules and conditions relating to the appointment will be issued separately. K. Venkata Narayana is also known as the producer of the film “Jananayagan.”

Tamil Nadu Medical Insurance Scheme Extended

The Government of Tamil Nadu has increased the medical insurance coverage for government employees and pensioners from ₹5 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh. The insurance coverage for certain specified illnesses has been increased from ₹10 lakh to ₹12 lakh. A Government Order (GO) was issued by the State Finance Department Secretary, and the revised scheme will come into effect from July 1 and remain in force until June 30, 2031. The medical insurance scheme, which was initially implemented in 2021, covers about 15 lakh government employees and 11 lakh pensioners in the state. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can avail cashless treatment in government hospitals and 1,535 empanelled private hospitals. Following the expiry of the existing scheme, a new agreement has been signed with United India Insurance Company. Under the revised scheme, government employees, pensioners and their family members can receive medical assistance up to ₹12 lakh for specified diseases and up to a cumulative limit of ₹27 lakh.
