UN Report on AI’s Water and Energy Consumption

The United Nations University (UNU) Institute for Water, Environment and Health has warned that the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could significantly increase the consumption of water, electricity, and land resources by 2030. According to the report, AI depends on a large physical infrastructure including data centres, advanced computer chips, cooling systems, and energy infrastructure. The study states that the water required for AI-operated data centres could exceed the amount of water consumed by 1.3 billion Indians by 2030. It also estimates that AI-based data centres may consume 945 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually by 2030, which is nearly three times the combined annual electricity consumption of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. The report highlights the need to consider the impact of AI development on water, land, and energy resources.

Green Restoration of PEKB Coal Mine

The Parsa East and Kanta Basan (PEKB) Coal Mine located in Surguja district, Chhattisgarh, and operated by Adani Enterprises for Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL), has been transformed into a green zone through the planting of more than 16 lakh saplings across 568 hectares. The project aims to increase the number of trees to 40 lakh by 2030. Under the restoration programme, 40 native trees are planted for every tree cut during mining operations, with a reported 88% survival rate. A nursery spread over 3.5 hectares with 5 lakh saplings has also been established. In addition, compensatory afforestation activities have been undertaken over more than 4,000 hectares in various forest divisions. For these activities, over ₹259 crore has been deposited with the Government of Chhattisgarh.

Kaziranga Bird Survey Records Raptors and Storks

A rapid bird survey conducted in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, Assam, by the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve Authority in collaboration with Gauhati University researchers recorded 30 species of raptors and 6 species of storks. The survey was carried out by a 10-member team between the last week of February and March 2, 2026, and the findings were released on World Environment Day (June 5). A total of 217 individual raptors and 266 individual storks were recorded. The study covered the East Assam Wildlife Division, Biswanath Wildlife Division, and Nagaon Wildlife Division. India is home to 112 species of raptors, while Kaziranga and its surrounding landscape support about 50 raptor species. Among the storks, the Asian Openbill (Anastomus oscitans) was the most abundant with 92 individuals, while the Greater Adjutant Stork (Leptoptilos dubius) was the rarest with 3 individuals. Among raptors, the Himalayan Griffon Vulture (Gyps himalayensis) was the most common with 69 sightings. A 2020 survey by the Wildlife Institute of India recorded 10 active nests of Pallas’s Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) in Kaziranga.

Nepal Foreign Minister’s Visit to India

Nepal Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal visited India on an official visit and held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on June 6. The discussions reviewed India–Nepal relations, including cooperation in development, trade, energy supply, innovation, and start-up sectors. The two sides also exchanged views on regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. During the visit, Shishir Khanal also met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. This was the first visit by Nepal’s Foreign Minister to India since the formation of the new government in Nepal in March 2026. The visit took place amid discussions relating to the India–Nepal border issue, with the Nepal Foreign Ministry reiterating its commitment to resolving border matters through dialogue and diplomatic channels.

China–Taiwan Animal Exchange Resumes After 12 Years

After a gap of 12 years, China and Taiwan resumed an animal exchange programme. As part of this initiative, two endangered Red Pandas were transferred from Fujian Province, China, to a zoo in Taipei, Taiwan. The animals include a 3-year-old male and a 2-year-old female Red Panda, which have been placed under a one-month quarantine period. In return, Taiwan is set to send rare white gibbons to Shanghai, China. Taiwan had previously received Red Pandas from China in 2014. The exchange took place amid continuing political tensions between China and Taiwan.

SpaceX IPO Fundraising Plan

SpaceX has proposed an Initial Public Offering (IPO) to raise $75 billion, and investor demand has reportedly reached about $150 billion, indicating oversubscription. The company is considering allocating up to 30% of the IPO shares to individual investors. Share offerings are planned in countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Norway. Through its space-launch, internet-connection, and artificial intelligence (AI) businesses, SpaceX has highlighted future market opportunities. The company also emphasized the role of its Starlink internet business and its rocket-launch operations during the IPO marketing process.

Expansion of Kolkata Metro and Bullet Train Plans

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that 60 next-generation trains will be introduced in the Kolkata Metro over the next five years. He stated that 45 kilometres of metro network have been added in Kolkata since 2014, while 28 kilometres had been completed during the previous 42 years. The Ministry of Railways has also planned two bullet train corridors, one between Delhi and Varanasi and another between Varanasi and Siliguri (West Bengal). In West Bengal, 102 railway stations are proposed for modernization, and 538 railway overbridges and underpasses are planned. The state government has provided land for 60 railway projects and issued 40 No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for railway infrastructure works.

Kerala Launches e-Court Integration for Wildlife Crime Cases

The Kerala Forest Department has launched an e-court integration feature for its HAWK (Hostile Activity Watch Kernel) system to improve the prosecution of wildlife crime cases. The system establishes a direct digital connection between the Forest Department and the District Court Management System through an Application Programming Interface (API). This integration enables digital exchange of case-related information and eliminates the need for physical paperwork in wildlife crime prosecution.

Standard Packaging Norms for Edible Oils

The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Central Government has made standardized packaging sizes mandatory for edible oils to facilitate easier price comparison by consumers. The prescribed packaging sizes are 200 ml/g, 500 ml/g, 1 litre/kg, 2 litres/kg, 3 litres/kg, 4 litres/kg, 5 litres/kg, 15 litres/kg, and 20 litres/kg. The rule applies to edible oils produced from palm, sunflower, groundnut, mustard, and corn, as well as other edible oil varieties. The norms are applicable to both domestic manufacturers and importers of edible oils. Packages containing less than 200 ml or 200 g are exempted from the regulation. All companies have been directed to comply with the new standards within three months.

Mirra Andreeva Wins French Open 2026

Mirra Andreeva of Russia won the French Open 2026 Women's Singles title held in Paris, defeating Maja Chwalińska of Poland in the final by 6-3, 6-2. This was Andreeva’s first Grand Slam title. At the age of 19, she became the second-youngest player to win the French Open since Monica Seles, who won the title at the age of 18 in 1992. Andreeva also became the first player born after 2005 to win a Grand Slam title. Prior to this achievement, she had won two WTA 1000 titles. The trophy was presented by Mary Pierce of France, the winner of the 2000 French Open women's singles title.

India Wins SAFF Women’s Championship 2026

India won the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 title by defeating Bangladesh 3-1 in the final held at Marmagao, Goa. With this victory, India secured the championship for the sixth time and regained the title after seven years. In the final, Pyari Xaxa, Sanfida Nongrum, and Lynda Serto scored for India, while Purna Chakma scored the lone goal for Bangladesh. Earlier in the tournament, India had also defeated Bangladesh 3-0 in the group stage.

Vaishali Wins WR Chess Women’s Tour Title

R. Vaishali won the WR Chess Women’s Tour title held in Tokyo, Japan. She secured the championship by defeating Irine Sukandar, Alexandra Kosteniuk, and Alua Nurmanova during the tournament. Vaishali had earlier won the Candidates Tournament, earning qualification for the Women’s World Chess Championship. She is scheduled to face China’s Ju Wenjun in the World Championship match to be held in November 2026. The title victory came shortly after her brother R. Praggnanandhaa won the Norway Chess Tournament.

Indian T20 Squad Announced for Ireland, England and Asian Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian T20 squad for the Ireland and England series and the Asian Games. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain, while Tilak Varma has been named the vice-captain. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, a 15-year-old cricketer, has received his first call-up to the Indian team. The squad also includes Ravi Bishnoi, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Prince Yadav. For the Asian Games, Jasprit Bumrah has been included in the squad. India is scheduled to play T20 matches against Ireland on June 26 and 28, followed by a five-match T20 series against England from July 1 to 11.

New Taipei City Athletics Open 2026

At the New Taipei City Athletics Open, Shaili Singh won the gold medal in the women's long jump event with a jump of 6.24 metres. The Indian women's 4x100m relay team comprising S.S. Sneha, Srabani Nanda, Sudeshna Shivankar, and Tamanna won the gold medal by clocking 44.07 seconds and equalled the meet record. In the men's 110m hurdles, Tejas Shirse secured the silver medal with a timing of 13.58 seconds.

FDI in India Increases by 18% in FY 2025–26

According to data released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India increased by 18% to USD 58.84 billion during FY 2025–26. The total FDI inflow, including equity inflows, reinvested earnings, and other capital, reached USD 94.50 billion, recording a 17% growth over the previous financial year. Singapore remained the largest source of FDI with USD 19.80 billion, followed by the United States (USD 11.17 billion), Mauritius (USD 6.57 billion), Japan (USD 3.74 billion), and the Netherlands (USD 3.37 billion). Among sectors, Computer Software and Hardware attracted the highest investment at USD 13.94 billion, followed by the Services Sector (USD 10 billion) and Trading Sector (USD 4 billion). Among states, Maharashtra ranked first with USD 18.41 billion in FDI inflows, followed by Karnataka (USD 12.93 billion) and Gujarat (USD 5.71 billion).
