Southwest Monsoon Onset in Kerala

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the Southwest Monsoon commenced over Kerala on 4 June. The Southwest Monsoon normally begins on 1 June and continues until September, bringing widespread rainfall to Kerala and the adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu. Although the IMD had earlier predicted the onset on 26 May, the monsoon arrived later than expected. Following its onset, heavy rainfall was reported across Kerala, and the IMD issued an Orange Alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam districts, indicating possible rainfall between 110 mm and 200 mm. The IMD had earlier projected that the monsoon rainfall during the year could be below normal due to the influence of El Niño. The department also stated that El Niño is expected to weaken during June and may strengthen to a moderate or strong phase by September.

PM Modi to Surpass Nehru’s Democratic Tenure Record

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is serving his third consecutive term, is set to complete 4,399 days in office on 10 June, surpassing the record of 4,398 days held by Jawaharlal Nehru as the longest-serving Prime Minister continuously elected through the democratic process after the first Lok Sabha election of 1952. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, served from 15 August 1947 until 27 May 1964. Narendra Modi first assumed office as Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 after the victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 Lok Sabha election and continued in office following the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Prior to becoming Prime Minister, Modi served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014.

Supreme Court Draft Guidelines on AI Use in Courts

The Supreme Court of India released a 35-page draft guideline on 4 June for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in courts. The guidelines state that AI systems can be used for case management, listing of petitions, automated transcription of court proceedings, translation of legal documents into regional languages, legal research assistance, and chatbots for litigants, subject to human oversight and approval. The draft guidelines prohibit the use of AI for judicial decision-making, including delivering judgments, sentencing, and assessing the credibility of witnesses. The guidelines also require compliance with data protection laws and prohibit the use of personal data for AI training or testing without prior authorization. A three-tier institutional framework will be established to oversee AI-based digital transformation in courts, and a full-time regulatory commission headed by a Supreme Court judge will be constituted to set mandatory standards. Dedicated AI Committees will be established in every High Court, and an AI Research and Specialization Centre will be created to conduct research and provide technical advice. All AI systems used in courts must undergo an annual audit. The Supreme Court has invited comments on the draft guidelines from the public and stakeholders until 20 June.

Financial Powers of Field Commanders Enhanced

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the enhancement of financial powers of Field Commanders of the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy on 4 June. Under the revised provisions, the financial allocation limit for Field Commanders has been increased from ₹40 crore to ₹100 crore, while the limit for emergency financial allocations has been raised from ₹75 crore to ₹150 crore. The decision aims to strengthen field operations and expedite defence-related procurement and contracts. New rules have also been introduced for coordinated procurement of equipment by the three armed services and for decentralizing the procurement of goods and services in the defence sector. During the event in New Delhi, Chief of Defence Staff Raja Subramani, Chief of the Army Staff Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Naval Staff Krishna Swaminathan, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh were present. On the occasion, Rajnath Singh released the revised handbook titled “Delegation of Financial Powers to Defence Services.”

Facial Recognition Introduced in UPSC Civil Services Prelims 2026

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced on 4 June that Facial Recognition Technology was successfully implemented for the first time in the 2026 Civil Services Preliminary Examination held on 24 May. The technology was introduced to prevent impersonation by matching candidates' faces with the photographs uploaded during the application process. A total of 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the examination conducted for recruitment to services such as IAS, IPS, and IFS. The facial verification process was carried out through a mobile application developed by UPSC with technical support from the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Guidelines were issued in advance to examination centres and districts across all states, and invigilators were provided training for implementation. The verification process for each candidate took approximately 6 to 8 seconds and was completed successfully across all examination centres.

India’s First Flex-Fuel Car Launched

Maruti Suzuki launched India’s first Flex-Fuel car, the WagonR Flex-Fuel, on 4 June in New Delhi. The vehicle is designed to operate on fuel blends ranging from 20% ethanol to 100% ethanol, as well as petrol, and is equipped with an advanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that automatically detects the ethanol content in the fuel and adjusts engine performance accordingly. The launch event was attended by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The Central Government has announced plans to establish 100 ethanol fuel stations in Delhi and Maharashtra, with the number expected to increase to 500 by the end of the current year and 5,000 by the end of the following year. Hisashi Takeuchi, CEO of Maruti Suzuki, stated that the company is developing various vehicle technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and crude oil imports.

Ethanol Fuel Stations in India

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on June 2026 that the Government of India is establishing 50 to 100 ethanol fuel stations in Delhi-NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports. The government aims to increase the number of ethanol fuel stations to 500 by the end of 2026 and to 5,000 by the end of 2027. The announcement was made during the launch of India’s first flex-fuel car by Maruti Suzuki. The minister stated that making Euro VI standard vehicles compatible with E100 (100% ethanol) fuel could help reduce fossil fuel imports valued at about 120 billion US dollars. The government is also working on measures such as road tax concessions, pricing support, availability of E85 test fuel, and special identification for Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs). If half of the new vehicles become flex-fuel compatible, India could generate an additional demand of 311.8 crore litres of ethanol and provide ₹12,403 crore in additional income to farmers. Ethanol blending in petrol has increased from 1.5% in 2014 to 20% at present, resulting in foreign exchange savings of ₹1.84 lakh crore.

Annual IAS Knowledge-Sharing Programme at Statue of Unity

Under a new initiative of the Union Government, senior and junior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers from across India will annually participate in a mentorship and knowledge-sharing programme at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. The initiative is based on the vision proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 5th National Conference of Chief Secretaries (2025). The Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has directed all States and Union Territories to nominate senior and young IAS officers from diverse batches and governance backgrounds. The officers will gather every year on October 31, observed as National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas), to exchange knowledge and administrative experiences. The programme is being coordinated by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and focuses on areas such as governance, public administration, and policy formulation.

BART Trial on Bladder Cancer

A major clinical study led by Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH), Mumbai, across four Indian cancer centres over eight years found that radiation therapy administered after bladder removal surgery can reduce the risk of bladder cancer recurring in the pelvis by more than 50%. The findings of the Bladder Adjuvant Radiotherapy (BART) Trial were published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. The study was led by Dr. Vedang Murthy, Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, Tata Memorial Centre. The trial included 153 patients who had undergone surgery for bladder cancer, with half receiving post-surgery pelvic radiation therapy and the remainder kept under observation. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), bladder cancer is the ninth most common cancer in the world. As per Global Cancer Observatory (2022) data, India records about 22,548 new bladder cancer cases and 12,353 deaths annually, making it the 17th most common cancer in India. The study also found that fewer than 5% of patients experienced severe side effects from radiation therapy.

First World Yogasana Championship Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the First World Yogasana Championship on June 4, 2026, through a video message from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The championship was held in Ahmedabad, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and marked the beginning of a global competitive platform for Yogasana. The event was organized ahead of the International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21. The Prime Minister noted that 190 countries had supported India's proposal at the United Nations for the declaration of the International Day of Yoga. He also highlighted the Ministry of Ayush's "Yoga 365" campaign and stated that the theme of International Day of Yoga 2026 is "Yoga for Healthy Ageing". The main International Yoga Day programme for 2026 is scheduled to be held in Kolkata.

73rd Plenary Session of North Eastern Council

The 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) was held in Shillong, Meghalaya, under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah. The session reviewed the implementation of recommendations made by the High-Level Task Force constituted for the development, prosperity, and cultural identity of the Northeast. Discussions included strengthening the Single Window Clearance System to promote investment in the region, enhancing trade through the Sabroom Land Port and customs centres in Meghalaya and Mizoram, and implementing the Drug-Free Northeast Campaign to combat narcotics trafficking. The meeting also focused on achieving self-reliance in fish and milk production in the northeastern states with support from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and the Ministry of Cooperation.

NeVA Implementation in West Bengal Assembly

A Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for implementing the National e-Vidhan Application (NeVA) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly was signed on 4 June 2026. The event was held in the presence of Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, and Rathindra Bose, Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Suvendu Adhikari, Chief Minister of West Bengal, participated virtually. Nikunja Bihari Dhal, Secretary, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, and Satya Prakash, Additional Secretary and Mission Leader of NeVA, were also present. The NeVA project aims to digitise legislative functioning and improve the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of assembly proceedings, with support from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Central Project Monitoring Unit (CPMU).

ANRF Portal for Patent Filing and Research Training

On 4 June 2026, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, Prime Minister’s Office, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, announced an ANRF-supported digital portal to provide training and assistance in patent filing, research paper writing, and intellectual property (IP) protection for researchers, students, and innovators across India. The announcement was made during a joint review meeting of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), and the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The meeting reviewed scientific initiatives, institutional coordination, science administration reforms, outreach activities, and the implementation of schemes and projects.

Development Projects Launched in Surat

On 5 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated, dedicated to the nation, and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth over ₹18,800 crore in Surat, Gujarat. The projects cover the road, power, and industrial sectors and include the Tapi Barrage Project, electric mobility initiatives, expansion of the Surat Metro Network, and green steel production in the Hazira Industrial Area using renewable energy. The Prime Minister also highlighted major infrastructure projects such as the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway, Bullet Train Project, and Dedicated Freight Corridor. He noted that Gujarat contributes 50 GW out of India’s 250 GW renewable energy capacity and is emerging as a leader in the Green Hydrogen sector. The Dahod–Bodeli–Vapi Corridor was also highlighted as a project aimed at improving connectivity to tribal and remote areas.

Seventh Regional Meteorological Centre in Jammu

On 5 June 2026, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, inaugurated the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Jammu, which became India’s seventh Regional Meteorological Centre. The centre will serve Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh and provide district-level weather forecasts, tourist advisories, and warnings related to flash floods, cloudbursts, avalanches, heavy snowfall, and landslides. The new centre marks a restructuring of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with weather services for these regions shifting from the Delhi Regional Meteorological Centre to Jammu. The Minister also announced that a new Regional Meteorological Centre will be established in Lucknow. Under Mission Mausam, five additional Doppler Weather Radars have been proposed for Anantnag, Rajouri, Baramulla, Kishtwar, and Doda. The region currently has 56 observatories, including 15 manual observatories, 25 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), and 16 Automatic Rain Gauges (ARG). Four Doppler Weather Radars are operational at Jammu, Srinagar, Leh, and Banihal.

NESTS–Bihar MoU for EMRS Strengthening

The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), functioning under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bihar Mahadalit Vikas Mission under the SC & ST Welfare Department, Government of Bihar on 5 June 2026 to strengthen the implementation of the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) Scheme in Bihar. NESTS is responsible for establishing and managing EMRSs across India to provide quality education and holistic development for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students. The MoU was signed in the presence of Ranjana Chopra, Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Dr. Pratima, Commissioner, NESTS, and Priyanka Rani, Director, SC & ST Welfare Department, Bihar. Under the agreement, coordinated planning, operation and monitoring of EMRSs in Bihar will be ensured, infrastructure projects will be completed on time, and financial assistance of ₹1.47 lakh per student will be provided. Recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff will be conducted through a centralized process, and a common academic framework based on the NCERT curriculum and CBSE standards will be followed.

L&T Signs ₹18,600 Crore Investment MoU in Tamil Nadu

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 4 June in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay for three projects to be implemented by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) with a total investment of ₹18,600 crore, generating employment for 8,200 people in the state. The MoU was signed following discussions between S.N. Subrahmanyan, Chairman and Managing Director of L&T, and the Chief Minister. The projects include a Data Center Expansion Project in Kanchipuram District with an investment of ₹15,000 crore creating 500 jobs, an Electronics Goods and Electronic Systems Manufacturing Project in Coimbatore with an investment of ₹2,500 crore creating 2,000 jobs, and the L&T Kattupalli Shipyard Expansion Project in Tiruvallur District with an investment of ₹1,100 crore creating 5,700 jobs. The projects are expected to strengthen digital infrastructure, Artificial Intelligence (AI) operations, electronics manufacturing, and offshore wind power-related infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.

First Woman Secretary of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly

R. Shanthi assumed charge as the first woman Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly following the resignation of K. Srinivasan, who had served as Assembly Secretary since 2018 and received a three-year service extension after his retirement in 2023. Based on seniority, R. Shanthi, who was serving as Special Secretary, was appointed as Assembly Secretary by Governor R. V. Arlekar. As she is due to retire in July 2026, she has also been granted a one-year service extension. A native of Madurai, Shanthi joined the Legislative Assembly Secretariat in 1992 through the TNPSC examination as an Assistant and subsequently held various positions including Assistant Section Officer, Section Officer, Under Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, and Special Secretary. She also served as the Returning Officer for the recent Rajya Sabha elections.

India–Venezuela Long-Term Energy Cooperation

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez held discussions in New Delhi on 4 June and agreed to strengthen long-term cooperation between India and Venezuela, particularly in the energy sector. Delcy Rodríguez visited India on a five-day official visit accompanied by ministers handling Foreign Affairs, Economy, Finance, Science and Technology, Communication, and Transport. The discussions covered cooperation in energy, critical minerals, pharmaceutical production, agriculture, automobile manufacturing, and healthcare. India also raised the issue of USD 500 million in outstanding dues payable to ONGC by Venezuela. Discussions were held on cooperation in the mining sector, including gold, diamonds, and other minerals. Venezuela, a South American country with significant oil resources, was previously a major supplier of crude oil to India, with imports exceeding 4 lakh barrels per day before procurement was halted in 2020. Following the easing of United States sanctions on Venezuela, India has resumed crude oil imports from the country and has increased purchases in recent weeks.

UN Security Council Non-Permanent Members for 2027–28

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term through a secret ballot conducted among the 193-member UN General Assembly. The newly elected countries will assume their two-year term from 1 January 2027, replacing Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, whose terms end in 2026. Portugal secured 134 votes and Austria received 131 votes in the Western European and Others Group. Zimbabwe won 182 votes, while Kyrgyzstan secured 142 votes after four rounds of voting, marking its first-ever election to the UNSC. Trinidad and Tobago was elected from the Latin American and Caribbean group with 181 votes. The 15-member UN Security Council consists of five permanent members with veto power—United States, United Kingdom, China, France, and Russia—and ten non-permanent members. India, which served as a non-permanent member during 2021–22, has announced its candidature for the 2028–29 term.

India–UK Critical Minerals Observatory

The India–UK Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO) for Critical Minerals was officially launched on June 4 by G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, and Yvette Cooper, the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. The initiative strengthens India–UK cooperation in the field of critical minerals and supply chain resilience. The Observatory is intended to enhance India’s capabilities in critical mineral supply chain intelligence, support evidence-based policymaking, and advance the objectives of the National Critical Mineral Mission. The collaboration focuses on developing resilient, diversified, and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals required for clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and electric mobility.

ChatGPT Reaches 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

According to data released by Sensor Tower, ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, became the fastest application to reach 1 billion Monthly Active Users (MAUs) globally as of May 2026. India accounts for 20% of ChatGPT’s global monthly active users, with more than 200 million users. India's share of ChatGPT users increased from 11% in Q2 2024 and 13% in Q2 2025 to 20% in 2026. As of May 2026, ChatGPT's user base stood at 1,000 million, ahead of Gemini (472 million), DeepSeek (68 million), Meta AI (61 million), Claude (56 million), Grok (50 million), Perplexity (44 million), and Copilot (31 million). ChatGPT achieved the 1 billion user milestone in approximately three years.

First Sea Export of Millet Functional Foods to New Zealand

APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) facilitated India's first-ever sea shipment of botanical-infused ready-to-cook millet functional foods from Karnataka to New Zealand on June 3, 2026. The export consignment, comprising one metric tonne of value-added millet products, was shipped by M/s Infini Agrotek LLP, Bengaluru. The export order was secured through APEDA-supported trade promotion initiatives, including World Food India 2025, Indus Food 2025, and Gulfood 2026. The shipment was virtually flagged off by Abhishek Dev, IAS, Chairman of APEDA. The initiative highlights the growing global demand for value-added millet products and strengthens India's agri-food export ecosystem. Millets have emerged as an important component of India's agricultural export basket due to their nutritional value, climate resilience, and increasing international demand.

Second BRICS Culture Working Group Meeting

The Second BRICS Culture Working Group (CWG) Meeting commenced on 4 June 2026 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh with participation from BRICS member countries. The inaugural session was chaired by Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Delegates from Brazil, China, Indonesia, Iran, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates attended in person, while representatives from Ethiopia, Egypt, and the Russian Federation participated virtually. The meeting included discussions on “Creative Economy and People-to-People Cooperation: Innovation, Partnerships and the Way Forward” and “Copyright and Ethical AI in the Creative Economy: Advancing Best Practices.” The second session was moderated by Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). The meeting focuses on cultural cooperation among BRICS countries and continues on 5 June 2026.

University of Liverpool Approved for Bengaluru Campus

The Ministry of Education issued a Letter of Approval (LoA) on 4 June 2026 to the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, for establishing its branch campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The approval was handed over by Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), to Professor Richard Grose, Provost of the University of Liverpool Bengaluru campus, in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. The university had earlier received a Letter of Intent (LoI) on 26 May 2025 under the UGC (Setting up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023. The Bengaluru campus will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Business Management, Computer Science, Game Design, Finance, and Biomedical Sciences. Established in 1881, the University of Liverpool is a higher education institution from the United Kingdom.

Indian Boxers in World Boxing Rankings

Indian boxers secured notable positions in the World Boxing Rankings, with Indian women featuring in the Top 10 of nine weight categories and Indian men in the Top 10 of eight weight categories. In the women’s rankings, Jaismine Lamboria became World No. 1 in the 57 kg category, while Meenakshi secured World No. 1 in the 48 kg category. Priya Gangas moved to 3rd place in the 60 kg category, and Preeti ranked 3rd in the 48 kg category. Arundhati Choudhary (70 kg), Pooja Rani (80 kg), and Nupur (80+ kg) secured 2nd place in their respective categories. Nikhat Zareen (51 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) retained their positions. Indian-Origin Players in FIFA World Cup 2026

The 23rd FIFA World Cup will be held from 11 June to 19 July 2026 across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with 48 teams participating. Four players of Indian origin have been selected to represent foreign national teams in the tournament. Sarpreet Singh of New Zealand, whose parents are originally from Punjab, joined the national team in 2018 and became the first player of Indian origin to play in Germany’s Bundesliga with Bayern Munich in 2019. Samuel Moutoussamy of DR Congo, born in France to a father of Tamil origin, has represented the national team since 2019. Nishan Velupillay of Australia, born in Melbourne to an Anglo-Indian mother and a father of Sri Lankan Tamil origin, has represented Australia since 2024. Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid of Qatar, born to Malayali parents from Kannur, Kerala, became the first player of Indian origin to play in the Qatar Stars League and made his international debut in 2024. Another Indian-origin player, Niall Mason, was included in Qatar’s preliminary squad but did not make the final team. The first player of Indian origin to play in a FIFA World Cup was Vikash Dhorasoo, who represented France in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where France finished as runners-up.

French Open Mixed Doubles Title Retained

Italy's Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained the French Open Mixed Doubles title by defeating Evan King of the United States and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada in the final with a score of 4-6, 6-3, [10-4]. The Italian pair became the first team since Ivan Dodig and Latisha Chan (2018 and 2019) to successfully defend the French Open mixed doubles crown. J&K Bank won the Gold Award at the Finacle Innovation Awards 2026 for its Data Insights and Analytics Platform. The award was presented in the category “Modern Technologies-led Innovation – Data Insights and Analytics Platform” at an event organized by Infosys Finacle in Mumbai. The award was received by Amitava Chatterjee, Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of J&K Bank, along with Mohammad Muzaffar Wani, General Manager (Strategy and Information Technology/CIO).

Neelkanth Mishra Appointed to World Bank

The Government of India appointed Neelkanth Mishra as India’s Executive Director (ED) at the World Bank Group in June 2026, succeeding Parameswaran Iyer, whose tenure of more than three years is ending. The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and will be valid for three years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The position of Executive Director for India at the World Bank also represents Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. Neelkanth Mishra is a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) and currently serves as Chief Economist of Axis Bank and Head of Global Research at Axis Capital. He has previously served as part-time Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and part-time member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

National e-Governance Awards 2026

The National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2026 have been announced by the Union Government, with 16 projects selected for recognition. Among them, 10 projects will receive Gold Awards and 6 projects will receive Silver Awards. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held on July 2, 2026. Major award-winning initiatives include the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agri Stack, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs’ e-Jagriti platform, and the Prayagraj Mela Authority’s Mahakumbh 2025 project. Agri Stack provides farmers with finance-related information and disaster early warning data, while e-Jagriti enables consumers to register complaints related to insurance, banking, housing, electricity, finance, healthcare, and automobiles. Other award-winning initiatives include the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council’s Blood Bag Traceability and Citizen Interaction Portal, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s AI-enabled Clinical Decision Support System under eSanjeevani, and the Kerala High Court’s District Court Case Management System. The awards are presented under seven categories to recognize excellence in e-governance and digital service delivery.

Subhash C. Kashyap Passes Away

Subhash C. Kashyap, former Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, constitutional expert, and author, passed away on 4 June 2026 at the age of 97. Born on 10 May 1929, he authored important books including “Our Constitution: An Introduction to India's Constitution and Constitutional Law” and “Constitution of India: A Handbook for Students”. During the tenure of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he served as a member of the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution and Chairman of its Drafting and Editorial Committee. He was also the Honorary Constitutional Advisor to the Government of India on Panchayati Raj Laws and Institutions in the early 1990s. Under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he was a member of the high-level committee on One Nation, One Election chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind. He served as Secretary General of the 7th, 8th, and 9th Lok Sabha and held the post from 1984 to 1990. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan by then President Pranab Mukherjee. He also received the Motilal Nehru Award (twice), Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship (1996–98), Vidur Samman, Rajiv Smriti Samman, and Vidhi Seva Samman.

Former CBFC Chairman Pahlaj Nihalani Passes Away

Pahlaj Nihalani (76), former Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and veteran Hindi film producer, passed away on June 4, 2026 due to liver-related ailments. He served as CBFC Chairman from January 19, 2015, to August 11, 2017. Nihalani made his debut as a producer with Haathkadi (1982) and produced several successful Hindi films, including Ilzaam (1986), Aag Hi Aag (1987), Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), and Aankhen (1993). He is credited with introducing actors Govinda, Chunky Panday, and Divya Bharti to Hindi cinema. Before heading the CBFC, he served as President of the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers for 29 years. During his CBFC tenure, he was associated with the controversy over suggested cuts in the film Udta Punjab.

Marjane Satrapi Passes Away

Marjane Satrapi (56), the renowned Iranian-French cartoonist, filmmaker, and author of Persepolis, passed away in Paris. She was known for her works on Iranian society and women's rights. Her autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis, based on the Iranian Islamic Revolution, was adapted into a film that won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival (2007), received the César Award for Best Adapted Screenplay (2008), and was nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar). Her other notable works include Broderies (Embroideries) and Chicken with Plums. As a filmmaker, she directed Radioactive, a biographical film on Marie Curie. In 2023, she coordinated the book Femme, vie, liberté (Woman, Life, Freedom), which documented the protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.

Global Business Research Conference 2026

The Global Business Research Conference (GBRC) 2026 was inaugurated on 4 June 2026 at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi, by Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. The conference was organised under the theme “Managing Business Amidst Worldwide Turbulence” and brought together academicians, policymakers, researchers, management educators, and industry experts from India and abroad. Prof. Rakesh Mohan Joshi, Vice-Chancellor of IIFT, participated in the event. The conference included Directors’ Conclaves focusing on internationalisation strategies for business schools, the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in management education, and the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education. Research discussions covered finance, marketing, global trade, supply chain management, and public policy. MY Bharat Sets Guinness World Record

Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), a youth engagement platform under the Department of Youth Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, received a Guinness World Record for the “Most Users to Take an Online Quiz in One Week.” During the official assessment period, 390,812 participants successfully completed the online quiz. The record was achieved through the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders' Dialogue (VBYLD) Quiz, conducted to promote awareness of Viksit Bharat@2047. More than 50.42 lakh youth from 28 States and 8 Union Territories participated through the MY Bharat portal. The Guinness World Records certificate was presented by Rishinath, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, at Shram Shakti Bhawan, New Delhi, on 4 June 2026. The event was attended by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Minister of State, and Dr. Pallavi Jain Govil, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs. The MY Bharat platform has recorded 2.19 crore registrations within three years.

India’s 100th Ramsar Site

On 5 June 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the designation of Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, as India’s 100th Ramsar Site. The sanctuary is a wetland known for its rich avian biodiversity and supports numerous migratory and resident bird species. The recognition marks a significant milestone in India’s wetland conservation efforts and highlights the importance of Ramsar Sites in biodiversity conservation and ecological protection.

Panchayat Advancement Index Wins National e-Governance Award 2026

The Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI), a flagship data-driven governance initiative of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, has been selected for the Gold Award at the National Awards for e-Governance (NAeG) 2026 under Category VII – Digital Transformation through the Use of Data Analytics in Digital Platforms by Central Ministries, States and Union Territories. The award will be presented during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance to be held on 1–2 July 2026 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The conference is being organised by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in association with the Government of Rajasthan. The theme of the conference is “Viksit Bharat 2047: AI-Enabled, Data-Driven and Secure Digital Governance.” The PAI is India’s first comprehensive data-driven framework for assessing and ranking Gram Panchayats across the nine themes of the Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs). The latest version, PAI 2.0, evaluates more than 2.6 lakh Gram Panchayats using 150 indicators and 230 data points, and classifies them into five performance categories based on composite scores.

Manali Records Highest Ozone Level in India

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Manali, Chennai, recorded the highest ground-level ozone concentration in India during May 2026, with 500 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³) recorded on May 19. Another monitoring station in Manali recorded 361 µg/m³ on May 3. The National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone is an 8-hour average of 100 µg/m³, and Manali exceeded this standard on 24 days during May 2026. The industrial region of Manali contains petrochemical plants, oil refineries, fertiliser units, and thermal power stations. Despite high ozone levels, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Manali improved from 118.9 in 2018 to 64 in 2026, according to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) data. Among the 19 highly polluting industries in the area, 15 industries have shifted to cleaner fuels.

Oxford Study on Heat Risk in Indian Cities

According to a recent study by the University of Oxford, 14 Indian cities have been included among the world's top 50 cities facing high heat risk. The study, published in the journal Sustainable Cities and Societies, assessed 205 global cities based on hazard exposure, vulnerability, and coping capacity. Ahmedabad (0.79), Nagpur (0.76), and Madurai (0.73) were identified as the leading Indian cities and were placed among the top 10 high-risk cities. Other Indian cities listed include Bhopal, Patna, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. The study noted that more than 95% of high-risk cities are located in South and Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. Al Basrah (Iraq) was identified as the city with the highest heat risk globally.

FY26 GDP Growth Projections by Economists

According to estimates by leading economists and financial institutions, India’s GDP growth for FY2025-26 (FY26) is expected to remain above 7%, with projections ranging between 7.2% and 7.5%. The State Bank of India (SBI) projected Q4 FY26 GDP growth at 7.2% and full-year growth at 7.5%, while forecasting 6.6% growth for FY2026-27 (FY27). ICRA estimated Q4 FY26 growth at 7%, citing slower manufacturing activity and lower exports. YES Bank Chief Economist Indranil Pan projected FY26 growth at 7.5%. L&T Finance Chief Economist Rajni Thakur estimated Q4 growth at 7.2–7.3%. Bank of Baroda also projected Q4 GDP growth at 7.2–7.3% and indicated that the impact of the West Asia crisis may become more visible in FY27.

Yellow-Throated Marten Recorded in Kaziranga

The Yellow-Throated Marten (Martes flavigula) was recorded for the first time in the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve in Assam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 1,302 sq km. The species was photographed during routine camera-trap monitoring conducted by the Kaziranga Tiger Cell on 2 June 2026, confirming its presence in the park’s semi-evergreen forest areas. The Yellow-Throated Marten is a mesopredator, a small carnivorous species that occupies a position below apex predators in the food chain. In India, it is found in the Himalayan region and other parts of Northeast India, including Assam. The species is protected under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act. The sighting was announced by officials of the Assam Forest Department.
