Joseph Vijay Sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

At a ceremony held at Nehru Indoor Stadium, Chennai, Joseph Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu before Governor R.V. Arlekar. Along with him, 9 ministers, including Nithin Anand and Aadhav Arjuna, were sworn in. In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election held on 23 April, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won 108 seats and emerged as the single largest party. To form the government, the party secured support from Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), taking total support to 120 MLAs. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi and film personalities. After assuming office, the Chief Minister signed files related to 200 units of free electricity for eligible consumers using up to 500 units in two months and the ‘Singapen’ bus service scheme for women.

Three Key Government Orders Signed

After assuming office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Joseph Vijay signed three major government order files related to welfare and law enforcement. The first order provides 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers using up to 500 units in two months. The second order establishes the ‘Singappen Special Strike Force’ across Tamil Nadu to improve women’s safety with adequate personnel and modern facilities for faster action on complaints. The third order creates an Anti-Narcotic Task Force to prevent drug-related crimes in the state. The force will include units in all 37 districts and 28 police districts in 9 corporations, totaling 65 Anti-Narcotic Task Force units. The files were signed after Governor R.V. Arlekar administered the oath of office to Joseph Vijay and the newly appointed ministers.

M.V. Karuppaiya Appointed Pro-tem Speaker

M.V. Karuppaiya, MLA from Sholavandan constituency, was appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Governor R.V. Arlekar administered the oath of office to him at Raj Bhavan. The first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly is scheduled to be held at 9:30 AM, during which all newly elected MLAs, including Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, will take oath before the Pro-tem Speaker. The Assembly Secretariat, headed by Secretary K. Srinivasan, instructed members to bring their election victory certificates. In the Assembly election, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won 108 seats and formed the government with the support of 13 MLAs from Congress, CPI, CPM, IUML, and VCK. The election for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly is scheduled to take place the following day.

IAS Officers Appointed as Secretaries to Chief Minister

IAS officers P. Senthilkumar and G. Lakshmi Priya have been appointed as Secretaries to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. P. Senthilkumar, who served as the Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister. G. Lakshmi Priya, who served as the Secretary of the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department, has been appointed as the Second Secretary to the Chief Minister. The appointment orders were issued by Chief Secretary M. Saikumar through a government order. Both officers assumed charge immediately after Joseph Vijay took oath as Chief Minister. The government order stated that they would continue in their posts for one year or until further requirement.

Udhayanidhi Stalin Elected Leader of Opposition

Former Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been elected as the DMK Legislature Party Leader at a meeting of DMK MLAs held on May 7 at Anna Arivalayam, Chennai. As the leader of the second-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, he will serve as the Leader of the Opposition. Udhayanidhi Stalin was re-elected from the Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni constituency for a second term. Senior DMK leader K.N. Nehru has been appointed as the Deputy Leader of the DMK Legislature Party, while former minister E.V. Velu has been appointed as the party whip. The Assembly is expected to witness political proceedings involving Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Udhayanidhi Stalin.

Himanta Biswa Sarma Re-Elected as Assam Chief Minister

Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for the second time after being elected as the leader of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) legislative party in Guwahati. In the Assam Assembly Election, the NDA won 102 seats out of the total 126 seats, enabling the alliance to form the government for the third consecutive term. After the legislative party meeting, Himanta Biswa Sarma met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and staked claim to form the government. The Governor invited him to form the new government. Union Minister J.P. Nadda participated in the NDA MLAs’ meeting where Sarma was chosen as the legislative party leader.

Fastest Half-Century Record in IPL

In the Indian Premier League (IPL) match held at Chepauk, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player Urvil Patel scored a half-century in 13 balls against Lucknow Super Giants. With this achievement, Urvil Patel equalled the record for the fastest half-century in IPL history. He now shares the record with Yashasvi Jaiswal of Rajasthan Royals, who scored a 13-ball half-century against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in 2023.

India Wins Gold at Archery World Cup

At the Archery World Cup Stage 2 held in Shanghai, China, the Indian women’s recurve team comprising Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Kumkum Mohod won the gold medal. In the final match against China, both teams were tied at 4-4, following which a shoot-off was conducted. India won the shoot-off by 5-4 and secured the gold medal.

India Wins Bronze in Shotgun World Cup

At the Shotgun World Cup held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, the Indian pair of Neeru Dhanda and Vivaan Kapoor won the bronze medal in the Trap Mixed Team event. The duo secured 24 points by hitting 24 out of 30 targets and finished in third place. Earlier, they qualified for the final by securing second place with 143 points in the qualification round. Another Indian pair, Anwar Rizvi and Pragati Dubey, finished 23rd with 130 points and were eliminated in the qualification stage. The Chinese Taipei pair Kun Pi-yang and Wan Yu-liu won the gold medal with a world record score of 36 points, while Italy won the silver medal. India finished the tournament in 10th place with one bronze medal.

Sreeshankar Wins Gold in Indian Athletics Series

At the Indian Athletics Series-6 held at Nehru Stadium, Chennai, Murali Sreeshankar from Kerala won the gold medal in the long jump event with a jump of 8.04 metres. He had already achieved the qualification standards for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. P. David secured second place with 7.77 metres. In the 110 metres hurdles, national record holder Tejas Shirse clocked 13.43 seconds, while M. Krishik recorded 13.44 seconds, and both achieved the qualification mark for the Asian Games. In the men’s high jump event, Adarsh Ram from Tamil Nadu cleared 2.27 metres to win the gold medal. He also attempted 2.30 metres to break Tejaswin Shankar’s national record of 2.29 metres, but was unsuccessful.

India’s First MITRA Textile Park Inaugurated

Under the Central Government’s MITRA Scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first Textile Park at Warangal, Telangana. The park was constructed at a cost of ₹1,695 crore over an area of 1,327 acres. The Central Government has approved textile park projects in seven states, including Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka. According to the Union Ministry of Textiles, the textile park is expected to attract ₹6,000 crore investments and generate more than 24,400 employment opportunities.

India-Sri Lanka Reconstruction Agreement after Cyclone Ditwa

Following the damage caused by Cyclone Ditwa in Sri Lanka, India and Sri Lanka decided to expedite reconstruction and rehabilitation works at a cost of 450 million US dollars (approximately ₹4,500 crore). The cyclone, which struck in November last year, affected more than 30 lakh people and caused over 640 deaths due to rain, floods, and landslides. The Government of India launched ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ to assist Sri Lanka and announced financial support for reconstruction activities. In Colombo, Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha met Sri Lankan Labour Minister and State Finance Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando to discuss reconstruction works and bilateral development projects. India is also supporting projects related to housing, healthcare, drinking water, infrastructure, and technology in Sri Lanka.

India–Trinidad and Tobago Sign 8 MoUs

During the visit of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Trinidad and Tobago, India and Trinidad and Tobago signed 8 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in various sectors. The visit was part of Jaishankar’s nine-day tour to the Caribbean nations of Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. During the two-day visit, Jaishankar met Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and discussed bilateral cooperation. The agreements included cooperation in the tourism sector and infrastructure development of Nelson Island, where Indian indentured labourers first stayed after arriving from India. Both countries also discussed expanding cooperation in infrastructure, security, forensics, and medicine, and identifying descendants of Indian indentured labourers sent by the British to Fiji, South Africa, Mauritius, and Caribbean islands during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Indian-Origin Transgender Person Elected to Scottish Parliament

Q. Manivannan, an Indian-origin transgender person from Tamil Nadu, has been elected as a member of the Scottish Parliament from the Edinburgh and Lothians region. Manivannan contested the election on behalf of the Scottish Greens Party. The election was held after restrictions preventing people with short-term visas and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from contesting in Scottish Parliamentary elections were removed. Manivannan has previously worked as a teacher, policy expert, with the United Nations (UN), and in human rights groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Evacuation Operation after Hantavirus Outbreak

Following a Hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius, evacuation operations began from the Canary Islands, Spain. The ship, which departed from Argentina in April, reported the deaths of three passengers, while several others were affected by the disease. Hantavirus is generally spread through rodents and currently has no vaccine or specific treatment. Around 150 passengers and crew members were evacuated from the ship through Granadilla Port in Tenerife and transported to Tenerife South Airport under medical safety measures. Spanish Health Minister Monica Garcia stated that all passengers were asymptomatic during evacuation. World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the evacuation operation was progressing successfully. Health officials also clarified that the risk to global public health remains low.

Private Sector Capex Growth in India

According to data released by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), India’s private sector capital expenditure (Capex) increased by 67% in September 2025 compared to September 2024, reaching ₹7.7 lakh crore. The manufacturing sector invested nearly ₹3.8 lakh crore, mainly in metals, automobiles, and chemicals, while the services sector invested ₹3.1 lakh crore in areas such as trade, communications, and IT/ITeS. CII Director-General Chandrajit Banerjee stated that the data reflected a strong investment cycle in India. Earlier, Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) V. Anantha Nageswaran had expressed concern over lower private sector capital formation despite corporate profit growth of 30.8%. To support the economy during the West Asia crisis, CII recommended measures including reduction in fuel and power consumption, ensuring 45-day payment support for MSMEs, strengthening supply chains, promoting import substitution, and expanding internships under the PM Internship Scheme.
