Statehood Days of November 1
📜 States Observing Statehood / Formation Day on November 1:
Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu.
November 1 is linked to the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which redrew India’s internal boundaries to bring together people sharing common languages and cultural identities.
On November 1, 1956, Kerala was officially formed by merging the Travancore-Cochin State, the Malabar District from the Madras State, and the Kasaragod region. This unification of Malayalam-speaking regions is celebrated as Kerala Piravi Day, symbolising the birth of modern Kerala.
The same day saw the creation of Mysore State (now Karnataka) by merging Kannada-speaking regions from Bombay, Madras, and Hyderabad States with the princely state of Mysore. Later renamed Karnataka in 1973, the state celebrates Karnataka Rajyotsava every November 1.
Madhya Pradesh was also reorganised on this day in 1956 through the merger of Madhya Bharat, Vindhya Pradesh, and Bhopal States with the Central Provinces, forming one of India’s largest Hindi-speaking states. Similarly, Punjab was restructured with the merger of the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU).
In 1966, Punjab underwent another division, leading to the creation of Haryana, a separate state for Hindi-speaking people, while Himachal Pradesh received additional territories and later attained full statehood on November 1, 1971.
The new millennium renewed the importance of this date: in 2000, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh to promote regional development, and Uttarakhand (then Uttaranchal) was created from Uttar Pradesh to meet the unique developmental needs of its Himalayan region.
Tamil Nadu too marks its connection with this date. On November 1, 1969, the state formerly known as Madras State was officially renamed Tamil Nadu, meaning “Land of the Tamils,” reflecting its linguistic pride and cultural identity.

Tamil Nadu Launches Decarbonisation Plans for Four Districts to Achieve Net-Zero Emissions
In a major step towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions, the Tamil Nadu government has launched District Decarbonisation Action Plans (DDAPs) for The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar districts. Alongside these plans, a State Climate Action Tracker was also introduced to monitor the state’s climate goals in real-time.
The initiative, led by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company under the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, was developed in collaboration with Vasudha Foundation, a climate think tank. The launch was formally made by Environment Minister Thangam Thennarasu in Chennai.
The four pilot districts contribute over 10% of Tamil Nadu’s GDP, representing diverse ecological and economic zones—from Coimbatore’s industries to Nilgiris’ Western Ghats and Ramanathapuram’s coastal ecosystems. Studies show that up to 92% of projected emissions by 2050 can be reduced through clean energy, industrial efficiency, and nature-based solutions. Additionally, 2.97 million tonnes of CO₂ can be absorbed through forest restoration, agroforestry, and coastal ecosystem rejuvenation.

India, US Sign 10-Year Defense Cooperation Pact to Boost Indo-Pacific Security
In a significant step toward strengthening strategic defense ties, India and the United States have signed a 10-year Defense Cooperation Agreement aimed at enhancing military collaboration and regional security in the Indo-Pacific region. The pact was signed following discussions between India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defense Secretary Peter Cook in Kuala Lumpur, where Rajnath is attending the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) on November 1.
The agreement is expected to mark a new chapter in bilateral defense relations, focusing on joint exercises, technology sharing, and logistical support. It also comes at a time when both countries are keen to deepen cooperation amid global geopolitical shifts.
Relations between the two nations had recently faced tension after the US imposed a 50% additional tariff on India over imports of Russian crude oil. The new defense pact is seen as a confidence-building measure to restore mutual trust and collaboration.
Rajnath Singh posted on X that the agreement “will further strengthen India-US defense cooperation and play a vital role in ensuring a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific region.”
This new deal follows a series of key defense pacts signed over the past decade:
2015: The US designated India as a “Major Defense Partner,” promoting the exchange of military technologies.
2016 – LEMOA: Enabled mutual access for logistics, maintenance, and supplies at military bases.
2018 – COMCASA: Strengthened secure communications and interoperability between the two forces.
2020 – BECA: Facilitated sharing of advanced geospatial and satellite data for defense planning and precision targeting.
Together, these agreements — capped by the latest 10-year pact — reinforce India’s position as a key strategic ally in maintaining stability and balance across the Indo-Pacific.
