New 8th Pay Commission Formed to Revise Pay Structures
On October 28, 2025, the Central Government approved the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.
This decision was made during a Union Cabinet meeting in Delhi, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The primary objective of the 8th Pay Commission is to revise the pay, dearness allowance, pension, and other monetary benefits for central government employees based on the cost of living and inflation.
The Commission's recommendations, expected to benefit 50 lakh central government employees and 69 lakh pensioners, are likely to be implemented from January 1, 2026.
The government regularly forms Pay Commissions to adjust salaries in response to inflation and the rising cost of living. Based on the 8th Pay Commission's recommendations, the government will revise salaries and increase dearness allowance every six months. The Commission, with retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai at its helm, will submit its final recommendations within 18 months, with an interim report expected before that.
Professor Bhuvanesh Kosh from IIM Bengaluru has been appointed as a part-time member, and Union Petroleum Secretary Pankaj Jain will serve as the member-secretary.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that once the interim report is received, a specific date for implementing the recommendations will be set, with the likely implementation starting January 1, 2026.
Ranjana Prakash Desai, who currently serves as the Chairperson of the Press Council of India, has previously headed several significant committees, including the Delimitation Commission for Jammu and Kashmir and the expert committee that drafted the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Uttarakhand.
