Chennai High Court Chief Justice Sworn in Today

M.M. Srivastava was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court at the Raj Bhavan on Monday (July 21). Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to him.

The appointments followed a transfer where K.R. Sriram, who was the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, and M.M. Srivastava, who was the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, was transferred as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

₹53,340 Crore Crop Loan for Farmers in 4 Years

The state government has announced that crop loans amounting to ₹53,340 crore have been provided to farmers through cooperative societies in Tamil Nadu over the past four years.

The cooperative department serves the poor and vulnerable sections of society and, through cooperative institutions, the government provides loan assistance to the people. During times of public hardship, it also helps by waiving loans.

As per the election promise, the Chief Minister ordered the waiver of jewel loans up to 5 sovereigns obtained from cooperative institutions. Accordingly, loans worth ₹4,904 crore for 11.70 lakh beneficiaries were waived, and their pawned jewels were returned.

Similarly, loans worth ₹2,118.80 crore for women’s self-help groups provided through cooperative institutions were waived, benefiting 10,56,816 members from 1,01,963 women’s self-help groups.

Furthermore, the loan limit for women’s self-help groups was raised from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh, and loans amounting to ₹10,997.07 crore have been provided to 1,90,499 self-help groups.

24 Crore Indians Emerged from Poverty

NITI Aayog Vice-Chairperson Suman Bery stated that 24 crore (240 million) Indians have emerged from poverty in the last ten years.

Speaking at an event recently organized by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in New York City, he said: In the 10-year period from 2013-14 to 2022-23, 24 crore Indians have come out of multidimensional poverty.

India is moving towards achieving its health goals of preventing maternal mortality, infant mortality, and child mortality.

He stated that India’s progress has been made possible by a dual strategy of having strong safety nets to protect the most vulnerable people and implementing growth-promoting reforms.

Prime Minister Modi on a 4-Day Tour to Britain, Maldives from July 23

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is embarking on a four-day tour to Britain and the Maldives. He departs on Tuesday (July 23).

During his visit, he will hold discussions with the leaders of these countries on enhancing bilateral relations in sectors including trade, investment, and defense.

A press release from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated: ‘Prime Minister Modi will be on a tour to Britain on July 23 and 24. At that time, Prime Minister Modi will hold discussions with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on improving cooperation in regional and international affairs, trade, economy, technology, new innovations, security, climate, health, and education.’

He is also expected to meet with British King Charles during his tour. Following this, Prime Minister Modi will tour the Maldives on July 25 and 26. He will participate in the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives on July 26.

During his trip, Prime Minister Modi will hold various discussions with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu.

It was mentioned that India’s assistance with public infrastructure and maritime security agreements, which were signed during Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India last year, was of great help.

Murugappa Gold Cup Hockey: Railways are the Champions

The Railways team won the championship title in the All India MCC Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament.

In the final match held on Sunday at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in Egmore, Chennai, the strong teams of Railways and the Indian Navy clashed. In this match, the Railways team defeated the Navy team by a score of 3-1.

For Railways, Ajit, Pankaj Rawat, and Sayanth Tyagi scored goals. For the Navy, Aqeeb Rahm scored a goal. Railways player Gursahibjit Singh was selected as the Man of the Final.

World University Swimming: Srihari Natraj Sets a Record

India’s Srihari Natraj set a new national record in swimming, which was held as part of the World University Games.

The World University Games are being held in the city of Berlin, Germany. As part of this, Srihari Natraj set a new Indian record in the men’s 100m freestyle event by completing the distance in 49.46 seconds. With this, he broke Virdhawal Khade’s record of 49.47 seconds, which was set in 2008.

Srihari has also qualified for the semi-finals. On Friday, he also set the best Indian time in the 200m freestyle event.

Justice Yashwant Varma Impeachment Motion: Over 100 MPs Sign

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that more than 100 Lok Sabha members have already signed the motion notice for the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma.

It is noteworthy that a minimum of 100 MPs’ signatures are required to introduce this motion in the Lok Sabha.

When Yashwant Varma was a judge of the Delhi High Court, a fire broke out on March 14 at his official residence in New Delhi. At that time, bundles of cash were discovered in a half-burnt bag in a room of the house.

Article 124 of the Indian Constitution This article deals with the establishment and constitution of the Supreme Court. Clause (4) of this article specifically lays down the procedure for the removal (impeachment) of a Supreme Court judge.

A Judge of the Supreme Court shall not be removed from his office except by an order of the President passed after an address by each House of Parliament supported by a majority of the total membership of that House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members of that House present and voting has been presented to the President in the same session for such removal on the ground of proved misbehaviour or incapacity.

Article 218 of the Indian Constitution The provisions of clauses (4) and (5) of article 124 shall apply in relation to a High Court as they apply in relation to the Supreme Court with the substitution of references to the High Court for references to the Supreme Court.
