® The Tamil translation of renowned ecologist Prof. Madhav Gadgil’s autobiography, A Walk Up the Hill: Living with People and Nature, was launched in Chennai. ® The original book, published in 2023, is a memoir based on Prof. Gadgil’s experiences during field surveys in biodiversity hotspots, including the Western Ghats. ® Prof. Gadgil recalled his association with Tamil Nadu since 1973, beginning with his work in the Nilgiris and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve

Toda Language and

Culture Revitalisation Project in Nilgiris

® A project for the revitalisation of the Toda language in prose, song, and cultural ecology was conducted in the Nilgiris, involving 20+ members of the Toda tribal community. ® The initiative focused on traditional dress, rituals, and the preservation of indigenous cultural practices. ® Organised under Tamil Nadu’s Tholkudi Scheme by the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department. ® Supported by Dr. Tarun Chhabra, founder of the Nilgiris Kuttawady Center. ® Aims to safeguard the cultural heritage of indigenous communities in Tamil Nadu.

Scientist Awards Announced for 2022 & 2023

® The Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology announced the Tamil Nadu Scientist Awards for the years 2022 and 2023. ® 12 scientists were selected—one from each discipline—by the advisory committee. ® Disciplines include: Agriculture, Biology, Chemical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Sciences. ® The award recognizes excellence in scientific research and innovation across sectors.

Completes Six Years of Gender Clinics Initiative

® Tamil Nadu became the second state after Kerala to establish exclusive gender clinics in 2019, starting at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), Chennai. ® Later expanded to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai, offering free gender affirmation surgeries. ® As of 2024, 171 gender affirmation surgeries performed for transmen and transwomen. ® Currently, 12 clinics operate across districts including Salem, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Vellore, Thanjavur, and others. ® Eligibility: Trans individuals aged 18 and above. ® The initiative supports transgender healthcare rights and inclusion.
