World Malaria Day 2024

World Malaria Day is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control. It was instituted by WHO Member States during the World Health Assembly of 2007. Theme: “Accelerate the fight against malaria for a more equitable world” Malaria is a deadly disease caused by mosquito bites which is quite common in tropical and subtropical countries. Malaria is transmitted to humans by female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax – pose the greatest threat. The common symptoms of Malaria are shaking, chills and high fever. Quinine which is obtained from bark of cinchona is used to treat malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum.

Laboratory Animals 2024 - April 24

Since 1979, the day has been advocating for the cessation of animal testing in laboratories worldwide, replacing it with more advanced non-animal scientific techniques. April 24 was selected as it honours the birthday of Hugh Dowding, a staunch anti-vivisectionist and former president of NAVS (National Anti-Vivisection Society )
