El Niño Impacts on India: Scientists Issue Warning

188 Indian scientists and ecologists have jointly appealed to researchers and field practitioners to prepare for the impacts of El Niño, a global weather phenomenon associated with reduced monsoon rainfall and extreme heat and dry conditions. In the Pacific Ocean, where El Niño originates, temperatures have risen above the 0.5°C threshold, reaching 2.6°C in August, while reconstructions based on coral cores indicate that anomalies could reach 4°C, potentially exceeding levels recorded during the past 1,000 years. El Niño began in May, with its major impacts on the Northern Hemisphere, including India, expected from November into the following year, with the possibility of a “Super El Niño.” The anticipated impacts include coral bleaching and mortality, increased wildfires, rainforest tree mortality, drought, extreme heat, delayed fruit production and changes in animal behaviour, affecting farmers, fishers and shepherds. Jayashree Ratnam, Scientist at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, noted that large trees in the Western Ghats are vulnerable to heat and prolonged drought, while urban trees face additional stress from the urban heat island effect. Rohan Arthur, Marine Biologist at the Nature Conservation Foundation, stated that coral recovery after major die-backs can take at least 10 years, with the last major El Niño occurring in 2024. Roxy Mathew Koll, Climate Scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, highlighted possible cascading impacts through reduced soil moisture, land and marine heatwaves, crop stress, forest fires and coral bleaching.
