Sparrow Conservation Initiative in Government Schools

Koodugal Trust, a voluntary organisation working for sparrow conservation, will conduct environment awareness and nest-box-making workshops in 50 government schools across 10 districts of Tamil Nadu from September 2026, in partnership with the School Education Department. The programme will focus on sparrow habitats, urban challenges and the creation of safe nesting spaces. The workshops will be conducted in districts including Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Ranipet and Krishnagiri. The Trust has previously conducted awareness programmes in about 80 private schools over five years and has distributed around 15,000 nest boxes across Tamil Nadu during the same period. According to the organisation's local assessment, the house sparrow population in North Chennai increased by 25% over the past five years. Students will also be encouraged to participate in a sparrow census, and the Trust plans to introduce a mobile application for recording bird calls, images and sightings to help collect data on sparrow populations.

CAG Audit on Green India Mission

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has identified shortcomings in the implementation of the Green India Mission (GIM), one of the eight missions under the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC), launched in 2014 to protect, restore and enhance India’s forest cover. For 2015–16 to 2024–25, against the target of improving forest quality over 1.4 million hectares, only 0.11384 million hectares was achieved, resulting in a 91.87% shortfall, while the target for increasing forest cover recorded a 97.57% shortfall. The audit also identified inadequate coordination with CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) and MGNREGS (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme). Against the proposed funding of ₹10,600 crore, only ₹1,149.14 crore (47.88%) was received out of the ₹2,000 crore approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs during the 10-year period examined. The audit further found that eight States and Union Territories did not maintain annual accounts properly, while several other accounts contained discrepancies or remained unaudited.

Reactor 1 was commissioned on October 22, 2013, while Reactor 2 began commercial power generation on October 15, 2016. Reactor 2 recently set a new station record for continuous operation by surpassing the previous 638-day record held by Reactor 1. In the construction of Units 3–6, Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) was successfully installed in the reactor building of Unit 5, while Unit 3 achieved the commissioning milestone of ‘Spillage to Open Reactor’. Under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, KKNPP has spent ₹155.33 crore on infrastructure development in villages surrounding the plant.

H1N1 Influenza Cases Reported Earlier Than Usual in Chennai

H1N1 influenza cases have been reported at several hospitals in Chennai earlier than the usual seasonal period, with cases being observed during the preceding one-and-a-half months and an increase in Influenza A cases. Symptoms reported among patients include fever, headache, body ache, back pain, fatigue and, in some cases, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea. MGM Healthcare noted that H1N1 is an endemic infection and can occur at different times of the year. Increased Influenza A cases have also been observed among children during the preceding two weeks at Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital. A government doctor reported that limited testing facilities had made confirmation of H1N1 difficult in some patients with flu-like symptoms. Government Stanley Medical College Hospital had reported mild H1N1 cases two to three weeks earlier, with an expected increase during the monsoon period. High-risk groups identified for annual vaccination include older adults, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions.

India’s Space Launch Cost and Private Launch Sector

A peer-reviewed study published in the Economics Letters journal estimated that in 2025, India’s cost to place one kilogram of payload into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) using Indian rockets was $13,302, compared with $9,897 for Europe, $6,682 for Russia, $5,809 for China, $5,287 for Japan, and $3,225 for the United States, while the global average was $3,868. The study was authored by Alessio Terzi of the University of Cambridge and Francesco Nicoli of Politecnico di Torino. Since the opening of India’s space sector to private participation in 2020, around 400 startups have been registered with IN-SPACe, the Indian space-sector regulator. In July 2026, Skyroot Aerospace, based in Hyderabad, launched India’s first privately built orbital rocket, making India the third country after the United States and China to have private orbital launch capability. In November 2024, NewSpace India launched the 4,700-kg GSAT-N2 communication satellite on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. In early 2025, Bengaluru-based Pixxel and Digantara launched private commercial satellites through a SpaceX rideshare, while GalaxEye booked Falcon 9 launch slots for 2026.

BCG Vaccine and Alzheimer’s Disease

A study by researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, USA, examined the potential role of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, a vaccine used against tuberculosis (TB), in developing immunity against Alzheimer’s disease. The study involved 23 older adults, who received two BCG doses one month apart. The researchers found that BCG activated genes associated with a faster immune response and demonstrated the concept of trained immunity, in which innate immune cells develop long-lasting enhanced responses. Among participants without established Alzheimer’s disease, amyloid-beta levels decreased in cerebrospinal fluid and increased in blood, suggesting increased clearance of amyloid from the brain, while this change was not observed in participants with established Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers Dr. Kodali and Soumen Basak were associated with the study, and larger clinical trials are required to further evaluate the potential of BCG as a preventive strategy against Alzheimer’s disease.

The Nataraja Hall at Thanjavur Palace houses 31 bronze idols, including Sivakami, the consort of Nataraja, dating from the 11th to 19th centuries and recovered from different parts of the erstwhile Thanjavur district. In 2024, a dedicated museum was established with support from the art gallery funds and CSR assistance from Saint-Gobain Glass to display different forms of Nataraja. The idols were made using the lost-wax casting technique. Notable exhibits include the Nataraja of Tirukollampudur, mentioned in the Thevaram hymns, the Oordhva Tandava form from Thanjavur, and Chola-period bronzes from Tiruvenkadu and Muthupet. Historian and epigraphist R. Nagaswamy, in his book Masterpieces of Chola Art, noted the use of gold, silver and copper in religious images and the later use of the five-metal alloy Panchaloha, consisting of copper, tin, lead, gold and silver. The inscriptions of Rajaraja I at the Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur, refer to images made of gold, silver and copper.

NGT Directs TNPCB to Fix Timeline for IIT-Madras Study

The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to issue Terms of Reference (ToR) to IIT-Madras and fix a timeline for a comprehensive scientific study on pollution in Neyveli. The order was issued on August 12 by a Bench comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Prashant Gargava while hearing two suo motu cases concerning alleged pollution around Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) India and mercury in water. A TNPCB technical committee had submitted separate reports, but differences among its members prevented a comprehensive report, following which TNPCB decided to entrust the study to IIT-Madras. An earlier NGT order dated July 15 recorded that mercury was detected in 6 of 19 surface water samples tested by the TNPCB laboratory, ranging from 0.01 mg/l to 0.027 mg/l, while private laboratory reports found mercury and selenium below the level of quantification in the second cycle of analysis. A high-level technical expert committee inspected the study area in July 2025 and collected four samples; it recommended further investigation of hydrogeology, wind patterns and nearby industries, including NLC, TAQA and IL&FS. The NGT directed TNPCB to file a status report on the ToR, study timeline and related details, and the case was posted for September 25.
