India’s West Asia Exports Recover Through Trade Diversification
India’s Goods Exports Rise 20% Through Trade Diversification: India’s exports to West Asia were affected by the ongoing conflict in the region, with exports declining by nearly 57% in March 2026 and 27% in April 2026. Subsequently, exports to the region recovered and reached US$5.7 billion in July 2026, registering an 8.8% increase compared with July 2025. The recovery was supported by increased cargo movement through alternative ports, including Oman’s ports outside the Strait of Hormuz and the UAE ports of Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, as the Jebel Ali Port in Dubai faced reduced cargo-handling capacity. The development highlights the role of trade diversification and alternative shipping routes in sustaining India’s exports.

Exotic Wildlife Registration in Erode
A joint inspection by the Forest Department and the Tamil Nadu Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (TNWCCB) at a farm in Erode found several exotic animals being kept without complete supporting documents. The inspection included African serval cats, including three cubs, and a Lar Gibbon was also part of the investigation. The registration process for the animals was found to be incomplete. The Living Animal Species (Reporting and Registration) Rules, 2024, require the reporting and registration of specified living animal species. Under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and the 2024 Rules, exotic animals listed in Schedule IV are required to be registered. Animals acquired after the 2022 amendment require relevant import licences and CITES permits. The farm owner had declared exotic species including cotton-top tamarins, red-handed tamarins, black-tufted marmosets and several species of Amazon parrots.

Lok Sabha Seat Freeze and Delimitation
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 14, 2026, enclosing the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly resolution adopted on August 12, 2026, regarding delimitation and women’s reservation. The resolution urged the Union Government to amend the Constitution to permanently freeze the strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 seats, retain the existing proportional distribution of seats among the States and Union Territories, and maintain the Lok Sabha–Rajya Sabha seat ratio at 2.2:1. It also called for implementing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from the next general election based on the existing 543 seats and subsequently in State Legislative Assembly elections. The resolution was linked to the proposed delimitation of parliamentary and Assembly constituencies based on population. It referred to Article 81(2)(a) and noted that Tamil Nadu’s Lok Sabha seats had been reduced from 41 to 39 in 1967. The Assembly resolution highlighted the possible impact of post-1971 Census population-based delimitation on the parliamentary representation of Southern States.
Legislative Privileges vs Freedom of Speech: Supreme Court to Hear Case
Supreme Court to Hear Legislative Privileges Case: The Supreme Court of India will hear from October 6, 2026 a long-pending case on the relationship between legislative privileges and freedom of speech and expression under the Constitution. The case originated in April 2003, after The Hindu published an editorial criticising the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly invoked Article 194 and passed a resolution seeking the arrest of five senior journalists of The Hindu, including its then Editor N. Ravi. The journalists approached the Supreme Court and obtained a stay against coercive action. On December 8, 2003, a Division Bench referred the matter to a five-judge Constitution Bench to examine the relationship between Articles 194(3), 19 and 21. On December 8, 2004, the five-judge Bench referred the case to a seven-judge Constitution Bench for an authoritative decision. On October 12, 2023, a seven-judge Bench headed by then Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud impleaded the Union Government as a party and sought assistance from the Attorney General of India. The case was listed again on February 2, 2024, and on August 12, 2026, before Chief Justice Surya Kant. The case primarily concerns the constitutional relationship between legislative privilege under Article 194 and freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a).
