India Finishes Fourth at the 23rd Commonwealth Games

The 23rd Commonwealth Games concluded in Glasgow, Scotland, on August 2, 2026, after being held from July 23 for 11 days. The event featured 3,000 athletes from 74 countries, competing in 10 sports across 4 venues, including 6 para-sports events. India finished in 4th place with 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Australia secured the first position with 171 medals, followed by England with 110 medals and Canada with 62 medals. India participated with a 191-member contingent, including 78 men and 48 women athletes. Sports such as hockey, shooting, wrestling, badminton, and table tennis were not included in this edition as part of a cost-cutting measure. In boxing, India won a total of 10 medals, including 2 gold and 2 silver medals in the final-day weight categories. Sachin Siwach won the men's 60 kg gold medal by defeating Tryagain Morning Ndevelo of Namibia, while Angkush Panghal won the men's 80 kg gold medal by defeating Dimeshi Shittu of England.

Gulveer Singh Creates Commonwealth Games Record

At the Commonwealth Games, India's Gulveer Singh won the bronze medal in the men's 5,000 metres by finishing in 13 minutes 24.95 seconds. Matthew Kipsumba of Kenya won the gold medal with 13:23.61, while Ky Robinson of Australia secured the silver medal with 13:24.70. With this achievement, Gulveer Singh became the first Indian to win a medal in the men's 5,000 metres at the Commonwealth Games. Having also won the silver medal in the 10,000 metres, he became the first Indian to win two athletics medals in a single Commonwealth Games.

24th Commonwealth Games in India

The 24th Commonwealth Games will be held in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, in October 2030. The event will also mark the centenary celebration of the Commonwealth Games, which began in 1930. This will be the second time that India hosts the Commonwealth Games. Earlier, India hosted the Games for the first time in New Delhi in 2010.

India Wins Titles at Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships

At the 22nd Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships held in New Delhi, Ankur Bhattacharjee won the men's singles title by defeating Payas Jain, while Yashaswini Ghorpade won the women's singles title by defeating Sreeja Akula. In the men's doubles, China's Shen Qi Wong and Jiawen Sung defeated India's Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah. In the women's doubles, India's Sreeja Akula and Cindrella Das defeated Yashaswini Ghorpade and Divyanshi Bhowmick. In the mixed doubles, India's Taneesha Kotecha and Manav Thakkar defeated Malaysia's Ai Jin Tee and Richard Rui Ji to win the title.

Tanvi Sharma Wins Taipei Open Title

India's Tanvi Sharma (17) won the women's singles title at the Taipei Open Badminton Super 300 tournament by defeating Vietnam's Nguyen Thuy Linh with a score of 21-16, 21-16 in the final held in Taipei. The match lasted 36 minutes. With this victory, Tanvi Sharma became the youngest champion in the history of the Taipei Open. She also became the first Indian to win the Taipei Open title after 17 years. Earlier, Saina Nehwal won the title in 2008, and Jwala Gutta–Diju won the mixed doubles title in 2009. Tanvi also became the fourth Indian woman to win a Super 300 or higher badminton title, after Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, and Devika Shikag.

Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games flag and host baton were handed over to India by Scotland during the closing ceremony of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Ahmedabad, Gujarat will host the next edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. The event will witness participation from athletes and officials from more than 70 countries and territories. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to announce the host city for the 2036 Olympic Games between now and 2030. In the 23rd Commonwealth Games, India finished in 4th place with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Despite the absence of sports such as wrestling and shooting, Indian athletes secured medals, with women winning 8 gold medals out of India's 13 gold medals.

Juventus Signs Randal Kolo Muani from PSG

Italian football club Juventus signed France forward Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for a transfer fee of €38 million, along with performance-based bonuses of up to €12 million. The 27-year-old player has signed a contract with Juventus until 2031. Kolo Muani previously played for Juventus on loan, scoring 10 goals in 22 matches before joining Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the 2025–26 season. He has represented the France national team in 32 matches and scored 9 goals. Earlier, Juventus also signed winger Kerim Alajbegovic from Bayer Leverkusen.

RBI Forex Swap Facility Attracts $40.82 Billion

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) stated that its concessional swap facility introduced to encourage foreign currency inflows attracted $40.82 billion till 31 July 2026. The facility, announced on 5 June 2026, aimed to strengthen India’s balance of payments and encourage capital inflows through new Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) [FCNR(B)] deposits, Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs), and External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs). Under the total inflows, FCNR(B) deposits accounted for $36.725 billion, OFCBs contributed $2.575 billion, and ECBs contributed $1.516 billion. The facility received strong participation from 8 June 2026 onwards, according to the RBI.

India’s Lepidoptera Diversity Documented

India is home to 13,703 species of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), accounting for 8.25% of the world's Lepidoptera species. The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) published the "Catalogue of Lepidoptera (Butterflies & Moths) of India" in the peer-reviewed journal Zootaxa. The catalogue was prepared by Navneet Singh and Rahul Joshi after 12 years of research, field exploration, museum curation, and literature verification. It records 13,703 species belonging to 3,705 genera, 240 subfamilies, 102 families, and 31 superfamilies, including 1,417 butterfly species and 12,286 moth species. The catalogue also identifies 2,205 species of Geometroidea, representing 8.8% of the world's known Geometroidea species. Dhriti Banerjee, Director of ZSI, stated that the catalogue will support biodiversity research, ecological monitoring, and conservation.

U.K. Prime Minister Supports Written Constitution

U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who assumed office two weeks ago, has expressed support for introducing a written Constitution for the United Kingdom. Unlike most countries, the United Kingdom does not have a single written constitutional document and is governed through statutes, common law judgments, and treaties. Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has made devolution of powers to regional authorities a key focus of his administration and stated that these reforms point towards a new constitutional settlement for the country.

India Approves Chinese and Hong Kong FDI Projects

During the 2025–26 financial year (April 2025–March 2026), the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Union Ministry of Commerce stated that the Central Government approved 63 Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects worth ₹10,292.67 crore. The highest approvals were given to Singapore with 5 projects worth ₹3,259.88 crore, followed by Britain with 5 projects worth ₹2,477.67 crore, and Thailand with 2 projects worth ₹1,600 crore. The Government also approved 1 Chinese FDI project worth ₹1 crore and 13 Hong Kong FDI projects worth ₹610.42 crore. However, it clarified that the relaxed FDI rules will not apply to companies registered in China, Hong Kong, or countries sharing land borders with India.

100-Week Anti-Drug Campaign Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the "Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyaan", a 100-week nationwide anti-drug campaign, through a virtual event. The campaign aims to protect youth from substance abuse and support the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. As part of the campaign, every Sunday for the next 100 weeks will feature activities related to art, culture, sports, and meditation. The Prime Minister also urged college and university professors to create awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and strengthen anti-drug initiatives on campuses. The Government highlighted its continued action against drug trafficking, including increased seizures of narcotics and arrests of drug dealers and smugglers, while emphasizing the role of medical treatment, rehabilitation centres, yoga, meditation, and community support in addressing substance abuse.

TRAI MyCall App Updated for Voice Quality Assessment

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) launched the updated version of the "TRAI MyCall" mobile application on August 3, 2026. The application enables telecom consumers to directly rate and report their real-time voice call experience. Consumer feedback is shared with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and TRAI in an anonymised form to identify network issues and improve Quality of Experience (QoE). The updated app includes a 1–5 star rating system, options to report issues such as call drops, echo, audio delay, cross connection, voice breaking, one-way audio, and long call setup time, post-call prompts, an interactive map for feedback history, and a coverage test feature to check signal strength. The app is available on Android through Google Play Store.

Gyan Bharatam Mission for Manuscript Preservation

The Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM) was announced by the Ministry of Culture during the Union Budget 2025–26 to preserve, document, and digitize India’s manuscript heritage. The Standing Finance Committee (SFC) has approved ₹491.66 crore for the implementation of the mission during 2025–2031. The National Manuscript Survey was launched in March 2026 across all States and Union Territories, and more than 1.19 crore manuscripts have been reported so far. Over 8 lakh manuscripts have been digitized across India, of which more than 4.40 lakh manuscripts are available for public access through the Gyan Bharatam portal. The mission aims to accelerate digitization, documentation, registration, and cataloguing of manuscripts, promote research in Indian languages and manuscriptology, provide access through print and machine-readable publications, and establish a National Digital Repository (NDR). In Bihar, institutions including Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda, Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library, Patna, and Shri Bodh Gaya Math, Bodh Gaya have been included under the mission. The information was provided by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on August 3, 2026.

India Achieves Near-Universal Banking Coverage

India has achieved near-universal banking coverage, with 99.92% of inhabited villages having access to a banking outlet within a 5 km radius. Out of 6,01,328 inhabited villages, 6,00,868 villages are covered through bank branches, Business Correspondents (BCs), or India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) centres as of 17 July 2026. The banking network includes more than 1.81 lakh bank branches, 17.36 lakh Business Correspondents, and 1.65 lakh India Post Payments Bank centres. Under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), 58.77 crore bank accounts have been opened with a total balance of ₹3,12,414 crore as of 17 July 2026. Digital agricultural credit initiatives include the Jan Samarth Portal, a single platform for government-sponsored loan and subsidy schemes, and the Kisan Rin Portal (KRP) launched in September 2023 for Aadhaar-based beneficiary verification and faster settlement of claims under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS) for Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loans. For cyber security and fraud prevention, the India Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC) has been established in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to share real-time fraud alerts using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data, while the RBI has launched the AI-based tool MuleHunter to identify money mule accounts. The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and helpline 1930 are operated by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Air Ambulance Service in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Minister K.G. Arunraj announced on August 2, 2026, at KMCH Hospital, Coimbatore, that an Air Ambulance service will soon be introduced in Tamil Nadu to meet emergency medical needs. The Government is taking steps to simplify organ donation procedures among first-degree relatives. Although Tamil Nadu continues to lead India in organ transplant surgeries, only 2 to 7 percent of the total requirement is currently being met. The Minister also stated that the State has consistently received the National Award as the best state in organ retrieval and transplantation from deceased donors. The Government plans to provide emergency first-aid training to people living near road accident black spot areas and is also focusing on stem cell research and artificial organ development technologies. He further announced that discussions to expand the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme have been completed and an official announcement will be made soon.
