Narendra Modi Becomes Longest-Serving Consecutively Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 4,399 days in office on June 10, 2026, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru's record of 4,398 days as the longest-serving consecutively elected Prime Minister of India. Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, served from 15 August 1947 to 27 May 1964, while his continuously elected tenure after the 1952 first Lok Sabha election lasted 4,398 days. Narendra Modi first became Prime Minister on 26 May 2014 after the victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and has continued in office following victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Before becoming Prime Minister, he served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 to May 2014. He is also the first Prime Minister of India born after Independence. A resolution appreciating this milestone was passed by the Union Cabinet in New Delhi on 10 June 2026. Congratulatory messages were sent by leaders including Donald Trump (President of the United States), Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), Giorgia Meloni (Prime Minister of Italy), Mohamed Muizzu (President of Maldives), Lee Jae-myung (President of South Korea), Anwar Ibrahim (Prime Minister of Malaysia), Tshering Tobgay (Prime Minister of Bhutan), Anura Kumara Dissanayake (President of Sri Lanka), William Samoei Ruto (President of Kenya), and Bola Ahmed Tinubu (President of Nigeria).

Shigella Infection Surveillance in Tamil Nadu

Following the detection of Shigella bacterial infection in Wayanad, Kerala, medical surveillance has been intensified in Tamil Nadu districts bordering Kerala, including Theni, Coimbatore, and Kanyakumari. Shigella is a bacterial infection that affects the digestive system and causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. The disease spreads through contaminated food and drinking water and can be treated using antibiotics and hydration therapy. Recently, the infection was confirmed in two students in Wayanad, and similar symptoms were reported among more than 350 contacts, including family members and schoolmates. In response, the Kerala Health Department initiated disease-prevention measures, while awareness and precautionary monitoring have been strengthened across Tamil Nadu. As of 10 June 2026, no Shigella infection had been confirmed in Tamil Nadu.

Sushmita Dev Resigns from Rajya Sabha and TMC

Sushmita Dev, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), resigned from both her parliamentary position and party membership on 10 June 2026. She submitted her resignation letter to Jagdeep Dhankhar, Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, citing personal and political reasons. Before joining Trinamool Congress, Sushmita Dev was a member of the Indian National Congress. She also met Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, in New Delhi. Earlier in the same week, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, another Rajya Sabha MP from Trinamool Congress, had also resigned from both the party and his parliamentary post.

Defence Ministry Signs ₹449 Crore Contract for Indian Navy

On 10 June 2026, the Ministry of Defence signed a ₹449 crore contract with ASSPL, a Bengaluru-based company, for the procurement of 20 satellite-jamming devices for the Indian Navy. These jamming systems are designed to disrupt surveillance by enemy spy satellites tracking naval vessels. The contract was signed under an initiative that promotes indigenous design, development, and domestic manufacturing. According to the agreement, 75% of the components used in the jamming devices are manufactured within India. The equipment will be integrated into the Indian Navy to enhance maritime security and protect naval ships from satellite-based monitoring.

Meta and Reliance to Establish AI Data Center in Gujarat

Meta and Reliance Industries have signed an agreement to establish a 150 MW Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The project is expected to be completed within two years and will be Meta’s first dedicated data center in India. The facility will operate using renewable energy, and seawater desalination technology will be used for cooling. To support its clean energy goals, Meta has partnered with CleanMax Enviro Energy Solutions to develop 337 MW of solar and wind energy projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka. With previously announced projects, the collaboration has crossed 500 MW. Meta has also partnered with Fourth Partner Energy to install and operate 55 MW renewable energy projects in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. These projects are aimed at supporting 100% renewable energy usage for Meta’s global operations.

SBI Provides ₹1.59 Crore CSR Funding for Social Initiatives

State Bank of India (SBI) has provided a total of ₹1.59 crore under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives for two social welfare projects. A sum of ₹60 lakh was allocated through the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) to the Nilgiris District Administration for strengthening solid waste management activities in Nilgiris district. The fund was presented by SBI Chairman Challa Sreenivasulu Setty to Nilgiris District Collector Selvi. In another initiative, SBI provided ₹99.40 lakh to install Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at major public places through the Chennai Towers Rotary Club Trust. The assistance was received by C. Krishnasunder, Chairman of the Rotary Trust and Trustee of the Chennai Towers Rotary Club Trust.

Indian-Origin Vaibhav Develops AI-Powered Drone Boat

An AI-powered drone boat named Corsair, developed by Saronic Technologies in Texas, USA, was used by the United States Navy to rescue two pilots after a US Apache helicopter was shot down in the Strait of Hormuz. The drone boat rescued the pilots within two hours. The 24-foot-long vessel can be remotely controlled, travel up to 1,000 nautical miles at a speed of 35 nautical miles, and carry a payload of 1,000 pounds. Vaibhav Altekar, an Indian-origin engineer and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Saronic Technologies, played a key role in developing the AI-based drone boat. He studied Electrical Engineering at the University of California and has also contributed to the development of a drone submarine for the Australian Navy.

India Records Highest-Ever Exports in FY 2025–26

At a conference of exporters, industrial bodies, and agricultural producer organizations held in Chandigarh, Nitin Kumar Yadav, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Commerce, stated that India’s total exports increased from USD 468 billion in FY 2014–15 to a record USD 863 billion (₹82 lakh crore) in FY 2025–26, registering a 5.7% compound annual growth rate. During this period, merchandise exports rose from USD 310 billion to USD 442 billion, while services exports increased from USD 158 billion to USD 421 billion, recording a 9.3% compound annual growth rate. Non-petroleum exports reached a record USD 387.9 billion. The India–Europe Free Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement includes a USD 100 billion Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) commitment and provides duty-free access for 98% of India’s exports. The India–European Union Free Trade Agreement (2026), covering 27 economies, is expected to support Indian exports worth ₹3.2 lakh crore with tariff concessions on 99% of bilateral trade.

FCNR(B) Deposit Interest Rate Hike

In June 2026, Indian banks increased interest rates on Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) [FCNR(B)] US Dollar Deposits with maturities ranging from 3 to 5 years, following measures announced by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to strengthen dollar inflows. The RBI introduced support measures, including bearing the full hedging cost for mobilizing new 3-year and 5-year FCNR(B) deposits. State Bank of India (SBI) increased interest rates on FCNR(B) deposits, with rates ranging from 5.25% to 6%, compared to earlier rates of about 2.95%–3.35%. Karur Vysya Bank raised its FCNR(B) US dollar deposit rate from 2.63% to 7% per annum with effect from 10 June 2026, while Tamilnad Mercantile Bank (TMB) increased rates from 3.50%–3.90% to 7% per annum for deposits with maturities between 3 and 5 years. These measures were aimed at attracting higher US dollar deposits into the Indian banking system.

Pawan Hans Expansion Plan

Pawan Hans Limited (PHL), a Government-owned helicopter company, is under consideration for a ₹500 crore loan from the Central Government with a proposed tenure of 10 years. The financial assistance is intended for the purchase of new helicopters, expansion of offshore operations, re-entry into the seaplane sector, and development of specialized aviation services. Pawan Hans is set to procure 10 indigenous Dhruv New Generation (NG) helicopters from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The company has also secured a ₹2,141 crore personnel transportation contract from ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation), under which the first four Dhruv NG helicopters will be deployed for offshore operations. The company is also expanding activities in regional connectivity and Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) in collaboration with state governments.

Microfinance Credit Guarantee Scheme Extended

The Ministry of Finance has extended the validity of the Credit Guarantee Scheme 2.0 (CGS 2.0) for Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) by an additional two months. The scheme will remain in force until 31 August 2026 or until guarantees worth ₹20,000 crore are issued, whichever occurs earlier. The government has also increased the maximum loan eligibility for large Non-Banking Financial Company–Microfinance Institutions (NBFC-MFIs) and MFIs from ₹300 crore to ₹1,000 crore. The enhanced limit is subject to a condition that it shall not exceed 20% of the total assets under management of the institution.

Zoho Launches ‘Nathu La’ Server Platform in India

**Zoho Corporation** has launched the **‘Nathu La’ server platform**, an India-designed enterprise data hardware system aimed at strengthening technological self-reliance. The server platform was developed through more than **five years of research and development** involving local talent in **Nagpur**. Built on **Intel Xeon 6 processors**, the server is designed for **virtualization, high-performance computing (HPC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and storage applications**. According to Zoho, the platform achieves comparable performance with **12–18% lower power consumption** and **20–30% lower total cost of ownership** than competing global solutions. Zoho has already deployed **1,000 Nathu La servers** in its data centers across India and plans to operationalize about **2,000 servers by the end of the year**. Key manufacturing and development activities were carried out in multiple Indian cities, including **Pune, Nagpur, Chennai, and Bengaluru**.

May 2026 Becomes Second Warmest May Globally

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), operated by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), May 2026 was the second warmest May recorded globally across land and ocean regions. Based on ERA5 data, the global average surface air temperature in May 2026 was 15.81°C, which was 0.55°C above the 1991–2020 average and 1.42°C above the pre-industrial (1850–1900) average. The average Sea Surface Temperature (SST) between 60°S and 60°N was 20.90°C, making it the second warmest May after the record set in 2024 (20.93°C). Several European countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Portugal, experienced intense early heatwaves, while heavy rainfall led to severe flooding in Turkey, Bulgaria, and Moldova. The report also noted that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean remain elevated, with conditions indicating the possible development of El Niño in the coming months.

Defence Contract for GNSS Jammers

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Accord Software and Systems Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru for the procurement of 20 Advanced Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Jammers for the Indian Navy at a cost of ₹449 crore. The system has 75% indigenous content and the contract was signed under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) [Buy (IDDM)] category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The GNSS jammers are designed to reduce the satellite signal reception and tracking capabilities of enemy GNSS receivers and can perform spoofing and deceptive jamming functions. The procurement supports the initiatives of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India and aims to strengthen India’s maritime security capabilities. A two-day awareness seminar on Defence Procurement, iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), Technology Perspective and Capability Roadmap (TPCR), and testing procedures for MSMEs and startups is being organized at Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi by the Directorate of Indigenisation, HQ IDS and Centre for Joint Warfare Studies (CENJOWS).

Airtel Rebrands ‘Priority Postpaid’ as ‘Fast Lane’

Bharti Airtel has renamed its ‘Priority Postpaid’ service as ‘Fast Lane’ shortly after its launch. The company stated that there is no change in the services offered and that the plan has not been withdrawn. The service uses 5G Network Slicing Technology to provide enhanced network performance for postpaid users. The plan, launched on May 19, sparked discussions regarding Net Neutrality. In this context, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) sought clarification from Airtel officials. Airtel stated that data related to the service has been shared with TRAI and that the technology is being implemented in line with global practices followed in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Singapore.

Data Centre Power Consumption Growth 2026

According to a Gartner report, global Data Centre electricity consumption is expected to increase by 26.4% in 2026, rising from 447 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2025 to 565 TWh in 2026. The global electricity demand of data centres is projected to increase from 104 gigawatts (GW) in 2025 to 132 GW in 2026, and may reach 290 GW by 2030. Gartner analyst Linglan Wang stated that the growing demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads is driving unprecedented growth in data centre power consumption. Gartner estimates that AI-optimised servers will account for 31% of total data centre electricity consumption in 2026. The electricity consumption of AI-optimised servers is expected to rise from 95 TWh in 2025 to 175 TWh in 2026, while conventional servers are projected to increase marginally from 193 TWh to 195 TWh during the same period.

Floating Solar Power Potential in India

A national-level study conducted by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), has estimated that India's water bodies have the potential to generate 102.18 GW of floating solar power capacity. The study titled “Solar Energy Potential of India (Floating Solar)” identified floating solar installations as a solution to land constraints in solar energy expansion. India currently has around 100 GW of solar power capacity, most of which is ground-mounted. The assessment was based on geospatial analysis of inland water bodies using six criteria, including water availability, depth, solar radiation, and proximity to roads and substations. The study identified 1,946 sq. km of suitable water surface area, with the highest potential in Maharashtra (16.28 GW), Madhya Pradesh (14.89 GW), Karnataka (13.69 GW), Odisha (12.81 GW) and Telangana (10.72 GW). The Omkareshwar Floating Solar Park on the Narmada River in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, with a capacity of 278 MW, was highlighted as a major floating solar project in India. The report also noted India's target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

Tamil Nadu Receives National Recognition for Tribal Welfare Programmes

At a national conference organized by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs in New Delhi, the performance of the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP) implemented across states was evaluated based on indicators such as administrative efficiency, project coordination, data and monitoring management, protection of tribal rights, livelihood development, institutional maturity, risk management, and project implementation capacity. Tamil Nadu was placed in the High-Performance States category (Data-Driven Tribal Mission Unit) and received a ₹5 lakh award from the Union Government for its achievements in tribal welfare programmes. The assessment highlighted Tamil Nadu’s data-based planning and monitoring systems, inter-departmental coordination, and efforts toward tribal rights and livelihood development. Under the Integrated Tribal Development Project in Kallakurichi district, notable initiatives included tribal students from government residential schools excelling in higher education and technical entrance examinations, increased tapioca production in the Kalrayan Hills, formation of horticultural producer groups for tribal farmers, and distribution of 9,547 Forest Rights Pattas under the Forest Rights Act. Kallakurichi district was recognized for the effective implementation of the project. Ranjana Chopra, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs, presented the award, and Ashok K. Lahiri, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, attended the event.

Padma Shri Bharathiraja Passes Away

Padma Shri Bharathiraja, one of the leading film directors of Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai on 10 June 2026 after prolonged illness. He had been receiving treatment at his residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, following medical care at a private hospital. Bharathiraja was known for directing films based on rural themes and was a recipient of the Padma Shri, one of India’s civilian honours. His body was kept for public homage in Chennai before being taken to his native district Theni. His final rites are scheduled to be held near Vathalagundu with state honours. Several political leaders and film personalities, including Chief Minister Vijay, M.K. Stalin, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Ilaiyaraaja, paid their respects. Condolences were also expressed by Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, ministers, and chief ministers of various states.

The 23rd FIFA World Cup begins on 11 June 2026 and will continue until 19 July 2026. The tournament is being jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, marking the first time in FIFA World Cup history that three countries are co-hosting the event. Matches will be played across 16 cities in the three host nations. For the first time, the tournament features 48 teams instead of 32, with a newly introduced Round of 32 knockout stage. Kerala Announces Free Bus Travel for Women

The Government of Kerala has announced free travel for women in Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) ordinary buses from 15 June 2026. The scheme was implemented by Kerala Chief Minister Satheesan following an election promise made by the United Democratic Front (UDF) during the Kerala Legislative Assembly election campaign. Under the scheme, women of all age groups can travel free of cost on ordinary KSRTC buses. The Kerala Government already provides ₹1,500 crore annually to KSRTC and has announced an additional ₹800 crore annual subsidy for implementing the scheme. The scheme is initially applicable only to ordinary government buses and may be expanded based on future evaluations.

Meghalaya Suspends Official Foreign Travel for Six Months

The Government of Meghalaya has imposed a six-month suspension on official foreign travel by Ministers, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), and State Government officials, including permanent and contractual employees. The decision was announced through an official notification issued in Shillong and was implemented following an order from the Governor’s office. The measure aims to reduce government expenditure amid global economic uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions and pressure on foreign exchange resources. As a result of the order, eight foreign training programmes and experience-sharing visits involving about 68 officials and public representatives from various departments have been postponed.

Ahmedabad Metro Airport Link Approved

The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹2,169 crore project to connect Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, with the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Network. The project will be implemented under Ahmedabad Metro Rail Phase 2-A and involves a 6.032 km metro extension. The corridor will include five metro stations, comprising four elevated stations and one underground station. The stations on the route are Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar, and Airport. Upon completion of Phase 2, the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Network will have a total length of 77.63 km. The project aims to provide direct metro connectivity to the airport and improve public transport access between Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and GIFT City.

Chhattisgarh Mahua Liquor Policy for Tribal Economy

The Chhattisgarh Government has approved a plan to develop a professional production model for Mahua-based traditional liquor to strengthen the tribal economy and promote the utilization of forest resources. The decision was formally approved during a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh. The government has directed that Mahua liquor production activities be treated on par with agro-processing industries under the state's industrial policy. To implement the policy, officials have been instructed to study existing models in other states. The government will invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) from private entrepreneurs, while ensuring that no subsidies beyond the industrial policy framework are provided. Entrepreneurs will be required to declare procurement prices for raw materials in advance. The Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Produce (Trade and Development) Cooperative Federation will function as the nodal coordinating agency and conduct a feasibility study on Liquor Manufacturing Units (LMUs), including assessment of Mahua availability, raw material requirements, supply-chain economics, and market potential. The government will also facilitate marketing channels, licensing support, banking linkages, and plans to organize an investors’ conference for the initiative.

China Restricts Indian Red Chilli Imports

China, the largest importer of Indian dried red chillies, has rejected three consignments of dried red chillies imported from India after detecting residues of the pesticide Methamidophos and has temporarily suspended the operations of three Indian export companies. India exports nearly one-third of its chilli exports to China, mainly the ‘Teja’ variety used for extracting oleoresin. In 2024–25, India’s chilli exports increased to 7.15 lakh tonnes, recording a 19% growth over the previous year, of which 2.36 lakh tonnes were exported to China. Methamidophos is a pesticide registered for use on certain crops in India and may also occur as a degradation product of Acephate. According to Bhagirath Choudhary, Founder-Director of the South Asia Biotechnology Centre (SABC), China has enforced strict food safety and residue regulations, leading to increased scrutiny of agricultural imports from India.

Foreign Universities Approved for Campuses in India

The Ministry of Education has issued Letters of Approval (LoAs) to three foreign higher education institutions—University of Bristol, University of York, and University of New South Wales (UNSW)—to establish campuses in India. The approval letters were handed over by Dr. Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education and Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), in the presence of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The initiative is part of the internationalisation objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

RBI Cancels Registration of 135 NBFCs

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the Certificates of Registration (CoR) of 135 Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs). The affected entities include Express Fincap House, Akshay Fiscal Services, Times Finance (P), Jupiter Projects (P), Jupiter Finvest, Essel Finance Business Loans, and Citiwide Financial Services. According to the RBI, a majority of these NBFCs have their registered office addresses in West Bengal. The cancellation of registration certificates means these entities are no longer authorized to operate as NBFCs under RBI regulations.

Claude Fable 5 AI Model Released by Anthropic

Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, a new Mythos-class Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, for general-purpose and large-scale use. The model is designed with enhanced safety features and is intended for applications in software engineering, knowledge work, vision, and other domains. Anthropic stated that certain sensitive queries related to cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, and distillation may be redirected to Claude Opus 4.8. According to the company, more than 95% of Fable 5 sessions operate without requiring such redirection. Anthropic has also introduced Claude Mythos 5, a related model aimed at cybersecurity professionals and infrastructure providers, with some restrictions relaxed. Andrej Karpathy, an AI researcher associated with Anthropic, highlighted the model’s capability in handling complex tasks, while Anusree Verma, Senior Director at Gartner, noted its role in advancing agentic automation.
