CBSE Leadership Change and OSM Evaluation Probe

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) witnessed a leadership change on 2 June 2026 amid controversy over the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used for evaluating Class 12 answer sheets. Rahul Singh was replaced as CBSE Chairman, and Himanshu Gupta was replaced as Secretary. Lokhande Prashant Sitaram, a senior IAS officer, was appointed as the new Chairman, while Varun Bhardwaj became the new Secretary. The Central Government also constituted a one-member inquiry committee under S. Radha Chauhan, Chairperson of the Skill Development Commission, to investigate the award of the OSM contract and submit its report within one month. The CBSE Class 12 examination results, involving about 17.68 lakh students, were declared on 13 May 2026, with a pass percentage of over 85%. Complaints were raised regarding the OSM evaluation process, including issues related to answer-sheet scanning and re-evaluation procedures. Separately, CBSE reported cyberattack attempts on its re-evaluation portal, stating that around 15 lakh attack attempts and about one lakh unauthorized access attempts were detected within a short period. CBSE fixed a fee of ₹100 for viewing scanned answer sheets and ₹25 for re-evaluation of a specific answer.

Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 Agreement for Tamil Nadu

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the extended implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 was signed on 2 June 2026 in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil through video conferencing. The Jal Jeevan Mission, initially implemented from 2019 to 2024, has been extended by the Central Government until December 2028. In Tamil Nadu, 46.71 lakh household tap water connections have been provided under the scheme, benefiting 1.86 crore people. The programme includes 45 new Combined Water Supply Schemes, rejuvenation of 56 Combined Water Supply Schemes, and implementation of 21,258 Single Village Water Supply Schemes. The total approved project cost is ₹18,123.05 crore, with the Central Government's share at ₹9,025.68 crore and the Tamil Nadu Government's share at ₹9,097.37 crore. Following the signing of the agreement, Tamil Nadu will receive the first instalment of ₹2,177.27 crore from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti. The scheme aims to ensure safe, adequate, and sustainable drinking water supply to all rural households. Important officials associated with the event included V. Somanna, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways, Ashok K.K. Meena, Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and R. Jaya, Principal Resident Commissioner of Tamil Nadu House, New Delhi.
