AIADMK MLA Resignation and Vacant Assembly Seats

AIADMK MLA Esakki Subbaiah from Ambasamudram resigned from his MLA post and joined TVK. He belonged to the faction led by C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani against AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. Earlier, Maragatham Kumaravel (Maduranthakam), Sathyabama (Dharapuram) and Jayakumar (Perundurai) had also resigned and joined TVK. Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar accepted the resignations after a handwritten resignation letter was submitted by Esakki Subbaiah. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat declared Ambasamudram, Maduranthakam, Dharapuram and Perundurai constituencies vacant. As Chief Minister Vijay had already resigned from Trichy East constituency, the number of vacant Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu has increased to five.

Rs 5 Fish Meal Scheme in West Bengal

The West Bengal Government has decided to provide “Maach-Bhaat” (fish and rice meal) for Rs 5 in government-run canteens across the state for two days a week. The scheme is expected to be implemented across West Bengal after a final decision by the government. These government canteens already provide egg rice and rice meals and are used by daily wage earners, labourers, transport workers, low-income families and urban poor. The announcement comes after the West Bengal election results in which the BJP formed the government under the leadership of Suvendu Adhikari.

NLC India–NPCIL MoU for Nuclear Power Projects

NLC India Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to implement nuclear power projects based on indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs). The agreement was signed on May 25 at Neyveli in the presence of Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLC India Limited, and Bhuwan Chandra Pathak, Chairman and Managing Director of NPCIL. The MoU was signed by M. Venkatachalam, Director (Power), NLC India Limited, and Rajesh, Director (Technical), NPCIL. The collaboration, through a proposed joint venture framework, will provide investment opportunities in NPCIL’s ongoing and upcoming 700 MW PHWR projects.

High-Level Committee on Demographic Change

The Central Government has constituted a high-level committee to study demographic changes in India caused by illegal immigration and other unnatural practices. The committee was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2025 Independence Day address and its formation was informed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on May 26. The committee is headed by retired Supreme Court judge Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar. Members include the Census Commissioner, retired IAS officer Durga Shankar Mishra, retired IPS officer Balaji Srivastava, and Dr. Shamika Ravi, while the Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs will serve as the Member Secretary. The committee will examine demographic changes related to illegal immigration, migration patterns based on religious and social groups, cross-border activities, economic impacts and socio-ecological changes. It has been tasked with recommending measures relating to prevention of illegal immigration, identification and deportation of illegal immigrants, strengthening border management, population stabilization, monitoring demographic trends, and enhancing Centre–State cooperation. The committee will submit its report within one year, extendable by six months if required.

Narendra Modi Completes 12 Years as Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed 12 years in office on May 26. He first assumed office as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP alliance also won the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, leading to his third consecutive term as Prime Minister. Before becoming Prime Minister, Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from October 2001 until May 2014. He is noted in the news as the first Prime Minister of India born after Independence and the second longest-serving Prime Minister in succession after Jawaharlal Nehru. Quad Initiative on Indo-Pacific Energy Security

Government to Sell 2% Stake in Coal India through OFS

The Government of India announced the sale of up to 2% stake in Coal India Ltd (CIL) through the Offer for Sale (OFS) method. The offer includes a 1% base offer and an additional 1% Green Shoe Option in case of oversubscription. The floor price has been fixed at ₹412 per share, and the government is expected to mobilise more than ₹5,000 crore through the sale. According to Arunish Chawla, Secretary of the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), the OFS opens for non-retail investors on May 27 and for retail investors on May 29. At present, the government holds more than 63% stake in Coal India. For the March quarter, the company reported an 11.1% increase in consolidated net profit to ₹10,839.18 crore, while operational revenue rose to ₹46,490.03 crore. However, the company’s annual net profit for the financial year ending March 31, 2026 declined to ₹31,094.29 crore from ₹35,505.79 crore in FY25. Coal production in 2025-26 stood at 768.19 million tonnes, compared to 781.06 million tonnes in 2024-25.

India–US Critical Minerals Agreement

India and the United States signed a framework agreement on critical minerals and rare earth elements to strengthen cooperation in the sector. The agreement was signed in New Delhi by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, attended by representatives of India, the United States, Japan and Australia. The agreement covers the entire supply chain, including mining exploration, mineral processing, refining, recycling and joint funding. It is linked to the political decision taken during the 2025 Modi–Trump Summit in Washington. India plans to enhance its domestic mineral processing capacity using US technology, investment and market opportunities. Taiwan Overtakes India in Stock Market Capitalisation

Tamil Nadu Players Shine in Commonwealth Chess Championship

The Commonwealth Chess Championship was held in Sri Lanka from May 16 and concluded on May 26, with participation from 14 Commonwealth countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, South Africa and Australia. Indian Grandmaster P. Iniyan won two gold medals in the Rapid and Blitz sections by scoring 6.5 points in 7 games in each format. In the youth categories, Tamil Nadu players won five medals in the Rapid section. S. Tamil Amudhan, who crossed the 2,000 Elo rating milestone at the age of 8, won gold in the U-10 category, while A.
