CMRL Introduces Anti-Drag Safety Feature

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has introduced an ‘Anti-Drag’ safety feature in metro trains for the first time in India’s metro network. The feature has been introduced in Phase-1 metro trains to prevent passengers from being dragged if clothes or objects get trapped in automatic train doors. The system provides additional protection beyond the existing obstacle-detection system in metro trains. The train equipped with the new safety feature was flagged off by Manoj Goyal, Director (Systems and Operations) of CMRL. The technology was jointly developed by Faiveley Transport Rail Technologies India Pvt Ltd and Alstom Transport India Limited.

Rare Indian Skimmer Spotted at Illalur Lake

A rare sighting of the globally endangered Indian Skimmer (Rynchops albicollis) was recorded at Illalur Lake near Chengalpattu on May 10. The bird sighting was documented by birders Ravichandran, I. Abinesh, and Madhan between 7:55 am and 8:30 am. This is the second recorded sighting of the species at Illalur Lake and the 20th documented sighting in Tamil Nadu during the last 11 years. The global population of the Indian Skimmer is estimated to be fewer than 3,000 birds. Illalur Lake, located near the Nemmeli coastal wetland, serves as a seasonal habitat for migratory and water birds including Small Pratincole, Little Ringed Plover, and Black-winged Stilt. The wetland lies along the Central Asian Flyway, an important migratory bird route. Concerns have been raised regarding the proposed Mamallan Reservoir Project, as Illalur and Nemmeli wetlands are hydrologically connected and located about 4 km apart. According to eBird data, only 19 Indian Skimmer sightings were recorded in Tamil Nadu between 2015 and 2024, with 89% of sightings reported from Pulicat Lake. The conservation group Suzhal Arivom has recommended declaring the Illalur-Nemmeli wetland complex as an Important Bird Area (IBA).

Central Government Restricts Silver Imports

The Central Government has imposed strict restrictions on the import of silver from foreign countries under the revised import policy. Importers of silver bars, unprocessed silver, and silver powder must now obtain mandatory approval from the Central Government before import. The revised rules also mandate compliance with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regulations for importing specified silver categories. The move was taken to control large-scale imports of precious metals. Earlier, the import duty on gold and silver was increased from 6% to 15%. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) also tightened rules under the Advance Authorization Scheme for duty-free gold imports by gems and jewellery exporters, fixing the maximum gold import limit at 100 kg per licence. First-time applicants seeking concessions will receive approval only after inspection of production units by officials, and duty-free authorization will be granted only if 50% of exports under previous licences have been completed. Importers of duty-free gold must submit reports with the help of chartered accountants twice every month, and companies must submit monthly reports to the DGFT. India’s gold imports increased to ₹6.9 lakh crore during the 2025-26 financial year, following which the Central Government increased import duty on gold.

CBSE Makes Three-Language Formula Mandatory

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made the Three-Language Formula compulsory for Class 9 students from July 1, 2026. This measure has been introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. Under the new system, students must study three languages, including two Indian languages, while a foreign language can be selected as the third language. For Class 10, no public board examination will be conducted for the third language, and assessment will be carried out internally by schools. The performance of students in the third language will be included in the CBSE certificate. Schools have been directed to register the three-language curriculum for Classes 6 to 9 on the OASIS portal before June 30, 2026. Schools facing shortages of qualified language teachers may adopt interim measures such as teacher-sharing between schools, online classes, and appointing retired teachers. Appropriate exemptions for children with special needs will be provided under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

Centre Appoints Officials in NTA

The Central Government has appointed two Joint Secretaries and two Joint Directors in the National Testing Agency (NTA). According to the order issued by the Union Ministry of Personnel, Anuja Bapat, a 1998 batch Indian Statistical Service (ISS) officer, and Ruchita Vij, a 2004 batch Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officer, have been appointed as Joint Secretaries in the NTA for a period of five years. Akash Jain, an Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer, and Adityarajendra Bojkatia, an Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IA&AS) officer, have been appointed as Joint Directors in the NTA. Earlier, the NEET examination conducted on May 3 was cancelled by the NTA after the question paper leak was discovered following the examination.

West Bengal Records Highest Voter Turnout Since Independence

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, the two-phase West Bengal Assembly Election held in April 2026 recorded a voter turnout of 93.71%, the highest in any Assembly or Lok Sabha election since Independence. The previous highest turnout was 93.61% recorded in the 2013 Tripura Assembly Election. States and Union Territories with high voter turnout include Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, and Puducherry. Elections were conducted in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, with vote counting held on May 4. Except in Assam, the Election Commission conducted a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, leading to the removal of lakhs of voters from the rolls. In West Bengal, more than 90 lakh names were removed, including 27.16 lakh names deleted through an adjudication process ordered by the Supreme Court. Election Commission data also showed an increase in voter numbers compared to 2021, with Tamil Nadu voters increasing from 4.63 crore to 4.93 crore, Puducherry from 83.75 lakh to 86.69 lakh, West Bengal from 6.04 crore to 6.38 crore, and Kerala from 2.09 crore to 2.16 crore. The decision to conduct the SIR has been challenged in the Supreme Court, and the judgment has been reserved.

Tata Electronics and ASML Sign MoU for Semiconductor Manufacturing

Tata Electronics Limited and ASML, a leading semiconductor equipment manufacturing company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote advanced semiconductor manufacturing in India. Under the agreement, ASML will support the establishment and production expansion of Tata Electronics’ 300 mm (12-inch) semiconductor fabrication plant (fab) at Dholera in Gujarat. The collaboration will focus on deploying ASML’s advanced lithography tools and solutions in the semiconductor manufacturing facility.

IIT-Madras and IISc Develop Carbon-Free Ferrocene Analogue

Researchers from IIT-Madras and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru have developed the world’s first stable carbon-free ferrocene analogue, according to a study published in the journal Science. The new structure uses boron rings and the metal osmium instead of the carbon rings and iron atom found in traditional ferrocene. Ferrocene, discovered more than seven decades ago, is considered a landmark compound in organometallic chemistry with applications in materials science and medicine. The research team used computer modelling to identify osmium as the suitable metal to stabilise the boron sandwich structure. The structure was confirmed using X-ray analysis. The study was co-authored by Sundargopal Ghosh, Professor at IIT-Madras. The discovery is expected to contribute to advances in inorganic chemistry and the development of high-temperature stable catalysts.

GeM Celebrates Incorporation Day 2026

Government e-Marketplace (GeM) celebrated its Incorporation Day 2026 on May 17. The GeM Special Purpose Vehicle (GeM SPV), a Section 8 non-profit company under the Ministry of Commerce, was incorporated under the Companies Act, 2013 on May 17, 2017 to develop and manage the GeM platform. GeM supports public procurement in India through digital governance and promotes initiatives such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, Vocal for Local, and Viksit Bharat 2047. The platform currently has more than 1.36 lakh government buyers and nearly 25 lakh sellers and service providers, of which around 72% are Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs). During the 2025-26 financial year, over 11 lakh MSEs received more than 51 lakh orders worth ₹2.36 lakh crore through GeM. Women-led MSEs secured orders worth over ₹28,000 crore, while SC/ST entrepreneurs received orders exceeding ₹6,000 crore. Startups on the platform received procurement orders worth more than ₹19,000 crore. Mihir Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of GeM, highlighted the role of the platform in supporting domestic enterprises and government procurement. As part of the celebrations, GeM organised a Vendor Assessment Workshop on May 15, 2026, and will conduct “GeM Manthan” on May 21, 2026, followed by a consultation meeting with Defence Services representatives on May 22, 2026.

Committee on Empowerment of Women Constituted

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has constituted the Committee on Empowerment of Women. BJP Lok Sabha MP Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari has been appointed as the Chairperson of the committee. The committee consists of 18 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 members from the Rajya Sabha. Members from the Lok Sabha include Hema Malini, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, and Iqra Choudhary. Members from the Rajya Sabha include Sudha Murty, P.T. Usha, and Swati Maliwal.

Rajasthan’s First Semiconductor Plant Inaugurated

Rajasthan entered the semiconductor sector with the inauguration of the state’s first semiconductor plant at Bhiwadi on May 15. The Semiconductor ATMP/OSAT facility of Sahasra Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd., India’s first SME-led semiconductor facility, was virtually inaugurated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology. Along with this, the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) developed by ELCINA at Salarpur, Khushkhera, Bhiwadi was also inaugurated. The event was held in the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

IBCA 2026 Summit Preparatory Event Held at Gir

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav inaugurated the ‘Lion’ Species Spotlight Programme at Gir National Park, Sasan Gir, Gujarat, as a pre-summit event for the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026. India will host the first-ever IBCA Summit in New Delhi on June 1 and 2, 2026 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit theme is “Save Big Cats, Save Humanity, Save Ecosystem”, and it will include participation from representatives of 95 countries across Asia, Africa and the Americas. The IBCA functions as a global coalition for the conservation of seven major big cat species — lion, tiger, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma. Conservation initiatives highlighted during the event included the Asiatic Lion Population Estimation, development of Barda Wildlife Sanctuary as an alternative habitat for Asiatic lions, establishment of the National Wildlife Referral Centre in Junagadh, and habitat expansion projects in the Gir region.

MeitY Launches IP Catalyst Platform

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) organised a one-day national conference titled “From Patent to Product: Accelerating IP Commercialization in Electronics & IT” on May 12, 2026 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. The conference focused on strengthening India’s Intellectual Property (IP) and innovation ecosystem in the electronics and information technology sector. During the inaugural session, the ‘IP Catalyst’ initiative and its digital platform were launched by MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan. The event was attended by Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary, MeitY and CEO of India Semiconductor Mission, Sunita Verma, Group Coordinator, MeitY, Prof. (Dr.) Unnat P. Pandit, Registrar of Copyrights under DPIIT, and Sanjay Wandhekar, Centre Head of CDAC Pune.

Delhi Reduces VAT on Aviation Fuel

The Delhi Government has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) from 25% to 7% for an initial period of six months. The decision was announced after a similar move by Maharashtra. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the reduction in VAT may lead to an estimated revenue loss of around ₹985 crore for the government. The VAT collected from ATF contributes approximately ₹1,368 crore annually, accounting for nearly 19% of the total annual VAT revenue of the Delhi Government. Fuel expenses account for more than 40% of the operating costs of airlines.

India’s First Satellite-Tagged Ganges Softshell Turtle

India’s first satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) has been released to monitor turtle habitats in the Brahmaputra river basin. The initiative aims to study and track the habitat use of riverine turtles through satellite monitoring. The Ganges softshell turtle is identified by distinct arrowhead-shaped markings on the top of its head, which differentiate it from other river turtles.

Singapore Becomes India’s Second-Largest Export Destination

According to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Singapore became India’s second-largest export destination in April 2026, surpassing the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The shift in trade patterns followed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz from March 2, which affected trade routes in the West Asia region. India has Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with both Singapore and the UAE. Exports to Singapore increased by 180% to 3.20 billion US dollars in April, while exports to the UAE declined by 36% to 2.18 billion US dollars. On the import side, Oman, Peru, and Nigeria entered India’s top 20 import source countries, with imports from Oman increasing to 1.48 billion US dollars. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in West Asian energy infrastructure led to a rise in global energy prices and increased India’s import bill. The value of the Indian Rupee declined by 5.2% since the end of February. To reduce economic pressure, the government introduced austerity measures to reduce foreign exchange usage and fuel consumption. Oil marketing companies also increased petrol and diesel prices for the first time in four years.

Chola-Era Anaimangalam Copper Plates Returned to India

The Chola-era Anaimangalam Copper Plates, which had been in the possession of Leiden University in the Netherlands since 1862, have been handed over to India during an official ceremony held at The Hague in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. The copper plates, believed to have disappeared around 300 years ago, are considered important historical records related to the Chola Empire and its relations with the Srivijaya Empire. In 2023, the Government of India requested the return of the copper plates from Leiden University. An investigation revealed that the Dutch East India Company (VOC) excavated the plates at Nagapattinam between 1687 and 1700 and removed them from India without the consent of the original owners. The Colonial Collections Committee recommended the unconditional return of the plates to India, and Leiden University accepted the recommendation. The plates provide historical evidence of connections between South India and Southeast Asia, including religious coexistence, maritime diplomacy, and cultural exchange during the 11th century. S. Vijay Kumar, co-founder of India Pride, stated that efforts to recover the copper plates had continued for more than a decade.

UN Forum on Forests 2026 and Global Forest Goals

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) participated in the 21st Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF21) held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York City. The forum reviewed progress towards the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), established by the forum in 2000, includes IUCN as a member. The forum identified six global forest goals, including reversing forest loss, improving forest livelihoods, sustainable use of forest resources, resource mobilization, inclusive forest governance, and inter-sectoral cooperation. The Global Forest Goals Report 2026 stated that more than 40 million hectares of forests were lost globally between 2015 and 2025, and only 7 out of 26 forest-related targets had been broadly achieved. The report also highlighted pressures on forests due to land-use change, climate impacts, wildfires, pests, and illegal activities, while noting progress in expanding protected forest areas and recognizing forests as major carbon sinks and biodiversity reservoirs.

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary Visits Uganda

Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, represented India at the swearing-in ceremony of Uganda President Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. During the visit, he conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of President Museveni assuming his seventh term. He also visited the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU-I) Uganda Campus at Jinja, which is India’s first overseas public academic campus and where the first batch of students was admitted in October 2025. The visit also included interactions with the Indian diaspora in Kampala, reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening ties with Uganda and the African continent.

M. Mukundan Selected for ONV Literary Award 2026

M. Mukundan has been selected for the 2026 ONV Literary Award, which is presented annually in memory of late poet O.N.V. Kurup. The award recognises contributions to Malayalam fiction and novel writing. The award carries a cash prize of ₹3 lakh and a citation. It will be presented on May 27, 2026, marking the 95th birth anniversary of O.N.V. Kurup, at Thiruvananthapuram.

Sikkim Celebrates 51st Statehood Day

Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, participated in the 51st Statehood Day celebrations of Sikkim along with Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang. During the event, inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremonies were held for 21 development projects worth ₹223 crore supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER). Under the NESIDS-Roads scheme, connectivity projects worth over ₹45 crore were launched, including bridge works connecting NH-10 with IBP Road, and bridge projects across the Rongrong River in Pakyong district and Rangpo Khola in Namchi district. Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone for the 15.8-km Rimbi Khola–Yuksam road project in Gyalshing district at a cost of ₹24.52 crore. The Mission Sikkim Organics project, worth ₹360 crore, with a contribution of ₹85 crore from MDoNER, is expected to benefit more than 66,000 farmer families.
