World Asthma Day is observed every year on the first Tuesday of May, which often falls around May 6. It aims to raise awareness about asthma and improve care for people affected by this respiratory condition.

TVK Vote Share in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2026

In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election (May 2026), actor Vijay’s Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) secured 1,72,26,209 votes (34.92%) while contesting independently within two years of its formation. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam contested in 164 constituencies and received 1,19,29,144 votes (24.19%), while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam contested in 167 constituencies and secured 1,04,62,146 votes (21.21%). The Naam Tamilar Katchi contested in 234 constituencies and obtained 19,72,537 votes (4%). Due to the emergence of TVK, vote share losses were recorded as 13.51% for DMK, 12.08% for AIADMK, and 2.58% for NTK, leading to DMK losing power and moving to second position, while AIADMK shifted to third position in the election results.

One-Vote Margin Victory in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election

In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election (2026), a historic result was recorded in the Tiruppattur Assembly Constituency, Sivaganga district, where TVK candidate R. Seenivasa Sethupathy defeated DMK candidate K. R. Periyakaruppan (four-time MLA and former minister) by a margin of one vote, marking the lowest victory margin in Tamil Nadu election history; after 30 rounds of counting, Sethupathy secured 83,010 votes while Periyakaruppan obtained 82,191 votes, and in postal votes, Sethupathy received 365 votes and Periyakaruppan 1,183 votes, leading to a final one-vote difference; due to the narrow margin, the result was officially declared at around 1:15 AM, after multiple re-verifications of EVM and postal votes, and with this result, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) increased its total tally to 108 seats.

Union Cabinet Decisions on Sugarcane FRP and Key Approvals

In the Union Cabinet meeting held on May 5, 2026 in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane for the 2026–27 season was increased by ₹10 to ₹365 per quintal based on a 10.25% recovery rate, representing 200.5% of production cost, and the FRP is fixed based on recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP); the Cabinet also approved a five-year cotton production plan (2026–27 to 2030–31) with an allocation of ₹5,659 crore to improve yield and quality, sanctioned a ₹1,570 crore ship repair facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, approved two semiconductor production units in Gujarat under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an investment of ₹3,936 crore generating 2,230 jobs at Dholera and Surat, cleared three Railway Ministry projects worth ₹23,437 crore, approved the Emergency Credit Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) allocation of ₹18,100 crore for airlines and MSMEs, and sanctioned an increase in the Supreme Court judges’ strength from 34 to 38, with provision for 4 additional posts, subject to a bill in Parliament, while the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 originally fixed the number at 10 (excluding Chief Justice) and was subsequently revised in 1960 (13), later to 17, 1986 (25), 2009 (30), and 2019 (33).

India Tops Global Remittances in 2024

According to the United Nations migration agency, India became the largest recipient of remittances in the world in 2024, receiving ₹12.8 lakh crore (137 billion US dollars) sent by Indians working abroad, and it is also the only country to receive over ₹9.4 lakh crore (100 billion US dollars) in remittances; India, Mexico, Philippines, and France ranked as the top four remittance-receiving countries in 2024, with India holding the first position continuously since 2010, when it received ₹5 lakh crore, increasing to ₹6.4 lakh crore in 2015, ₹7.8 lakh crore in 2020, and ₹12.8 lakh crore in 2024; in the South Asian region, remittance inflows to India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan led to a growth rate of 11.8% in 2024, while in terms of remittance outflows, the United States ranked first globally with ₹9.4 lakh crore, followed by Saudi Arabia (₹4.3 lakh crore), Switzerland (₹3.7 lakh crore), and Germany (₹2.2 lakh crore).

Defence Ministry Signs ₹1,476 Crore EW Systems Deal

The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹1,476 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of five ground-based mobile Electronic Warfare (EW) systems to strengthen the Indian Army’s capabilities in the electromagnetic domain, with the agreement signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, ensuring 72% indigenous content; these systems are designed to detect, intercept and disrupt enemy communications, radar networks and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) providing “soft kill” capability, and will be deployed along the western and northern borders with field formations, while their mobile nature enables operation within battle areas for both offensive and defensive roles, and they also support countering drones and loitering munitions by jamming control links and satellite navigation systems, thereby weakening enemy surveillance and air defence networks.

Increase in Supreme Court Judges and Key Cabinet Approvals

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 to increase the strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India) under Article 124(1) of the Constitution, marking the second increase since 2019, when the number was raised from 30 to 33; the Cabinet also approved support measures for agriculture, including allocation of ₹5,659.22 crore for cotton production under a mission to be implemented during 2026–27 to 2030–31, aligned with the 5F vision (Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign) and focusing on High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds, along with fixing the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane at ₹365 per quintal, with a provision of ₹338.3 per quintal for recovery below 9.5%; additionally, the Cabinet approved three railway multi-tracking infrastructure projects worth ₹23,437 crore across six states under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan to improve multi-modal connectivity and logistics efficiency.

Constitutional Provisions on Chief Minister’s Resignation After Electoral Defeat

In the context of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee faced defeat as her party secured 80 seats in the 294-member Assembly, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 207 seats, crossing the majority mark of 147; under the Constitution of India, a Chief Minister must enjoy the confidence of the Legislative Assembly, and as per Article 164, the Chief Minister and Council of Ministers hold office during the pleasure of the Governor, implying that loss of majority requires resignation, after which the Governor may invite the leader of the majority party or coalition to form the government; additionally, Article 172 provides for a five-year term of the State Legislative Assembly, but it does not protect a government that has lost majority support within that period.

ECLGS 5.0 Credit Support for MSMEs and Aviation Sector

The Government of India announced the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS 5.0) with an outlay of ₹18,000 crore to support the MSME and aviation sectors affected by the West Asia conflict, as stated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aiming to generate a total credit flow of ₹2.55 lakh crore, including ₹5,000 crore for the aviation sector; the scheme covers MSMEs, non-MSMEs, and scheduled passenger airlines with existing credit facilities as of March 31, 2026, providing 100% credit guarantee for non-MSMEs and 90% for MSMEs and aviation, with no guarantee fee, and allows additional credit up to 20% of peak working capital (maximum ₹100 crore), while for airlines it is up to ₹1,500 crore per borrower; the loan tenure is 5 years with 1-year moratorium for MSMEs and non-MSMEs and 7 years with 2-year moratorium for aviation, and is applicable to loans sanctioned up to March 31, 2027 under guidelines issued by the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company Limited (NCGTC); the ECLGS scheme, originally launched in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, has supported over 1.1 crore MSMEs with guarantees worth ₹3.7 lakh crore.

Cabinet Approval for New Semiconductor Units under ISM

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved two new semiconductor manufacturing units with a total investment of ₹3,936 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), increasing the total number of approved projects to 12 and the overall outlay to about ₹1.64 lakh crore. The projects include India’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display facility based on GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology and a semiconductor packaging facility, both to be set up in Gujarat. The projects are expected to generate employment for 2,230 skilled professionals. The Crystal Matrix Limited (CML) unit at Dholera will establish an integrated semiconductor fabrication and ATMP facility with an annual production capacity of 72,000 sq. meters of display panels and 24,000 sets of RGB GaN wafers, while Suchi Semicon (SSPL) will set up an OSAT facility at Surat with a capacity of 1,033.20 million chips per year. These projects aim to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem and support chip design capabilities involving 315 academic institutions and 104 start-ups.

Growth of RBI Retail Direct Platform

Retail investors are increasingly investing in government securities through the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Retail Direct (RBI-RD) platform, with the number of accounts rising by 54% from 2,35,256 on April 28, 2025 to 3,61,402 on April 27, 2026. Investments include Treasury Bills, Floating Rate Savings Bonds, Central Government Securities (G-Secs), and State Government Securities, with total primary market subscriptions increasing by 35% from ₹6,449 crore to ₹8,736 crore, traded volume rising by 295% from ₹2,322 crore to ₹9,167 crore, and total holdings growing by 50% from ₹2,283 crore to ₹3,425 crore. Returns on 10-year Central G-Secs (6.48%) and State G-Secs (around 7.70%) are higher compared to bank deposits such as State Bank of India fixed deposits (6.05%). The RBI Retail Direct platform provides sovereign-backed, zero-credit-risk investment options and operates through a fully digital and transparent framework. The RBI Retail Direct mobile application, launched two years ago, offers single sign-on access to primary and secondary markets, and the introduction of UPI mandate enables pre-authorisation of transactions in primary auctions.

Growth of Rooftop Solar under PM Surya Ghar Scheme

Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar installations in India doubled in FY 2025–26, with 21.2 lakh households benefiting compared to 10.8 lakh in FY 2024–25, increasing the total installations to over 32 lakh households. The scheme was launched in February 2024 with a target of 1 crore households and supports India’s goal of achieving 500 GW non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. In FY 2025–26, Maharashtra (5,15,009 households) recorded the highest installations, followed by Uttar Pradesh (4,34,082) and Gujarat (3,19,391), with these three states accounting for about 60% of total installations. In South India, Kerala (1,29,541) and Andhra Pradesh (97,347) led installations, while Punjab recorded installations in 6,460 households. States such as Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, and Nagaland showed significant growth from a low base, whereas Karnataka and Tamil Nadu recorded comparatively lower installations.

Cotton Productivity Mission Approved by Union Cabinet

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the Mission for Cotton Productivity with an outlay of ₹5,659.22 crore for a five-year period (2026–27 to 2030–31) to address issues such as declining growth, productivity, and quality in the cotton sector. The mission was proposed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget 2025. It aims to increase cotton lint productivity from 440 kg/ha to 755 kg/ha and achieve production of 498 lakh bales (170 kg each) by 2031, benefiting about 32 lakh farmers. The scheme includes promotion of Kasturi Cotton Bharat, reduction of trash content to below 2%, and encouragement of natural fibres such as flax, ramie, sisal, milkweed, bamboo, and banana. The mission will be implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and the Ministry of Textiles, involving institutions like the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and All India Coordinated Research Project on Cotton (AICRP) centres in State Agricultural Universities. It aligns with the government’s 5F vision (Farm, Fibre, Factory, Fashion, Foreign). Data show cotton production declined from 297.24 lakh bales (2024–25) to 290.91 lakh bales (2025–26) despite area stagnation at 114.8 lakh hectares, with factors like pink bollworm (PBW) and crop shifts affecting cultivation.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder of Biocon, has named her niece Claire Mazumdar as her successor, indicating a phased leadership transition while continuing in her role. Claire Mazumdar (37) is currently the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bicara Therapeutics, a Boston-based oncology company incubated by Biocon, established in 2020. AI-Based Predictive Policing Initiative by Delhi Police

The Delhi Police has launched a modernisation initiative in which senior officers of DCP rank and above with more than 10 years of service will adopt 100 police stations to implement reforms. The initiative follows directions given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a conference of Directors General and Inspectors General of Police. The programme focuses on AI-based predictive policing to identify crime hotspots and improve deployment of patrols and personnel. It also includes integration of databases such as Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) and Crime Kundali, expansion of CCTV networks with facial recognition, and use of drones and body-worn cameras. The initiative aims to improve tracking of missing children, strengthen cyber-crime response, and enhance policing efficiency. Police stations will coordinate with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and central agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and National Investigation Agency (NIA), and will be upgraded into smart facilities with digital records and citizen service centres.

Gujarat Ship Repair Facility and Railway Multitracking Projects Approved

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the establishment of a ship repair facility at Vadinar, Gujarat at a cost of ₹1,570 crore, to be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). The facility will include two floating dry docks (FDDs) of 300 metres each, with a natural water depth of over 14 metres, and will have the capacity to repair 34 ships annually, including large vessels of 250 metres and above. The project is expected to capture 5–6% of the ship repair market, including domestic and international vessels, and will provide connectivity to major ports such as Deendayal Port (Kandla), Mundra Port, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Along with this, the CCEA also approved multitracking of three railway sections across 19 districts in 6 states with an investment of ₹23,437 crore to reduce congestion and improve rail capacity.

2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Election: Highest and Lowest Victory Margins

In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election, the lowest victory margin was recorded in Tirupattur, where Seenivasa Sethupathy R. (TVK) defeated K.R. Periyakaruppan (DMK) by 1 vote. Other low margins include Veppanahalli, where P.S. Srinivasan (DMK) won by 138 votes, Kanniyakumari, where Thalavai Sundaram N. (AIADMK) won by 214 votes, Polur, where R. Abishek (TVK) won by 227 votes, Tirukkoyilur, where S. Palanisamy (AIADMK) won by 285 votes, and Paramathi-Velur, where S. Sekar (AIADMK) won by 308 votes. The highest victory margin was recorded in Edappadi, where Edappadi K. Palaniswami (AIADMK) won by 98,110 votes. Other high margins include Sholinganallur, where ECR P. Saravanan (TVK) won by 96,780 votes, Madhavaram, where M.L. Vijayprabhu (TVK) won by 94,985 votes, Avadi, where R. Ramesh Kumar (TVK) won by 76,311 votes, Salem (West), where S. Lakshmanan (TVK) won by 74,867 votes, and Poonamallee, where R. Prakasam (TVK) won by 72,740 votes.

Amendment to Make Insult to Vande Mataram Punishable

The Union Cabinet approved an amendment to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971 to make insulting or obstructing the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ a punishable offence. At present, the Act provides punishment for insulting the National Anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’, the National Flag, and the Constitution of India, with penalties including imprisonment up to 3 years or fine or both. The national song ‘Vande Mataram’ was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and published in the novel ‘Anandamath’ in the early 1880s, and in 1937, leaders of the Indian National Congress decided to use its first two stanzas in official gatherings, later receiving the status of National Song under the Constitution. The Union Home Ministry had earlier issued guidelines on February 6 stating that all six stanzas of the song, lasting over three minutes, should be played or sung at official events, with precedence when performed along with the National Anthem.

India–Jamaica Bilateral Engagement

During a visit to the Caribbean, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness in Kingston on May 5, 2026, as part of a nine-day visit to Jamaica, Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, and held discussions on India–Jamaica relations covering political, economic and people-to-people cooperation; he also met Jamaica Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith and other officials, and reviewed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in areas such as digital transformation, cultural exchange, sports, and digital transactions; under the India–Jamaica Development Partnership Fund, a rural livelihood project in Kitson Town was completed with Indian assistance of 1 million US dollars, benefiting over 200 people; Jamaica supported India’s candidature for non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council for 2028–29; financial assistance of 2 million Jamaican dollars was announced for Indian Heritage Day, marking 181 years of Indian arrival in Jamaica, and the country has around 70,000 people of Indian origin, whose ancestors migrated as indentured labourers between 1845 and 1917 mainly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, along with migrants from South India.

During a nine-day visit to Jamaica, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Jamaica Foreign Minister Kamina J. Smith in Kingston and held discussions on India–Jamaica bilateral relations, following which Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the fields of digital transformation, culture, sports, and digital financial transactions were reviewed for implementation; Jamaica is identified as a trade gateway to the Caribbean region, and a rural livelihood project in Kitson Town was completed with Indian assistance; India also provided 30 dialysis machines, 40 fishing boats, and 200 GPS devices to storm-affected Jamaica on humanitarian grounds, and Jamaica extended support for India’s candidature as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2028–29.

WHO on Hantavirus Transmission on Cruise Ship

The World Health Organization (WHO) on May 5 reported suspected rare human-to-human transmission of Hantavirus among close contacts on a cruise ship with seven confirmed or suspected cases, while reiterating that the disease is usually spread through contact with infected rodents and poses low risk to the general public. The outbreak occurred on the Dutch-flagged MV Hondus, operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, where a Dutch couple and a German national died, and a British national was evacuated to South Africa for intensive care. Two crew members required urgent medical treatment and another suspected case reported mild symptoms. The ship was stationed near Cape Verde in West Africa, and authorities did not permit passengers to disembark, while the Netherlands Foreign Ministry initiated medical evacuation of affected individuals.

Yash Khandagale wins Silver at World Junior Weightlifting 2026

At the World Junior Weightlifting Championships 2026 held in Ismailia, Egypt, Yash Khandagale won the silver medal in the men’s 71 kg category by lifting a total of 309 kg; he lifted 140 kg in Snatch and 169 kg in Clean and Jerk, securing silver and bronze medals in the respective segments, while Albert Ian Delos Santos (Philippines) won the gold medal with 326 kg, and Jimmy Lopez (Ecuador) secured the bronze medal with 301 kg.

Kumar Mangalam Birla Appointed Chairman of Vodafone Idea

Kumar Mangalam Birla was appointed as the Non-Executive Chairman of Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) with effect from May 5, 2026, following the resignation of former Chairman Ravinder Takkar. The decision was approved by the Board of Directors of Vodafone Idea during a meeting, as stated in an official exchange filing. Prior to this appointment, Kumar Mangalam Birla served as a Non-Executive Director on the board and is also the Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group. Ravinder Takkar, after stepping down as Chairman, will continue as the Non-Executive Vice-Chairman of the company. Earlier, Birla increased his stake in Vodafone Idea by purchasing 2.21 crore shares on January 30 and 1.88 crore shares on February 1, 2026, at a price of ₹11.13 per share.
