India–Italy Defence Cooperation

India and Rajnath Singh and Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto held talks in New Delhi on April 30, 2026, and agreed to formulate industrial rules for the joint production of military equipment under Atmanirbhar Bharat and Italy’s defence cooperation initiative, and also discussed the Bilateral Defence Cooperation Plan 2026–2027 to enhance joint military operations, along with information exchange through the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), while the Italian minister paid tribute at the National War Memorial and inspected the tri-services guard of honour.

USA Returns 657 Antiquities to India

The United States returned 657 ancient idols and antiquities stolen from India, valued at ₹133 crore, and the handover took place on April 28, 2026 in New York, where Indian Consular Officer Rajalakshmi Kadam received them, while these artifacts were smuggled from India to the USA over different periods by individuals including Subhash Kapoor and Nancy Wiener, and this forms part of a larger recovery effort in which over 6,200 cultural objects have been recovered in the USA and more than 5,900 artifacts returned to 36 countries, including a notable artifact such as the Avalokiteshvara bronze idol stolen in 1982 from the Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum, with the returned antiquities to be brought back to India soon.

Buddha Relics Exhibition in Ladakh

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, visited Leh on April 30, 2026, and held a meeting with V. K. Saxena and officials to ensure public access to the sacred relics of Gautama Buddha for two weeks, and the relics were brought from Piprahwa (ancient Kapilvastu) in Indian Air Force aircraft, and will be displayed at Jive Tsal, Choglamsar from May 2 to May 10, 2026, coinciding with Buddha Purnima, and the relics are ancient archaeological findings discovered near the Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh.

QR Code System at Vote Counting Centres

The Election Commission of India introduced a QR code-based identity card system on April 30, 2026 in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and the Puducherry to prevent unauthorized entry into vote counting centres, covering Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu (234 constituencies), Kerala (140), West Bengal (294), Assam (126), and Puducherry (30) along with by-elections in 7 constituencies across 5 states including Karnataka, with vote counting scheduled on May 4, 2026, and implementing a three-tier verification system where photo identity cards issued by Returning Officers are checked at two levels and QR code scanning at the third security layer near counting rooms, applicable to authorized personnel such as Returning Officers, Assistant Officers, counting staff, technical staff, candidates, and agents, while this system is part of more than 30 initiatives taken in the past one year and will be implemented in future elections to ensure security, transparency, and efficiency in the counting process.

Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Train Service

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express on April 30, 2026 at Srinagar, introducing the first direct train service connecting Jammu and Srinagar, the twin capitals of Jammu and Kashmir, with 20 coaches, covering a distance of 267 km and reducing travel time to 5 hours, and the service will commence for public use from May 2, 2026, operating 6 days a week (except Tuesday), while the earlier Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service was inaugurated by Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025 and has now been extended to Jammu, and the railway development project connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India was undertaken at a cost of ₹43,780 crore, with milestones including the first train in Kashmir Valley (October 2008), first electric train (February 2024), and Jammu Railway Division (January 2025).

PRAGATI Multinational Military Exercise

The Indian Army will conduct the first edition of Exercise PRAGATI (Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region) in Meghalaya from May 18 to 31, 2026 at Umroi Foreign Training Node, involving around a dozen countries under India’s Act East Policy, with participation from neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asian countries including Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos, and the exercise is linked to regional defence cooperation under platforms like ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus), focusing on counter-terrorism, jungle warfare, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) and interoperability among participating armies, while India will also conduct the second edition of the bilateral CINBAX exercise with Cambodia, and the event will include a two-day defence exhibition showcasing indigenous defence technologies, with Philippines being the first foreign buyer of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Vietnam emerging as a key prospective partner.

SVAMITVA Scheme and Rural Property Ownership

The SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) Scheme, launched in April 2020, aims to map rural inhabited lands using drone-based surveys and provide legal property ownership records, with an initial allocation of ₹472 crore for five years, later increased to ₹576 crore and extended till September 2026, and a study by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad found that the scheme improved credit access for residential properties, increased formalisation of land ownership and strengthened Gram Panchayat finances, with residential land registrations rising and agricultural land mutations declining, while loan amounts for surveyed residential properties increased by ₹22,129 per parcel annually, residential land mutations increased by 6.2% annually in 42,000 villages of Madhya Pradesh, agricultural land mutations declined by 4.87%, and in Maharashtra (32 districts between 2015–2025) property tax revenue increased by 4.71% (₹10,284 per panchayat annually) and other local taxes by 7.57%, while bank data from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra showed a 6.5% increase in credit, and the scheme uses GPS-based mapping and drones to create property records for rural habitation areas.

India’s First Green Methanol Plant in Kandla

India’s first green methanol production plant will use Prosopis juliflora, an invasive species, as feedstock for producing marine fuel. The plant will be set up at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat, with a production capacity of 5 tonnes per day. Prosopis juliflora, a Mexican-origin shrub, was introduced by the British in the 1920s and later by the Gujarat Forest Department in 1961 to control desertification in the Rann of Kutch. The project is being built by Thermax Energy (Pune) using gasification technology from Ankur Scientific (Vadodara) and will be owned by the port authority. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s policy to develop green ports along the western coast and supports compliance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations. Green methanol, produced from biomass, can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 95% and NOx emissions by up to 80%, and eliminate sulphur oxides and particulate matter. The plant can also use agricultural residues such as bagasse and cotton stalks.

Tamil Nadu Tops Marine Fish Production

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute reported on April 30, 2026 from Kochi that Tamil Nadu ranked first in marine fish production in 2025 with 6.85 lakh tonnes, surpassing Gujarat, while India’s total marine fish production reached 35.7 lakh tonnes in 2025, showing a 3% growth over 2024, with Gujarat moving to second place due to a 15% decline, and Kerala ranking third with 6.24 lakh tonnes and 2% growth, while Karnataka recorded 44% growth and Maharashtra recorded 18% growth, and the most caught fish varieties in 2025 were Mackerel (2.70 lakh tonnes), Cephalopods (2.57 lakh tonnes), and Oil Sardines (2.53 lakh tonnes), with Kerala contributing 17% share to the total marine production of India.

Sterilisation Trends in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, sterilisation data for the 2025–26 financial year shows a significant gender disparity, with 2.15 lakh female sterilisation procedures (tubectomies) compared to only 426 male sterilisation procedures (No-Scalpel Vasectomy – NSV), indicating a 0.2% male participation rate (998:2 ratio), while NSV numbers increased from 863 in 2021–22 to 1,304 in 2022–23 and peaked at 1,357 in 2023–24, but declined to 659 in 2024–25 and further to 426 in 2025–26, marking a 35% decline within one year, and female sterilisation numbers also declined from 2,54,702 in 2023–24 to 2,27,438 in 2024–25 and 2,15,825 in 2025–26, reflecting an overall downward trend.

Chhattisgarh Resolution on 33% Women Reservation

In Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai moved a resolution in the State Legislative Assembly to immediately implement the 33% reservation for women, following the defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill and Delimitation Bill in the Lok Sabha, during a one-day special session where a 4-hour debate was held, and Opposition Leader Charan Das Mahant proposed providing 33% reservation within the existing strength of MPs, which was not permitted by Speaker Raman Singh, while a similar resolution demanding immediate implementation of women’s reservation was also passed in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

Bihar Renames Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park

In Bihar, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary chaired a cabinet meeting in Patna in which it was decided to rename the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, established in 1973 over 153 acres, as Patna Biological Park, and also to rename the Sanjay Gandhi Dairy Technology Centre, established in 1980, as Bihar State Dairy Technology Centre, while the park houses over 800 animals of 110 species, and a total of 61 decisions were taken in the cabinet meeting, with the original names linked to Sanjay Gandhi, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

RBI Credit Card Rules – 3-Day Grace Period

The Reserve Bank of India has introduced new rules for credit card payments, providing a 3-day grace period beyond the due date mentioned in the bill, during which no penalty fee will be charged, and the late payment fee will be calculated only on the remaining outstanding amount instead of the total amount, while failure to pay even after the grace period will be treated as overdue and may affect the credit score, and these new regulations will come into effect from April 1, 2027.

SEBI Fine on Axis Trustee Services

The Securities and Exchange Board of India imposed a penalty of ₹10 lakh on Axis Trustee Services Ltd for disclosure and governance lapses related to Embassy Office Parks REIT, which is India’s first publicly listed Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT), based on a case linked to the National Financial Reporting Authority order dated August 19, 2024, in which Aravind Maiya, former CEO of Embassy Office Parks Management Services Pvt Ltd, was penalised ₹50 lakh and debarred from audit functions for 10 years for professional misconduct, and SEBI noted that although the trustee was informed on August 20, 2024, the disclosure to unitholders was delayed by 53 days, and also observed that the trustee failed to independently assess the ‘fit and proper person’ criteria despite regulatory directions, while Embassy Office Parks REIT is sponsored by Embassy Group and Blackstone.

MuleHunter AI Tool by RBI for Cyber Fraud Prevention

M. Nagaraju, Financial Services Secretary, urged banks to adopt ‘MuleHunter’, an Artificial Intelligence tool developed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), for timely identification and prevention of mule accounts involved in financial cyber frauds. The direction was given on Thursday during a meeting with the State Level Bankers’ Committee (SLBC). He also advised coordination with State Police Authorities and emphasized the need for increased public awareness initiatives on cyber financial fraud prevention, as stated by the Department of Financial Services through a post on X platform.

Death of Scientist J. Craig Venter

J. Craig Venter, a scientist and entrepreneur known for his role in decoding the human genome, died at the age of 79 in San Diego on Wednesday. His death was announced by the J. Craig Venter Institute, a nonprofit research organization founded by him and based in San Diego and Rockville, Maryland. He had been recently hospitalized due to side effects from cancer treatment. In the 1990s, he entered the race to decode the human genome, competing with the Human Genome Project, a $3 billion government program, and aimed to complete the task using a faster method.

Former MRF Director Ramarathnam Srinivasan Passes Away

Ramarathnam Srinivasan, former Director of Corporate Planning and Diversification at MRF Limited, passed away at the age of 89 in Mysuru on Thursday. He completed his schooling at P.S. High School, Chennai, earned a B.Sc. from Vivekananda College, Chennai, and a B.Tech from Annamalai University, and joined MRF Limited in the early 1960s. He served in various positions in the company and retired in 2003. He contributed to the development of the MRF Pace Foundation during its early years and worked with Dennis Lillee and T.A. Sekhar. He was the grandson of Kasturi Gopalan, former Publisher of The Hindu.
