Indian Economy Growth Forecast – UN ESCAP Report (2026)

A report released by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on April 21, 2026, in New York projected that the Indian economy will grow by 6.4% in 2026 and 6.6% in 2027, while inflation is estimated at 4.4% in 2026 and 4.3% in 2027; the report noted that South and Southeast Asia’s growth increased from 5.2% in 2024 to 5.4% in 2025, with India’s strong growth being a key driver, and highlighted that India’s economy grew by 7.4% in 2025 due to strong consumption and reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates, while the imposition of a 50% tariff by the United States on Indian goods in August 2025 led to a decline in exports and moderated economic activity, though the services sector remained a major contributor to growth.

Ember Global Electricity Review 2026 – Renewables Surpass Coal

The Ember Global Electricity Review 2026, released on April 22, 2026, reported that in 2025 renewable energy reached a record 33.8% share of global electricity generation, surpassing coal (33.0%) for the first time in over a century, while solar energy accounted for about 75% of the growth in global electricity demand, and fossil fuel-based generation declined by 0.2%, with China contributing more than half of global solar expansion and achieving 22% share from solar and wind in its power mix; in India, fossil fuel power generation declined by 3.3%, renewable generation increased by 24%, solar energy became the largest clean energy source surpassing hydropower, and India installed 38 GW solar capacity, exceeding the United States for the first time, with India and China jointly playing a key role in limiting global fossil fuel power growth.

India Food Grain Buffer Stock – Three Times Norm

Government of India reported that the country’s food grain stock is about three times higher than the prescribed buffer norms, with approximately 222 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of wheat and 380 LMT of rice, totaling around 602 LMT, and agricultural exports increased from $34.5 billion in FY20 to $51.1 billion in FY25 with processed food share at 20.4%, while horticulture production reached 362.08 million tonnes, exceeding foodgrain output, and India ranks first globally in pulses and millets production and second in rice, wheat, fruits and vegetables, as well as first in spices and coconut and second in sugarcane, cotton and tea, and the buffer stock norms are fixed quarterly by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) to ensure food security, price stabilization, and supply through the Public Distribution System (PDS).

IKEA–Ekart Logistics Partnership in Chennai

Ekart, a third-party logistics company, has partnered with IKEA, a global home furnishing brand, for last-mile logistics in Chennai, under which orders placed by customers in Chennai through IKEA’s website and mobile application will be delivered using Ekart’s 100% electric vehicle (EV) fleet, and Chennai becomes the second major city after Delhi-NCR (2025) where Ekart manages IKEA deliveries, with services including delivery within 48 hours and real-time tracking facility.

FIVB Action – Recognition of Volleyball Federation of India Revoked

The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the world governing body for volleyball, on Tuesday revoked the recognition of the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI) with immediate effect for violation of legal and administrative requirements, and the decision came after issues in the national training camp where two senior players withdrew citing problems in facilities and selection, following which FIVB constituted a steering committee comprising representatives from the FIVB and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to safeguard the sport in India and ensure athlete welfare.

India’s 95th Grandmaster – Aronyak Ghosh

Aronyak Ghosh, a 22-year-old chess player from Kolkata, became India’s 95th Grandmaster (GM) after sharing the top position at the Bangkok Chess Club Open, having secured the required three GM norms, including his first in Spain in 2023 and second in 2024, and currently holds an Elo rating of 2533 with a target to reach 2600 rating, while his early training and guidance were provided by his father Mrinal Ghosh, a chess player and arbiter, and he also acknowledged the achievement of R. Vaishali, who won the Candidates Tournament.

Tim Cook, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple, will step down from his position on September 1, 2026, after serving since 2011 following Steve Jobs, and he will continue as the Executive Chairman of Apple, while John Ternus, currently the Head of Hardware Engineering at Apple, will assume the role of CEO, with the decision approved unanimously by the Apple Board of Directors; during his tenure, Apple’s market value increased from $350 billion to $4 trillion, and the company expanded its product and service portfolio with Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro, Apple Music, and Apple TV+, while John Ternus, associated with Apple since 2001, has contributed to key products such as iPhone, iPad, Mac, and AirPods.

India–USA Defence Talks – Army Chiefs Meeting in Hawaii

The Chief of the Army Staff of India, General Upendra Dwivedi, held high-level talks with General Ronald P. The Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit (IAFS 2026) is scheduled to be held in New Delhi in late May 2026, with key agenda areas including education, capacity building, defence cooperation, and expansion of diplomatic relations, and the plans for the summit will be presented by the External Affairs Minister S. Amazon–Anthropic AI Investment Deal

Amazon has announced an investment of about $25 billion in the AI company Anthropic, which develops the ‘Claude’ AI technology, with an initial investment of $5 billion and up to $20 billion linked to commercial milestones, taking Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic to $13 billion; as part of the agreement, Anthropic will invest over $100 billion over the next decade in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and secure up to 5GW power capacity to operate its AI systems, using Amazon’s chips such as Graviton (CPU) and Trainium (AI accelerator), and the collaboration also enables AWS customers to access the Claude AI platform, while Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are key personalities associated with this development.

India Start-up Ecosystem FY26

According to the Tracxn Geo Annual Report, India’s start-up ecosystem in FY26 (2025–26) raised $11.7 billion through 1,632 funding rounds, with the number of deals declining by 34% while total funding fell by only 18% from $14.3 billion, indicating larger investments in fewer deals; early-stage funding increased by 33% to $4.8 billion, whereas late-stage funding declined by 38%, and sectors such as Enterprise Applications ($3.6 billion), FinTech ($2.4 billion), and Retail ($2.4 billion) led investments, while 47 technology companies launched Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), the highest in a decade, including Lenskart ($7.9 billion market cap), Groww ($7 billion), Meesho ($5.6 billion), and Physics Wallah ($3.6 billion), and the addition of six new unicorns—Neysa, Raise, Navi, Jumbotail, JSW One MSME, and Juspay— increased India’s total unicorn count to 125, making it the third largest globally.

Salween River – Arsenic Contamination

Arsenic contamination at dangerous levels has been detected in the Salween River, which is known as ‘Nu’ in China and ‘Thanlwin’ in Myanmar, and is the second longest river in Southeast Asia after the Mekong River, as well as the longest undammed river in Southeast Asia, originating from the Tangula Mountains in the Tibetan Plateau and draining into the Gulf of Martaban in the Andaman Sea, with its basin shared by China (53%), Myanmar (42%), and Thailand (5%), and major tributaries including Moei, Pang, Teng, Pawn, Hka, and Hsim.

Aurobindo Pharma Share Buyback

Aurobindo Pharma, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company, will commence a ₹800 crore share buyback from April 23 to April 29, 2026, through the tender offer method, involving about 54.23 lakh shares at a price of ₹1,475 per share, with eligible institutional investors determined earlier, and as per the company’s financial position at the end of FY 2025–26, the buyback represents 3.93% on a standalone basis and 2.62% on a consolidated basis, with no change in the management structure of the company.

AI-Generated Content Regulations

The Union Government of India has proposed stricter regulations for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated content by amending the Information Technology (IT) Rules, mandating that all AI-generated content must carry clear and continuous labels indicating that it is synthetically created throughout its display duration, as notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), which has also proposed to bring independent news creators under regulatory oversight and ensure compliance with government advisories; the deadline for stakeholder feedback on the draft rules has been extended from April 29 to May 7, 2026, and earlier the government had mandated social media platforms such as YouTube and X to remove unlawful content within three hours, aiming to curb the misuse of AI technology in creating fake, deceptive, and obscene content.

Raise Financial Acquires Stratzy – Algo Trading Expansion

On April 2026, Raise Financial Services, which operates the ‘Dhan’ stock trading platform, acquired the algorithmic trading and investing platform Stratzy through a cash-and-stock deal to strengthen its presence in the capital markets ecosystem, with the objective of expanding its capabilities in algorithmic trading and offering rule-based investment strategies to a wider user base, while Stratzy, an exchange-registered algo-trading platform, provides over 100 approved multi-asset algorithms across equities, indices, futures and options, and commodities.

Telangana–Norway Joint Working Group Proposal

The Telangana Government has proposed the formation of a Joint Working Group with Norway to boost investment cooperation, as announced during a meeting held in Hyderabad between Telangana IT & Industries Minister D. Supreme Court on Disabled-Friendly Prisons – High-Powered Committee

The Supreme Court of India directed a high-powered committee chaired by former Justice S. According to major climate models including the Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, El Nino is likely to develop between May and July 2026 due to continued warming in the tropical Pacific Ocean, with uncertainty linked to ocean–atmosphere coupling, and the El Nino–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system is currently in a neutral phase but showing warming trends, as indicated by the Nino3.4 index at -0.27°C (week ending April 12), while the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) has declined to minus 7.7, reflecting changing pressure patterns, and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) remains neutral at +0.06°C with a possibility of turning positive phase in winter and spring, which may influence the Indian monsoon, and the APEC Climate Center forecasts above-normal rainfall over India.

RBI Digital Payments E-Mandate Framework 2026

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the “Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026” to regulate recurring online payments, introducing a one-time registration process with Additional Factor Authentication (AFA) for customers, and mandating pre-transaction notification at least 24 hours before debit, while transactions up to ₹15,000 are allowed without AFA and amounts above require AFA, with special exemption allowing payments up to ₹1,00,000 per transaction without AFA for insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions, and credit card bills, and the framework also states that no charges should be levied for using the e-mandate facility, customers must be allowed to modify or cancel e-mandates anytime, and FASTag and National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) auto-replenishment transactions are exempt from pre-notification, with institutions required to establish a grievance redressal mechanism and follow rules to limit customer liability for unauthorized transactions.
