Air Force Chief A.P. Singh Flies in U.S. F-15 Fighter Jet

Indian Air Force Chief A.P. Singh visited the United States to hold discussions and procure defence equipment. During the visit, he held consultations with officials of the U.S. Department of Defense. On the 9th, he visited the Nellis Air Force Base in the state of Florida and flew in a Boeing F-15 Eagle-2 fighter jet of the U.S. Air Force. He was accompanied by Major Matthew Persen and other officials. During the visit, A.P. Singh also met Brigadier General David C. Epperson of the U.S. Air Force. Air Commodore Yagyapal Dev of the Indian Air Force accompanied him during this visit.

Union Cabinet Approves Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool and Railway Projects

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the creation of a domestic insurance pool named “Bharat Maritime Insurance Pool” with a fund of ₹12,980 crore to ensure continuous maritime insurance protection. The scheme aims to provide sovereign guarantee for ships flying the Indian flag or under Indian control, as well as cargo ships operating to and from Indian ports, covering risks such as ship hull damage, machinery issues, cargo loss, and war-related risks. The decision follows disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict, which affected the movement of Indian cargo ships and exports. In addition, the Cabinet approved two multi-track railway projects worth ₹24,815 crore in Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. The projects include construction of 3rd and 4th railway lines over 403 km from Ghaziabad to Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh and 198 km from Rajahmundry to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, aimed at improving rail transport connectivity.

Parliament Passes Key Bills

The Parliament of India passed several important bills, including the Union Budget and Appropriation Bill, the Central Armed Police Forces (General Administration) Bill, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill-2026 recognizing Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh, and the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill. The Companies (Amendment) Bill was referred to a Parliamentary Committee for further examination.

K.S. Somasekhar Appointed as Rajya Sabha Secretary

K.S. Somasekhar has been appointed as the Secretary of the Rajya Sabha by Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan. He previously served as Additional Secretary in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat and joined the Secretariat service in 1993. With over 30 years of parliamentary experience, he has worked in roles such as Director, Joint Secretary, and Additional Secretary in areas including Parliamentary Standing Committees and Administration, and earlier served in the Government of Karnataka. He has represented India in international parliamentary forums, received training in parliamentary procedures in the United Kingdom and the European Union, and participated in Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meetings in Geneva. He holds a PhD in Literature and is proficient in Kannada, Hindi, English, Telugu, and Tamil. In the Indian Parliament, the Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha act as the administrative heads, appointed by the Chairman of Rajya Sabha and the Speaker of Lok Sabha respectively, and are usually selected from within the Parliamentary Secretariat services based on experience.

UltraTech Cement Expands Capacity to 200 Million Tons

UltraTech Cement, part of the Aditya Birla Group, has increased its annual production capacity to 20 crore tons (200 million tons) by opening three new plants in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Andhra Pradesh. With this expansion, UltraTech has become the world’s largest cement producer outside China. The company’s cement has been used in major infrastructure projects such as the Central Vista Project, the New Parliament Building, and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. UltraTech also operates in countries including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sri Lanka. In India, the Adani Group is the second-largest cement producer with a capacity of 10.9 crore tons. The company has set a target to increase its production capacity to 24 crore tons with an investment of ₹16,000 crore by the next financial year.

Union Cabinet Approves 2% Increase in Dearness Allowance

The Union Cabinet approved a 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for Central Government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners, effective from January 1. The increase raises the existing rate from 58% of basic pay/pension by an additional 2%. The total financial impact on the government exchequer is ₹6,791.24 crore. This decision will benefit about 50.46 lakh government employees and 68.27 lakh pensioners. The revision is based on the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

Meta to Lay Off 16,000 Employees Due to AI Technology

Meta, headquartered in Menlo Park, California, USA, has decided to lay off 16,000 employees due to the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The company operates platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram and currently employs around 79,000 people. The layoffs will be carried out in phases, with 8,000 employees to be laid off in May as part of the first phase, accounting for about 20% of the workforce. Earlier, 21,000 employees were laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar downsizing trends are seen globally, where over 1.5 lakh people lost jobs last year, and in the current year, 95 multinational companies, including Oracle and Amazon, have initiated layoffs, resulting in about 80,000 job losses in recent months. Oracle has planned to lay off 30,000 employees, with 12,000 already removed, while Amazon has laid off 16,000 employees. United Parcel Service (UPS), USA plans to lay off 30,000 employees, and the BBC (United Kingdom), with 21,500 employees, plans to lay off 2,000 employees due to AI adoption.

Australia-Japan Defense Deal for Mogami-Class Warships

Australia signed a $7.175 billion defense agreement with Japan to strengthen its navy by procuring 11 Mogami-class warships. The agreement was signed aboard the JS Kumano, a Mogami-class warship of the Japanese Navy, in the presence of Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. Under the deal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Japan) will manufacture and deliver 3 warships within 3 years, while the remaining 8 warships will be built domestically in Western Australia. The Mogami-class ships were selected over Germany’s Meko A-200 class ships and will replace Australia’s Anzac-class warships. These ships are designed to counter modern missile and drone attacks, and can be operated with 92 sailors, which is half the crew required for existing Anzac-class ships. The vessels are equipped with helicopter landing decks, surface-to-air missiles, and anti-ship missiles, enhancing security in the Indo-Pacific region.

Israel Establishes ‘Yellow Line’ in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) established a “Yellow Line” boundary in southern Lebanon to demarcate operational areas during the ongoing conflict. The IDF conducted strikes against suspected militants approaching its forces near this line despite a ceasefire agreement. This marks the first reference to such a boundary in Lebanon after the ceasefire. A similar “Yellow Line” has been in place in Gaza since October 10, dividing the region into areas under Israeli military control and Hamas control. Israel and Lebanon agreed to a 10-day ceasefire to address the conflict involving the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has emphasized efforts to ensure the ceasefire, secure the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and address border disputes.

Coventry City Promoted to Premier League After 25 Years

Coventry City secured promotion to the Premier League after a 1-1 draw against Blackburn in the Championship under head coach Frank Lampard, ending a 25-year gap since 2001. The team achieved automatic promotion with this result, needing only one point, and confirmed qualification with three matches remaining. In the match, Ryoya Morishita scored for Blackburn in the 54th minute, while Bobby Thomas equalised in the 84th minute for Coventry. The club had last been promoted to the top tier in 1967, and after relegation in 2001, it had dropped to the fourth tier before returning to the Premier League.

Sharvaanica Wins FIDE World Rapid U-12 Chess Title

India’s A.S. Sharvaanica won the Under-12 Girls title at the FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship held in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia. The 11-year-old and Woman Candidate Master (WCM) secured the title with 10 wins and 1 draw, finishing with 10.5 points, and confirmed the championship with two rounds remaining. She defeated higher-rated Ema Jaksa (Slovenia) in the ninth round and drew with Daria Kravchuk (Ukraine). This marks her second World Rapid title, having earlier won the Under-10 gold medal in 2024.

CMRL Imposes Fine for Mobile Noise in Metro Trains

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that passengers using mobile phones without headphones, such as playing music or watching videos loudly, will face a fine of up to ₹500. This action is based on Section 59 of the Metro Railway (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002, which treats causing nuisance or discomfort to fellow passengers as a punishable offence. The rule applies to both metro trains and station premises, and violations such as loud conversations and creating excessive noise through mobile usage will attract penalties. Authorised officials, including the Pink Squad, Quick Response Team, and CMRL authorities, are empowered to impose fines and remove offenders from the premises if necessary.

TN Plans Air Freight Village near Parandur Airport

The Tamil Nadu Government is planning to establish an Air Freight Village near the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport to develop a dedicated cargo ecosystem alongside its second Aviation Hub. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) has initiated a study to assess the feasibility and design of the project, which will integrate logistics, warehousing, and allied services to support air cargo operations. The project is expected to require around 150 acres of land in phases and is part of the City Logistics Plan under preparation. Once operational, the Parandur Airport is expected to handle a significant share of international passenger and freight traffic, and a portion of EXIM (Export-Import) air cargo currently handled by Chennai International Airport may be shifted. The facility will include zones for warehousing, Air Freight Station (AFS) consolidation, packaging, and logistics operations, aiming to strengthen the supply chain for high-value sectors such as electronics, automobile components, semiconductors, and EV parts.

Karnataka Introduces AIB-Based Alcohol Taxation

Karnataka Government issued a draft notification to amend the Karnataka Excise (Excise Duties and Fees) Rules, 1968, introducing an Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB) based taxation system, becoming the first state in India to adopt this model. The new system replaces the existing volume-based taxation (per bulk litre) method and will be implemented in phases. Under this structure, the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of alcohol in the first four excise slabs (around 42.8% alcohol content) is expected to increase, while prices of premium liquor such as Scotch (40% alcohol) may decrease, and taxes on mild beer (below 5% alcohol) may be reduced. The first four slabs contribute about 80% of excise revenue, and the new system is expected to increase prices in these slabs by at least 20%.
