10-Day Ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon Announced

U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, effective from midnight, following discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The ceasefire is linked to the two-week U.S.-Iran ceasefire announced on April 8, and its extension to Lebanon was a key demand of Iran. The agreement includes the participation of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, while Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the disarmament of Hezbollah is a precondition and that Israel will maintain a 10 km security zone in southern Lebanon. Hezbollah lawmaker Ibrahim al-Moussawi indicated that the group would adhere to the ceasefire if Israeli attacks cease.

Indo-Bhutan Joint Customs Meeting and Operation Numkhor

The Indo-Bhutan Joint Customs Group meeting is scheduled to be held in Munnar, Kerala, on April 20 and 21, with a Bhutan Customs delegation visiting from April 20 to 23. The meeting will focus on Operation Numkhor, a nationwide crackdown on the smuggling of premium second-hand vehicles through Bhutan and forged registration rackets involving Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) officials. The operation was launched by the Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Kochi, on September 23, 2025, with State-wide raids. During the operation, 39 vehicles were seized on the first day, followed by 15 more vehicles, including four seized last week. The issue was also discussed in Home Secretary-level talks between India and Bhutan in October 2025, and the Central GST Department has initiated an investigation into the matter.

EU Plans Expansion of CBAM to 180 More Products by 2028

The European Union (EU) plans to expand the scope of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) by including 180 additional products from January 2028. This proposal has been recommended by the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Climate and Food Safety and put forward by the European Commission after the CBAM transitional phase (2023–2025). The expansion will include steel- and aluminium-intensive downstream products such as fabricated metal products, tubes, pipes, fasteners, structural components, machinery parts, and aluminium containers. Currently, CBAM applies to imports of iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, hydrogen, electricity, and selected related products. The proposal also includes stricter carbon accounting rules by adding emissions from pre-consumer scrap and examining indirect emissions from electricity use. This expansion is expected to impact Indian engineering exports, including auto components, machinery, and aluminium-based goods, and may increase compliance costs for exporters.

Pope Leo XIV Visits Cameroon

Pope Leo XIV visited Bamenda in western Cameroon, the epicentre of a separatist conflict, and presided over a peace meeting involving a Mankon traditional chief, a Presbyterian moderator, an Imam, and a Catholic nun, highlighting an interfaith peace movement aimed at ending the conflict and supporting victims. The meeting was held at the St. Joseph Cathedral, built on land donated by the Mankon community. The conflict in Cameroon is linked to its colonial history, when the country was divided between France and Britain. During the visit, separatist fighters announced a three-day pause in fighting to allow safe passage for the Pope.

India–Austria Talks Emphasise Non-Military Conflict Resolution

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker held India–Austria bilateral talks and stated that ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia cannot be resolved through military means. The two countries agreed to enhance cooperation in military affairs, counter-terrorism, and initiated dialogue on cybersecurity. The visit by Christian Stocker marks the first visit by an Austrian Chancellor to Asia in two years. Both leaders also agreed to strengthen ties under the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and Strategic Partnership announced in January, reaffirming commitment to peaceful resolution through negotiation.

Kerala Botanist Wins WWF National Award for AI App

N. Alim Yusuf, a researcher at the Malabar Botanical Garden and Institute for Plant Sciences (MBGIPS), Olavanna, Kozhikode, received the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) National Award for developing an AI-powered mobile application to identify invasive plant species in Kerala. His application, Neophyte ID, can identify nearly 100 invasive plant species recorded in the state and was launched at the Kerala Science Congress held in Kochi in February. The award was presented at the National ECHO Youth Innovation Summit 2026, held as part of the International Youth Biodiversity Conference in Telangana. As part of the recognition, he will receive a ₹1.5 lakh seed grant from WWF. The application is powered by the YOLOv11 machine learning model, supports Malayalam and English, and includes geospatial tracking to map the spread of invasive species.

Former IOA President N. Ramachandran Passes Away

N. Ramachandran, former President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), passed away in Chennai at the age of 77. He served as IOA President from 2014 to 2017 and had earlier held the position of Treasurer. He was also the Secretary General of the Squash Rackets Federation of India (SRFI) and later served as President of the World Squash Federation (WSF) from 2008 to 2016 for two terms. He played a key role in establishing the Indian Squash Academy in Chennai in 2000, which produced players such as Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal, and Saurav Ghoshal. He also served as CEO of the Indian Triathlon Federation and was associated as a patron with the Asian Squash Federation and SRFI. In 2011, he received the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar from the Government of India, and in August 2016, he was awarded the Olympic Order-Silver by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Yana Caves Declared Geo-Heritage Site

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has declared the Yana Caves near Gokarna in Uttara Kannada district as a geo-heritage site of national importance. This recognition was made during the 176th Foundation Day of GSI and announced through a letter dated April 13, 2026. The rock formations at Yana are estimated to be around 2,700 million years old and are composed of Pre-Cambrian dolomitic limestone. The region features 61 distinct karst formations, with Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara being the प्रमुख peaks.

Andhra Pradesh Plans Use of Robots and Drones for Firefighting

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response and Fire Services Department has planned to introduce robots and drones for firefighting in hazardous conditions to improve the safety of firefighters and control fires. The drones will have a payload capacity of 20 kg, and the department plans to deploy one robot and four drones. These technologies will be used in locations where firefighters cannot enter, such as high-rise buildings and areas involving toxic leaks. The initiative was stated by Fire Services in-charge Director General P. Venkata Ramana.

Samrat Choudhary Sworn in as 24th Chief Minister of Bihar

Samrat Choudhary, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was sworn in as the 24th Chief Minister of Bihar on April 15 in Patna, becoming the first BJP Chief Minister of the state . The oath of office was administered by Governor Syed Arshad Hussain at the Raj Bhavan, Patna. Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav of the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] were sworn in as Deputy Chief Ministers . The leadership change followed the resignation of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who later became a Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). In the Bihar Assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retained power with 202 seats, with BJP emerging as the single largest party (89 seats), ahead of JD(U) (85 seats)

The post gained attention globally. Earlier, the Kerala State Government had announced that the Argentina national football team would play a friendly international match in Kochi in 2025. To facilitate this, Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman visited Spain and held discussions with officials of the Argentine Football Association (AFA). However, in April 2026, the agreement faced issues as the AFA did not fulfil the commitment despite receiving an advance payment of ₹250 crore, leading to a dispute between the Kerala Government and the AFA.
