Ice Memory Vault Launched in Antarctica

Scientists inaugurated the first global repository of mountain ice cores in Antarctica to preserve records of the Earth’s past atmosphere as glaciers melt due to global warming. The frozen vault was established by the Ice Memory Foundation, a consortium of European research institutes, at the Concordia Station on the Antarctic Plateau. The facility stores ice cores, which contain information on past atmospheric conditions, including gases, aerosols, pollutants, and dust. The first ice core samples were collected from Mont Blanc in France and Grand Combin in Switzerland and transported from Trieste, Italy, to Antarctica after a 50-day refrigerated journey.
