World Environment Day 2025 – June 5
® World Environment Day (WED) is observed on June 5 to promote environmental awareness and action. ® Established in 1972 during the UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm. ® The first WED was celebrated in 1973 with the theme “Only One Earth”. ® The 2025 theme is “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution”.
Sagarmatha Sambaad 2024 – Global Dialogue on Mountains and Climate
® The inaugural Sagarmatha Sambaad was held in Kathmandu, Nepal, as a high-level global dialogue focused on “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity.” ® The dialogue highlighted the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems in the face of global climate change. ® India presented a five-point global action plan to safeguard fragile mountain regions: 1. Enhanced Scientific Cooperation 2. Building Climate Resilience 3. Empowering Mountain Communities 4. Providing Green Finance 5. Recognising Mountain Perspectives ® The event emphasized multilateral cooperation to ensure sustainable mountain development and address the unique challenges faced by mountain regions worldwide.
Regional Integrated Command and Control Centres (RICCCs) – Tamil Nadu
® The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to establish Regional Integrated Command and Control Centres (RICCCs) at Regional Deputy Commissioner (RDC) offices to decentralize urban governance. ® The RICCCs will replicate the core functionalities of the central Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Ripon Buildings, enabling real-time surveillance, incident monitoring, and data-driven decision-making. ® These centres will integrate data from environmental and civic sensors (e.g., water levels, air quality, rainfall) to issue alerts during localized emergencies. ® The system will be connected to the Public Grievance Redressal (PGR) platform, facilitating swift response to citizen complaints and improving urban service delivery.
Rajasthan’s Sangri Receives Geographical Indication (GI) Tag
® Sangri, the slender bean integral to Rajasthani cuisine, has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. ® The GI recognition protects the unique identity of Sangri, linking it to its distinct regional origin and traditional cultivation practices. ® This move is expected to boost the local economy and promote the cultural heritage of Rajasthan’s culinary traditions
