Surge in Migratory Bird Arrivals at Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary Delights Nature Enthusiasts

The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary near Thirumanur in Ariyalur district is witnessing a notable increase in the arrival of migratory birds, drawing joy and excitement among bird watchers and environmentalists. Located about 18 km from Ariyalur town, the 454-hectare wetland sanctuary attracts thousands of migratory birds each year from Central Asia, Tibet, Ladakh, Northern Russia, and Siberia, mainly between October and March.

This year, the sanctuary has recorded a sharp rise in the number of visiting species. During the day, the birds can be seen in nearby harvested paddy fields feeding on leftover grains, while in the evening, they return to the sanctuary, turning it into a vibrant haven of wings and colors. Over 100 species of waterfowl and 37 species of land birds have been documented during the current migratory season.

Among the water and wetland birds currently seen are pelicans, white ibis, glossy ibis, grey herons, moorhens, terns, spoonbills, painted storks, darters (snakebirds), gulls, little egrets, grebes, cormorants, and coots, while resident land birds such as lapwings, eagles, sparrows, drongos, orioles, woodpeckers, mynas, pigeons, crows, and peacocks are also frequently spotted.

The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, located in Ariyalur district, Tamil Nadu, was officially designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on 24 May 2023.

What is a Ramsar Site?

A Ramsar Site is a wetland designated as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran. The convention aims to conserve wetlands, ensure their wise and sustainable use, and protect biodiversity, especially habitats for migratory waterbirds.

Wetlands recognized as Ramsar Sites receive global attention and protection, ensuring scientific monitoring, improved management, and conservation funding. These sites play a vital role in flood control, groundwater recharge, water purification, and supporting livelihoods for local communities.
